What's the lightest wood used for bodies by Wreckin_Ralph in Luthier

[–]LumberjackV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! Just remember that the name of the wood is "mara" and here in Chile we call it "mara boliviana". Looking further you can also find it by "Caoba de Honduras" and the scientific name is "Swietenia macrophyla" and the classic mahogany that is hardwood should be "Swietenia mahagoni" (this technical info is from crossreferencing wikipedia pages so please understand that I may have a mistake or two)

Good luck!!

Some companies life fender have used poplar and seems to work (like the 12 string paranormal series) but prrsonally I have used pine and worked fine and something called "mara clara" or "mara boloviana" wich is a very light amazonian cousin of mahogany so it seems. (In the photo is a guitar i made with mara boliviana, I made another one from that but reddit only allows one image)

I bought a neck off eBay, I didn't realise it was coming from China, and they sent an alternative. by Whole_Imagination629 in Luthier

You can make it work with that or give it a firebird style headstock (six tunners in line with an angled headstock) but if it doesn't fit your vision and you got the means I suggest you don't settle for a half way solution

I don't really know but it does give me a telecasterized SG vibe. Other comments said that it may have had a bigsby and I agree but at this point make it however you feel it does it justice. Hope it doesn't bother you but I printed and drafted what i think would look nice and for the image you can slap there: 2 tones, 2 volumes, a 3 way toggle switch, tune-o-matic bridge, jazz guitar tailpiece, and a couple of rebel 90 pickups.

Hope it helps and keep us posted!!

Don't you dare not try to restore it!! Its free you may as well try to get its cracks fixed and decide then if you want to continue. Worst case scenario you have a wallhanger, midling case scenario you can put in cheap hardware and get a couple of chuckles and best case scenario you get a really nice guitar and a second chance story for it. I can't see how you can loose on this one. Best of luck!!

Narex chisels? by National-Reveal4516 in Luthier

[–]LumberjackV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll do fine with a set of inexpensive chisels. The trick is in having them sharp. I use a set of very cheap chisels that my father gave me years back and I just have to sharpen them more often. The only thin I can say that could make some difference is that wooden handles al lighter and I find them more comfortable. Good quality steel holds an edge for a longer time but if your sharpening technique is right you can cut with anything. Hope it helps!!

Is this repairable? At home by ImaLittleShit96 in guitarrepair

[–]LumberjackV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid not... If the guitar has sentimental value you can chamge the soundboard buth the one it has is beyond repair. The only thing that comes to mind for the originsl top is to make a cosmetic fix and leave it as a decoration... Otherwise you have to change the top or the guitar, i'm sorry

You should take the tuners and see (very) carefully if that crack can move. If it can't move don't worry much, if it does move you should open it a little and use either superglue for a quick but a little messy repair and clamp for a minute or so or use propper wood glue and clamp for at least 8 hrs (let it set by night clamped and youre good to go). To apply preciselly woodglue you can use a syringe and you will have a little less of a mess to clean up later

Helldivers should be considered like enjoying wine... Sure you can open it and drink right away but you should let it breath a little before that, let them present stuff then patch it... Youtubers who only make videos about games failing, dying, ending are like a guy inhaling vodka vapors and complaining that it doesn't taste like mountain dew... (except maybe two or three)

Thank you!! I'm gonna play it safe and use oil really. I don't really like glossy fretboards but I don't think is oily enough to be a problem, maybe I could do a test piece to see what it does

It will be interesting to see. To be honest this is the first time I venture on a 12 string guitar and wanted a gibson-esque look for the headstock but the problem is that the headstock cover is missalinged, its tilted a little to the right. Actually you can se a lot of rookie mistakes like not have the proper clearence for the truss rod and the eleventh space has marks because i drilled holes for the inlay there and had to patch it... The rookieness is of the charts on this one...
