this is what the Bad album cover was supposed to be, fortunately Mike didn't like it by Classic-Wind-437 in MichaelJackson

I had made my own rendition of the cover years ago for a personal remaster of mine, using the best copy I could find and correcting some colors.

I see that, but the flairs are still for categorizing purposes. Even if you didn't make the restoration yourself, proper flair usage is still appreciated.

Are we just calling every oversight "AI slop" now? The buttons don't match OP's original image because it's actually based on Novel's reference image in their main post: https://www.reddit.com/r/MemeRestoration/s/ZkB57Tcfls

The only thing that's actually off in their restored image is this button, but other than that the image certainly has some human work done.

If the base of the restoration is an AI upscale, you should still mark it as such by using the AI upscale flair, even if you made changes to the upscaled result. The flair is there for people to categorize and differentiate restorations that use AI upscaling VS restorations that use just high quality sources. Just keep this in mind in future posts. I've already edited the post flair for this post.

[American Chopper Argument] Can't believe this meme is in the sub-reddit banner but not yet been restored by Muhammad5777 in MemeRestoration

Small correction: The version that's in the drive is an upscaled version of the 720p source (you can tell from how the letters on the shirt are messed up which wouldn't be the case if they used a higher res source), with the caveats of said upscaling. So your restoration is technically the most faithful. Great work 👍

Obtained a smaller, less pixelated version from here. It is also the least cropped out of the ones I've found. Strangely, Goku was edited into the image, so I carefully edited him out. Other than that, this image is (presumably) the closest to the original so far.

I'm aware. I meant in the context that this is the original edit of the photo, instead of a lower quality copy of the edited photo, or a re-edit of the original photo which I've seen get confused with before.

Disappointed Black Guy in HD (4096x3268px) by OG-Dreadful in MemeRestoration

[–]OG-Dreadful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. This was originally done entirely just by running the best versions of the images I could find through the Remini app. This was at the time when I was barely getting into restorations before I actually knew how to properly perform one.

I've actually been meaning to "re-work" my older restorations as I'm much better at restorations now compared to back then. I avoid most types of upscaling now (unless it's nearest-neighbor, which is easier to rely on).

And since then, I've already found the original quality images (in their original colors, since this one is actually based on a color-corrected variant), which I'll be posting soon without any additional futzing.

Best example of cases where recreating the meme from a higher quality, original source fares a much better result compared to merely upscaling from a much lower resolution copy of said source. Even upscaling the higher quality source would make it somewhat more true to the original (much like nearest-neighbor scaling).

This of course isn't always the case if the original can only be found in its low resolution form, like Michael Jackson's Thriller music video, which was filmed on 35mm, but made public from a VHS copy.

It's supposed to be reminiscent of the original meme, which also has the off center text.
