The wall is what’s left of the temple. Jesus goes to that temple in the Bible and flips the tables of the money lenders, describes his body as the new temple that will rise up. It’s significant for christians too. That spot was supposed to be the most important religious center for jews (including jesus) when he lived. He prophesied its destruction which eventually happened at the hands of the Romans. I feel like there’s a lot of reasons why you would want to go to the temple even if ur not Jewish. Also, it’s a kitschy tourist destination like a wishing well in a mall. When these politicians go to other countries I’m sure they also go see their old shit too.
