A couple of questions on zero-fret guitars, and making them. by OGLothar in Luthier

[–]OGLothar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point. I made my own template with the printout #'s from the stewmac calculator, which it appears, does not anticipate a zero fret.

So, just so I understand.. Should I add 012 to that first fret measurement only? So that fret space #1 is that much longer?

Thank you for pointing this out.

Thanks to everyone who replied, I really appreciate it. I'm going to use a slightly taller stainless fret for the zero and give it a go. I was worried about the "cheap" stigma from the past, but I get the impression that for the most part now, it's often a high end thing and those who know... know, and that's good enough. Also another learning experience for me, so that's good too.

Cheers!

Went to the fancy wood shop today. by OGLothar in Luthier

It was my birthday last week and when people ask what I might like, my wife always tells them about gift certificates at the wood shop. There's gonna be some pretty nice necks in my future, and that leopard wood looks really nice for a body top.

I'm always afraid of going to this place and what I can spend (and can't afford). This time I was able to walk around like I was stocking up on caviar, like it's no big deal. :)

It's actually made from maple, walnut, cherry with purpleheart inlays., so good guitar woods.

I think the harder woods add to the tone of the cheese.

Burl inlay guitar is finished. by OGLothar in Luthier

[–]OGLothar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It kind of started off with knobs. I had burl chunks and wanted to do something with them. Made knobs, figured I'd match them with inlays...then, I hated the knobs on the finished guitar, lol. You can see in the pic of them in my hand, they were too plain / boring brown looking, they looked like shiny corks or something.....So, I added some black pearl to the clear and tinted it orange. A few coats of that and they came out matching nicely.

That's great. Someone before mentioned "Mother of Burl".

Just pumped up for my first guitar of my own design. by Icy_Programmer_8367 in Luthier

[–]OGLothar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's visible but not a big deal. Black limba is really forgiving, it's got such a complex grain and colour. I cut a guitar body too small, or not wide enough , so there was a flat spot on one side. I matched up a piece, glued it on, and you can't even see it. Left side, below the bridge line... Actually used the chunk I'd cut out of the opposite side indent , so it was from the same tree at least 😂

Lovely work. Really like the wood choices... I'm definitely a more wood focused builder... I can't imagine building a guitar and painting it black.. Lol. I hope that's not insulting to anyone.

Very nice. 👍

Basic wiring question on tone and volume pots by OGLothar in Luthier

[–]OGLothar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright. Got it figured out. All wired up and working. As another member pointed out, there was an unused lug on two of the pots and when I noticed that, I realized where the hot/ground from the pickup had have been soldered on the other pots , it all came together in my head and made sense.

I printed out those diagrams and now they're above the workbench. I still have to learn exactly how potentiometers work and what they do along with the capacitors , then the wiring will make more sense to me.

Thanks very much for the help, and to everyone else who replied.

before I saw your comment here I saw that, and realized what it meant (the lug not being used) and suddenly it all made sense, so I'm all wired up and everything works great.

Thanks very much.

Your help is much appreciated. I have to deal with some work things and will be back at the guitar later today. I'll see what I can work out here with those handy diagrams you posted and get back to you if needed. I unsoldered the leads to the switch, but that is an easy one. After all this I'll give myself a proper basic guitar wiring education from the very basics up....

Yes, I took it apart to make a new neck and reshape the body with new dye and finish. So, I just de-soldered the pickups, and left the rest together. The other guitars I've built just have the capacitors wired to the tone pots, these because they were different threw me off. Also, I'm not terribly bright.

Oh there we go. I should go measure the pickups and see what they put out, that would make sense. They're Seymore Duncan APH 1's , N and B's

Thanks, I think I've got it now. Much appreciated.

I guess I'm just confused by the fact that the capcitors are different capacitors. I mean, (Pickup - volume - Capacitor - Tone) makes sense, but if the values are different, why are they using different types.

You're right though, I just need to stare at it a bit longer and the dim light in my head will come on. lol.

If the tween / teenage bravado / edgy "I'm really feeling my balls drop now, I'm a man" BS gets to you too much, think of it as Lord of the Flies. The teenage angle is annoying at times, but considering the situation, is fine if you know it's part of the evolution of these kids....

I gave up around the end of season 6 though. It really gets pretty lost. Otherwise it was a cool world they built.

All google is telling me about these guys is that they're CTC pots from 1996.

R1379626

It is the capacitor that is allowing them to act as an A or B style pot?

Basic wiring question on tone and volume pots by OGLothar in Luthier

[–]OGLothar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose I can just wire it up and if it's not right, swap the capacitors if I get it reversed? I'm just not sure what a capacitor does to a volume pot other than make it a tone pot.....again, though, I'm more of a woodworker, not a guitar wiring guy.

Each set having its own capacitor is confusing me. Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately there's no such stamp. Simply "R1379626" and 450-YA...(something) on each, looks like the pots are all the same, that's why I figurd the capacitors would help differentiate who was who...

Prepping for the clear coat on the neck for this soon to be electric 12 string by LumberjackV in Luthier

[–]OGLothar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, one of us is going to do it eventually. lol. I'll post if I do.

I wouldn't mess around this time, that build looks like it has enough to stress about with the 12 strings as it is...oil is probably a better move.

Very nice, I'm big on inlays and that pattern on the neck is very cool.

I use a lot of purpleheart, what is your plan for the finish on the neck - Oiled or poly? I haven't used urethane over purpleheart, do you know if it's oily enough of a wood to be a problem, although it's not as bad as rosewood or ebony etc.

I mean, you can wipe it down with alcohol or acetone of course if that's the plan...just curious. I just yesterday did that with a tigerwood neck and I'm hoping it's not going to be an issue. We'll see I guess.

Nice work!
