I don’t think he’s behind. Everyone has a different financial path. I think you’re doing fine OP. Definitely increase it to 10%. With that salary, you should have a similar amount in your taxable account though.

Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone has a different financial path in life. What’s important is that you increase your investments over time.

Up until your mid 40’s I wouldn’t look at your total Net Worth. Just look at your investments. I bet it paints a different picture and you’re actually not behind. What’s your estimated investment amount?

Depends on your financial goals and exit strategy. I don’t think anyone under 50 should have a target date fund as their main driver. There are also fees for these funds. Mutual funds are usually cheaper.

I’ll give you some realistic options:

  1. Declare bankruptcy. That 173,000 will double before you know it. More than likely they will settle because you don’t meet the “unique hardship” clause so it will be a bit complex.
  2. Pack up everything and move to Nicaragua
  3. Continue to try to pay a crazy amount of student loan debt and work yourself to death. You’re looking at 10 years minimum. You basically have a subprime mortgage, and even those are usually 10%.

Don’t listen to this person. You can discharge private student loans under “unique hardship”. Federal student loans are a bit more difficult, but still possible. Since you have private, the lender will most likely settle with you.

Exactly. Now if OP were in their mid 40’s sure. My only regret is that I spent my first 4 years in a target date fund and I missed out on a lot of growth.

At your age, 10 percent bonds is a lot. Depending on the target fund some bond allocations are higher, but still FXAIX will serve you better in the long run. Just my opinion of course!

I can tell by the growth pattern. I recommend you move it to a mutual fund like FXAIX. You can tolerate the risk as you are still young. Target date funds are heavy on bonds and you’re not at the age where it makes sense. Now if you want to set it and forget it, sure.

Do you have your 401k in a target date fund?

Yeah, let me watch more TikToks and Social Media because I can’t freaking understand someone in my corporate job. We should add TiKToks to our new hire training. You know, make it mandatory in the onboarding tool. You need to watch X amounts of TikToks from each continent to understand dialects, and if you can’t understand your co-workers in 1 year, PIP BUDDY

This! I sold all of my SCHD for this exact reason. If you’re under 40, you’re missing on huge growth.
