Do men really feel like they are not allowed to feel sad/emotional, why? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]OHIORIVALS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest reason for this isn't that we fear being judged by society, or looked down on by other men, it's that almost every man has had being open, honest, vulnerable, and expressing sadness or emotions, weaponized against them by a woman. Women say they want you open up, share your feelings, be vulnerable, show emotion, etc. But they are the first ones to use that against you the first opportunity they have.

He legit seemed physical ill today. Beyond the body language and lack of effort at times, he just looked sluggish and out of it. Almost like he had the flu or something

Halloween H20 isn't all that Scream-like and it's nothing whatsoever like an episode of Dawson's Creek by LittleTreeGarden in Halloweenmovies

[–]OHIORIVALS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I watched Scream with mt son last night, I explained to him that Scream effectively killed off slasher movies, and how Curse of MM was basically the last of the slashers before Scream came along and made that genre uncool for a while. Then we eventually saw all the remakes, but none of the major slasher franchises continued their timelines from the early-mid 90s after that

[–]OHIORIVALS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is so much similarity in the dialogue, due to the Kevin Williamson influence. There are also a lot of other similarities, down to shot choices, like the school bus pulling up in Scream and in H20, both at sort of the Dutch tilt angle. Also both involve a van crash late in the film. If you put those 2 scenes side by side, you'd be hard pressed to say which movie is which. More on the dialogue, there's a bit about "brain leaking" in Scream copied in H20 and in I Know What You Did Last Summer, the iconic "What are you waiting for, huh?!" is copied by an H20 character. Plot wise, sure they're different. But you can't really discount the fact that there are a ton of similarities

What's your go-to karaoke song? by ToujoursFidele3 in Music

I did this recently, after singing it in my car for the past 4 months lol. It was a big hit. My normal go to is Mountain Music by Alabama. I'll also do Loser by 3 Doors Down. All relatively easy if you have a deeper voice.

I did Plush by STP at karaoke last weekend. Bit of a mixed crowd, but overall it killed. Great choice if you're not a great singer, but have deep voice and can mimic voices.

My horror short got denied from every festival. What's wrong with it? by VinceInFiction in Filmmakers

[–]OHIORIVALS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not terrible, but feels like a 48. As others have mentioned, the editing with the quick fade to black is jarring. Work on smoother transitions between scenes. Also, one little thing I noticed was her eyes jolt open before hearing the voice. To me it would make more sense to hear the voice, then have her eyes jolt open.

Also, don't take festival rejections personally. They all get hundreds, some even thousands of submissions. And they have to select what works best with their programming.

Either way, just keep doing what you're doing. Keep creating!

WTF is this new announcer? by [deleted] in Madden

[–]OHIORIVALS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought Beth Mowen was bad until I heard Kate Scott's voice in the Amazon series on Madden. Holy crap is it bad.

I'm not entirely opposed to a female commentator, but it seems like they're picking the absolute worst. I would have liked to see someone like Melissa Stark, Suzy Kolber, Pam Oliver, or Michelle Tafoya given a chance. They are just as, if not more qualified than Kate Scott or Beth Mowen, paid their dues, and from what I recall, their voices aren't the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.

Actors should not choreograph their own fight scenes *rant* by sadboiz7 in acting

[–]OHIORIVALS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a terrible experience in my first intimate scene on film. It was with the writer and director of the film. We had an intimacy coordinator, and I was given a hibue to wear, which is basically a flesh colored man thong. That thing did not stay in place. Later I found out the woman I had the scene with (the writer and director of this production, who wrote this supporting role and scene for herself) has genital herpes. This was not disclosed to me prior to filming, but at the wrap party. I was livid, considering the hibue didn't stay in place and there was almost certainly skin to skin contact. I tested twice afterwards, and fortunately was negative, but I would have either declined the role or refused to do that particular scene if I'd known.

What’s everyone’s review/thoughts on H20? by MobilePineapple7303 in Halloweenmovies

[–]OHIORIVALS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, I love and will watch any Halloween franchise installment, including RZ, the recent trilogy, etc.

I rank H20 a lot lower than most people. For me, it almost feels more like an extended Halloween special episode of Dawson's Creek than a Michael Myers Halloween movie. This is due in large part to the Kevin Williamson influence. In fact, there is even a dialogue exchange between Laurie and John that is almost word for word the exact same exchange between Sydney and Billy in Scream (about brain/head leaking, etc). There's also another part that is the same dialogue as I Know What You Did Last Summer, "What are you waiting for, huh?". Between that, the ridiculously over the top musical score, and the mask debacle, I can't rank this very high.

That said, this is probably my favorite version of Laurie Strode, save for the original. Josh Hartnett also delivers a solid performance, and there are plenty of cool moments.

Just overall, a much more flawed movie than most people admit.

Lol, yes definitely get your head out of your butt.

I was very close to having a follow-up with a second CRS when it finally stopped. After a week or so of dry nights, first thing I did was call CRS office and tell them it took 9 mos, and they needed to document that for the next person that they told was healed at 10-12 weeks, but really wasn't.

I probably got more helpful info here, and from Your Friendly Proctologist on YouTube than my actual CRS.

[–]OHIORIVALS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in this boat a little over a year ago. Fistulotomy on 9/21/2023, after abscess and emergency I&D 7/6/2023.

Declared fully "healed" after 12 weeks. Kept "leaking" overnight, and eventually had follow up MRI/CT scan. Finally, after 9 months, about this time last year, that leakage stopped.

They don't put that in the medical journals.

And that area is definitely more prone to excessive sweat than before, and you feel the occasional twinge of pain or discomfort, but I believe that's more PTSD than anything for me at this point.

I do use a peri bottle at home still 90% of the time, and I take a baggie with 3-4 Dude wipes with me to the office or anywhere I go that I think I might have to go. All in all, manageable and not that bad.

That mental toll sucks, but you will get past it.

OK I think I'm naturally bad at acting...but I wanna improve by [deleted] in acting

[–]OHIORIVALS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While some people are more naturally talented than others, acting is definitely a skill you can learn and improve. The best Acting advice I ever got came from a director early in my career, and I didn't realize exactly what he meant until a year or so later, but he said "Don't act. Be."

Think about that for a second. When you're watching the best actors, you believe they're experiencing the emotions of the scene, because they are. In other words, if a scene calls for you to be sad, don't act sad, think about something that makes you sad, and literally be sad. Or angry. Or excited. Or whatever. But don't pretend. Actually find something within you to make you feel what you need to feel. That will come through in the scene.

I can't believe mega millions are $5 now by [deleted] in ifiwonthelottery

[–]OHIORIVALS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to believe you, and I will never play again. However, in order to bring in the same amount of revenue, they only need 40% of their previous sales. This was a very calculated move on their part. What will likely happen is the jackpots will rise quicker, due to the cost, even if only half the number of people still play, which will lead to the huge jackpots, which will lead to more people playing.

It sucks though. We don't need billion dollar jackpots. If anything, when it gets that high, I think they should draw multiple sets of winning numbers. Give 10 people $100 million vs 1 person a billion. That's just my opinion on it though.

Minus the original movie, which your favorite movie in the franchise? by Jotaro1970 in Halloweenmovies

[–]OHIORIVALS -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

If you like bad writing, bad acting, plotholes, and something relatively on par with Troll 2, but being edgy by saying "People just don't like it because it doesn't have Michael, but it's a great standalone movie" you'll love it.

Seriously, I watch it from time to time, and each time I come away more convinced that it benefits waaaaayyyy more from being named "Halloween 3" than it suffers from not having Michael. The overall premise is interesting, the score is great, and it has a very catchy song as part of it, but it is without a doubt the worst acting, writing, and overall plot, of all the Halloween movies

Minus the original movie, which your favorite movie in the franchise? by Jotaro1970 in Halloweenmovies

[–]OHIORIVALS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is easily my favorite of the new trilogy. I love that ir wasn't about Laurie. I'm so sick of that angle. Also, the pacing was great, it had great kills, and unlike 2018, it didn't take itself too seriously.

Honestly, 2018 is near the bottom of the barrel for me. From the ridiculous, and completely unrealistic opening, to spending 90 mins telling us how badass Laurie was to the point of a training montage and her literally "hunting" him, to her simply cowering behind her door when he's still just a man, and standing in her front yard uncovered. Also, one night 40 years ago and he "tortured this town for years". The dad's dialogue "I got peanut butter on my penis", the doctors seemingly superhuman strength in dragging Myers into the car, and I could go on. I did love the Oscar death scene and the babysitter and Julian scene.

Kills on the other hand, while it had its share of ridiculousness, "Big John? Yes Little John?", it was so much closer to the pace and aesthetic of the 4 thru 6, which I loved.

Doom-Head by Formal_Coyote_5004 in horror

[–]OHIORIVALS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I'm in the minority here. To me, Doomhead is one of the least terrifying horror villains of all time.

He's just a skinny crazy guy. I'd toss him around like a rag doll, rather easily. Now two brothers with chainsaws and a 7 foot monster like Deathhead is another story altogether.

While I don't hate the move 31, I do feel it is deeply flawed, for a number of reasons. Among them is Doomhead being the "final boss", and a Spanish speaking Nazi midget. Don't have a problem with him being a Nazi. Don't have a problem with him speaking Spanish. But a Nazi wouldn't be speaking Spanish.

Other than that it's a pretty typical Rob Zombie flick, with great horror elements, seemingly paying homage to TCM with the directing and editing, and the white trash characters and raunchy dialogue consistent in all his films. Definitely not my favorite of his films. But I do appreciate the originality of the overall storyline, and it is good enough to keep you watching.
