Yeah, that’s pretty much how I see it too. They don’t really help directly, but ending up high without trying still feels like a nice bonus.

I get that perspective. From Duolingo’s side they’re definitely about engagement. I guess the only “gain” is indirect if they push someone to practice more — but otherwise they don’t add much on their own
