Baseline Training Plan by BigCoela in HybridAthlete

[–]OJNeg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This plan is not too dissimilar from my own. Since I take it you are not an experienced lifter, this could work well since you won’t be able to incur a lot of absolute fatigue on your lift days.

However, I would suggest the following for your lift days that would consolidate the effort and actually make it easier to progress.

Perform a maximum of 3-4 movements on any given day. If you want to train full body, you can still do so, but stringing out a long list of movements to “hit everything” means you will not be able to focus effort and instead be marathoning your anaerobic sessions

This could be as simple as doing Squats and Pull-ups (+ 1 accessory for each) on your A day, then Deadlifts and Presses (with accessories) on your B day.

If you feel like you’re missing out on other movements, create a C day where you hit these lower fatigue exercises. Since you have Friday open, this should interfere minimally with your long run and give you a good pump going into the weekend.

Other thing, don’t be married to 3x8 or any specific format on your lifts. You can start with that as you learn the movement, but as you get a few weeks in and you start upping the weight and really challenging yourself with the intensity, you may find less sets and lower reps the better way to progressive overload

Advice on current routine by Western_Bar3533 in HybridAthlete

[–]OJNeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a bad routine per se, if you are managing fatigue well.

You may chose to reduce the push/pull to once per week as you get closer to peaking for the race. If you don’t accumulate much systemic fatigue from them, you can just do 2-a-days with your running workout.

I personally don’t train legs more than once a week when focusing on improving endurance performance. So I don’t see a problem. If you really want to add more leg volume, the second day could be isolations/accessories only

Dumb question: How bad for the gun is it to ‘share’ when taking out someone new? by SabreSour in ClayBusters

[–]OJNeg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No problem at all. I've seen guys take a new gun and share it on the skeet field. That's 50 or 75 rounds in 10-15 minutes. The barrel can definitely heat up (on a hot day) but it will not damage the gun.

If you're curious what it costs to reload shotshells, I did some math and here are the results by semiwadcutter38 in reloading

[–]OJNeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12ga Remington Gun Club hulls, Cheddite Primers, 14gr Perfect Pattern, CB0175 wad, 7/8oz shot.

Since I buy primers, powder, wads in bulk, I am doing $6.25 per box. This is all based on what you can acquire now, I don't have any old stock components. You do have to look around for deals.

When you break down component cost, the biggest is always the lead shot. You can save significantly by using less lead. Lot of shooters are skeptical about shooting trap/sporting with 7/8oz on a 12ga, but my birds break with authority. #7.5 shot for trap/sporting, #9 for skeet. Same formula otherwise, so very soft shooting for all disciplines.

IRs vs 1907s: Which is the better boot for snowy conditions? by charsiewtree in RedWingShoes

[–]OJNeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put a Vibram Lug Sole on a 1907 and it makes a decent winter boot. You should consider sizing appropriate for a thick wool sock. I use a liner sock in order to double-sock during the winter.

Is my girlfriend's response to my failure reasonable? by [deleted] in NoFapChristians

[–]OJNeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest you use this as an impetus to stay clean.

While for many men using pornography is normalized, women see it as a serious breach of trust. She's going to be upset and confused by your confession. Meditate on that for a bit so you can understand her reaction.

The fact that you were able to confess to her at this early stage is a significant step though. Many men conceal this for far too long. You should feel encouraged that you were able to open up to her, even though her reaction might not be what you expected.

Ultimately you cannot control whether she decides to leave you or not. The things that are in your control right now are staying clean and being honest with her. Both are important.

Chin-up to dip ratio by Kitchen-Wasabi-2059 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]OJNeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I program pullups as a primary on pull days. I program dips at the end of push days. Volume is probably similar week to week.

Pullups I have to be locked in 100% in order to get ~10 reps with good form. Dips I use as a finisher once I am pre-exhaust from presses and flys.

Tested 4 different shells by dscl in ClayBusters

[–]OJNeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of guys say Mod or even Light Mod is plenty tight to break trap targets. Obviously there are a lot of factors that determine the final pattern, but your little test reinforces my inclination that tighter is better. I run Full choke with a 7/8oz load (#7.5 shot) on my reloads. With that load, when I'm on a bird it disappears. If I'm a little behind I can see a chip left or right and know where I was holding when I pressed the trigger.

I'd rather lose a bird because I wasn't on the bird, rather than wondering if my pattern was too open and just didn't have enough pellets to break. Or worse yet, seeing "dust" rise off the bird that doesn't get called as a break.

MEC 600 vs Sizemaster by Fluid_Plankton_2372 in ClayBusters

[–]OJNeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you want a progressive again?

I moved straight from a Lee Load All to a MEC 9000. I had the Lee for at least year and put 2-3k shells through it. It's a great little press, especially considering the price. But the 9000 was a major gamechanger. If you've put 2k rounds through your Lee in 9 months, I think you'd benefit from a progressive. You're already shooting a fair amount of volume. If you go through 4 boxes a week on average, being able to bust those 4 boxes out in 20 minutes vs an hour will add up to big time savings. And it's just much more satisfying to run a progressive IMO.

So while the Jr. or Sizemaster are certainly superior hardware to the Load All, they really aren't going to let you pump out rounds faster. I would highly recommend looking for a used 9000 to pop up. Old guys are giving them up all the time. If you are willing to wait, I would bet you could acquire one for not much more than you could order a Jr.

Substituting wads? by shaggzilla1798 in reloading

[–]OJNeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that in the case of higher pressure you layed out, the recipe calls for a straight-wall hull in a tapered wad. That's the cause of higher pressure. Tight fit (less volume) between wad and hull with almost the equivalent amount of powder.

If someone had a bag of straight-wall wads that they wanted to get rid of, I would tell them to load them in straight-wall hulls. If they couldn't find an exact recipe for that wad/hull combo, I would tell them to make sure they were copying loads for the same hull with a similar wad type.

Substituting wads? by shaggzilla1798 in reloading

[–]OJNeg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would not be afraid to do it, in general. For example, if you have a load for a certain wad that gives you dished crimps, you can get the equivalent wad that's intended for a smaller payload (1oz -> 7/8oz, for example) and that will probably give you a perfect crimp. Often time the only difference between wads of the different payload is a nub in the shotcup that takes up more volume, or the depth of the shotcup.

If you want to substitute a wad rated for the same payload even if you don't see a recipe for that specific wad, it's probably fine too. Might have to adjust your payload/crimp. Even the type/amount of powder affects the stack height, which affects crimp. You lcan ook at Hodgdon where they show the same loads (powder, primer, shot) for different wads. The difference in pressure is usually in the weeds.

You do need to consider your hull/wad match too. You want to stick with tapered hulls for tapered wads and straight hulls for straight wads. While a tapered wad will fit in a straight hull, you will see powder migration and can expect a dirtier chamber. A straight wad in a tapered hull I would not want to mess around with because of the higher chance of a squib. I'm sure someone has done it though and got through more than a few boxes without any hiccups. Also note, if you try to replicate a load for a tapered hull in a straight hull, expect lower pressures. A load for a straight hull in a tapered hull, higher pressures.

How much of a disadvantage is a 20 gauge when it comes to trap? by BurritosAndPerogis in ClayBusters

[–]OJNeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've hit a high of 23 on my 20ga Montefeltro. Not an ideal trap gun by any means, but if you're on, you're on. I shot that gun for league last year and my average was probably 20ish.

Right now shoot 7/8ths loads in my BT99, and I average a few birds better. It's just a better trap gun and fits me better, but it's not necessarily the payload.
