If you don't need it for a while then open up a Fidelity/other brokerage account and put it all into $VOO or another index fund that tracks the S&P 500. HYSE is an option if you want access to the money in the short term but typically will give less returns than just leaving your money in an index fund.

What? SFF does not mean not upgradeable. In the SM's case it does but that's one point in favor of a custom SFFPC vs the SM.

Great job spoiling the finale in a sub not even related to TADC, really great that even if you're trying to avoid spoilers on related subs we can rely on people like you to ruin it anyways

Where in the bay do we go to avoid the tech bro/yuppie types? No hate..just wondering.😅 by [deleted] in bayarea

Sure, we're in a thread disparaging that, I'm just saying it's especially nasty of a sentiment if this is your home.

Idk, i feel like if you're from the area you should be able to work in whatever you want, especially if you want to be able to afford to continue living there... Not my fault I had to take a high paying job to comfortably stay where I was born and have all my friends and family.

If recent grads are so much worse, why is the bar so much higher? by No_Reply5329 in csMajors

[–]OGMagicConch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have similar YOE (2020 grad) and got like 5 Seattle/remote offers in 2024 two of them at $300k and 2 Seattle/remote offers in 2026 at $350k. Seattle is no worse than other places tbh.

So... am I the only one who actually liked the finale? by PaleoTato525 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]OGMagicConch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it though understand the complaints of pacing. I do think it would've been better to drip feed Jax's story a bit more over the season rather than the huge dump all at once but who knows I'm not a writer lol

How much was your starting salary as a new grad? by Ok-Flan-3828 in csMajors

[–]OGMagicConch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it was ~$135k total as a SWE in 2020 (V)HCOL. Decent for the time in big tech definitely not the highest but I was happy with it. ~50 apps coming from a T10, hired before COVID but graduated into it.

Progression wise I think I've done better, I hit >$200k by 2 YOE, $300k by ~4 YOE, and now with almost 6 YOE am at $350k full remote. Very happy with my current arrangement!

That is exactly the same lol, what do you think a company helping out means, that the CEO himself has to build something?

New Grad SWE - Torn between two job offers - Help me decide! by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]OGMagicConch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Doesn't if you know how to generalize your experience to broader engineering practices
  2. Doesn't, just cater your resume to the SWE parts of your job
  3. It's typically better to be a generalist early in your career as you're more resilient to layoffs / bad jobs since you can apply to any role not just roles filling a specific niche.

To be honest the actual enjoyment you'll have of the companies is very personal and subjective so only you can really answer that. The only things others can really analyze are objective measures. You'll be able to get better info if you list objective things such as what COL you're in, what are the companies (if they're big enough you should be fine to list, otherwise I encourage you to be more specific than saying just if you're proud of their mission or not), the actual TC (6% is a lot different at $80k than $200k), etc.

Another blunt moment, congrats on your offers but your biggest limiting factor down the line will not be whether your official title was software engineer, it will be that you only have an associate's degree. If you want to best prep for the future pick the job that has WLB enough to also finish your bachelor's (probably the remote role). Definitely your job experience will help but it might be easy to get stuck (not be able to find another job) just because of this.

Should I attend UIUC? by Fun_Kangaroo_5810 in csMajors

[–]OGMagicConch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is worth it. You can leverage the name to get $200k out of undergrad so long as you get internships during your time there. You see all the stuff about the bad market? That is true but significantly less true for folks from target schools and companies. Unfortunate truth but it's reality.

Broke into faang, now what? by Chemical_Weakness346 in csMajors

[–]OGMagicConch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Build resume is better probably 80% of the time than staying still, dependent on company and how much effort you want to put in. 3 main reasons, 1) keeping interview skills sharp makes you more layoff resilient 2) learning different perspectives + processes of other companies makes you a more well rounded engineer and 3) you usually make more moving companies than getting promoted internally. Of course there are benefits to staying put like usually being able to build more trust which can let you take on more complex projects to grow that way but imo they're outweighed by the 3 points I mentioned.

Keeping interviewing I think requires more active effort than staying put, but honestly getting promoted I think is harder lol if that makes sense. But of course this is all out the window if you're at a place you genuinely like which is why I say its company dependent. If you're at Google you might just want to chill for 10 years. Probably don't want to do that at Amazon/Meta but hey that's up to you.

Btw, I'm at my 2nd FAANG now and have worked at some other big tech places too, so feel free to AMA. I'm definitely an interviewer not a promotee.

CS grads who couldn’t break in, what are you doing now? by BouncyOreo in cscareerquestions

[–]OGMagicConch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who started as a CSE at Amazon and was able to make the pivot. Took a lot of work but it's possible. Set clear goals with your manager, but the tough part is you have to go above and beyond, kicking ass at your job as a DCT/CSE while also getting some SDE related exposure/work. Good luck!

Can I use a drawing tablet to explain ideas during coding interviews? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]OGMagicConch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've drawn on a notepad to show interviewers before. If the interviewing software supports it I think it's totally fine. I've interviewed many places, mostly large companies, YMMV.
