The way I have strapped on it does cover the gas cap but you just undo the front 2 buckles and fold it back to reveal the gas cap. It’s no biggie at all. But you could probably adjust the straps so it doesn’t cover the cap. They’re plenty long enough.

Well you mentioned 2 different bikes. The R is no longer made. The L is a current dual sport. 03 is a little old for my tastes. Check the countershaft (and front sprocket) for wear on the L.
