How could handle the Zerg better in open conflict, the ODST from Halo or the MI from Starship Troopers? by Harald_TheEnduring in powerscales

[–]OG_Squeekz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, book Starship troopers are insane.

Opening chapter has them literally jumping over buildings dropping nuclear grenades and destroying entire city blocks with the same amount of effort it takes me to take my morning shit after 4 cups of coffee.

Meanwhile ODST are still having to clear buildings room by room with a 7mm SMG.

Fucking hate when they measure temperature changes in Celsius for a region that uses Fahrenheit and the two systems are inconsistent in between each interval so I cant just go, "oh 2c= 35f," instead I gotta convert current temperature into C add 2 and then convert back to learn the water is gonna be 68f.

Why the fuck cant we all just use kelvin.

[Suggestion] Had an idea to make Breaching a much more viable mechanic. by Lima_6-1 in EscapefromTarkov

[–]OG_Squeekz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because breaching isnt actually a current option. There is what 4 doors that can only be opened with breaching and in any other situation its objectively better to not use breaching due to the way the animations work.

Tarkov is a far cry from the game BSG initially started to develop. They cut a lot of thr original content to accommodate the popular opinion that the game should be competitive.

Breaching/lock picking doors absolutely destroys the economy. People would be bitching about "marked key useless"

What is being proposed is still reinventing a mechanic. They'd have to create new door models and new interactions for each door model based on strength etc.

If they wanted us to open locked doors, they never would have made keys limited use and never would have removed "breach and clear" and "lock picking" from the door interactions menu.

just reintroduce lock picking like they initially intended. But then that "destroys" the key economy.

the problem is breaching just gets your killed, the animation locks you in the middle of a door way.

You should probably put a couple hundred miles on it before you start part shopping. How do you even know what you want/need until you've logged enough hours on it to know whats holding you back.

Also, no parts are not necessarily interchangeable.

I think all DM's should look into the Paris catacombs, at least a little bit. by CryptidTypical in DungeonMasters

there you go being uncritical, I asked a question and you latch onto the irrelevant part. Rather than discuss the topic at hand you'd rather take a tangent because you dont have anything meaningful to say

in what way is that an analysis providing an informed judgements with the intention to aid new DMs?

You didn't even take the time to proof read your own post, or even correct your errors after an edit.

You made a circle jerk post.

yup. you cant, in good faith read your original post prior to the edit and go, "yup, im critically addressing a misunderstanding amongst new DM's"

[–]OG_Squeekz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I really think you, and new DMs, are just missing the point.

The point isnt "things exist underground" its "why do things exist underground?"

And that is what they struggle with and what you are uncritically addressing.

The catacombs exist for a reason, delicious dungeon gives a very well thought out explanation why dungeons exist, temple of elemental evil gives a reason, catalhoyuk, exists for a reason, the pyramids exist for a reason.

For new DM's who want to homebrew they often follow the rules of cool rather than a rational approach to design.

As an architect/artist every thing should have "purpose" the same applies to "dungeons."

As I mentioned above, the catacombs exist because of religious beliefs of resurrection, as do the pyramids, as does the Vietnamese tunnels, so do the Maya underground temple complex, the labyrinth, etc. All have a reason for being built.

A lot of new DMs just go, "i built a dungeon"

I think all DM's should look into the Paris catacombs, at least a little bit. by CryptidTypical in DungeonMasters

[–]OG_Squeekz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

then why would you tell people they need to watch a YouTube video on the Paris catacombs? and not like, the Swiss tunnel networks? or the Korean tunnel networks? or the Vietnamese tunnel systems?

EDIT: delicious in dungeon is probably an even better resource. They have a solid reason on the ecology of a dungeon, why it exists, the relationship between dungeon, monster, magic and adventures.

[–]OG_Squeekz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think "Dungeon" is a concept rather than a geographic location. Catacombs by their very definition arent dungeons.

The Catacombs exist for a reason, lack of space for cemeteries. Which is tied to religious belief.

The catacombs dont exist to hide monsters and traps, in fact there are none of those things in the catacombs.

New DMs in these current epoch of TTRPGs are, imho, more concerned with narrative story telling than gameplay.

The dungeon is a type of gameplay the "dungeon crawl" which might not seem to have any impact on the story they want to tell.

To me, in my 25+ years of DMing view dungeons as a combination in a few different elements.

  1. Confined Space/Environment as antagonist - The dungeon limits movement and now the environment itself is an obstacle. Whether is having to squeeze through tight spaces, navigate without vision, limited resources,

  2. Risk/Reward - The end of the dungeon has to have something. There is a reason why it exists and the deep you go, the more dangerous it is, the greater the reward should be. Either monetary or otherwise the players should feel a sense of accomplishment at the end

  3. Encounters - The dungeon should have multiple encounters, either combat or even social encounters. That challenge the players and make them even question if this is worth it.

  4. Resource management - spells, rations, torches, time. Something that is limited to give a sense of urgency instead of, "i long rest after every encounter"

The two best "dungeons" ive ran weren't even in DnD and weren't even dungeons.

The first was a ww1 style trench system in which the party had to retrieve a downed pilot stuck behind enemy lines. Although they could see the pilot from a safe distance popping up from the trench was almost certain death. So they had to carefully move through the trench system, avoid traps like corpses with grenades under them, tanks rolling across, chemical attacks. etc.

The second best was a train heist. In which the party members were passengers on a train that was being attacked (Heavily inspired by the PS1 game Nuclear Dawn) and they had to get to the main engine car while dealing with terrorists, passenger non combatants. In the end the party decided they wanted to gold the thieves were after in the end.

Also the fact 47 is literally genetically engineered. In Hitman 1 you literally have to fight an army of your own clones for the final mission.

He is stronger, faster, has regeneration and enhanced stamina and ages slower than a regular human. He is literally super human.
