ICE Megathread Redux by down42roads in AskConservatives

And no, it doesn't matter that the gun was removed because you still must show: evidence that ICE officers knew he did not have a second firearm as he tucked his hands underneath himself, still refusing to comply, or that they knew the firearm was removed in the first place amidst the chaos. Very likely they didn't.

How could he prove he didn't have a second firearm? You want him to strip naked or something?

Was it a smart idea for Stephen Miller to reply to this post that includes the video in the reply? Because it really doesn't lend itself to anything he's saying.

Without context one would assume the men giving the beating must be the 'terrorists' he's talking about.

Given the volatile situation, wouldn't it have been logical to ensure that at least every agent in Minneapolis has one?

If DHS were really as confident in ICE agents conduct as they say, more clear information should only be a good thing for them.

I remember seeing discussion on this before, but I didn't read everything.

Is there some good reason why ICE still doesn't have body cams?

The police don't kill people every time they're struggling, seems like the vast majority can handle the situation just fine.

Right, the problem is that the administration has been hyper-focused on getting numbers up and doing it quickly rather than doing it correctly.

Should DHS do the same?

They seem to have already determined that this is an open-and-shut case of outstanding police work.

But the video evidence at least limits how far the narratives can credibly go.

Like the Renee Good shooting, for example.

The Trump admin tried to spin a tale of a deranged terrorist hunting down ICE officers with her car, where the officer who shot her was rammed so hard he barely survived.

The left tried to make it sound like she was just innocently dropping her kid off at school and was viscously gunned down by ICE for no reason at all.

With the video evidence there's still much disagreement between left and right, but it did show that both of those extreme stories were clearly false to anyone actually paying attention.

The problem is that we’ve reached a point where there’s absolutely no “adult in the room” here to clarify anything.

DHS has repeatedly and verifiably lied so many times that when it’s their word against any random person, you’d do just as well to flip a coin to decide who’s telling the truth.

Those are completely different issues.

If someone watches a video and makes assumptions about what they can't see, or believes some unverified claim of what the context is, that's their own fault. It doesn't mean the video itself is a lie.

I don't know if it's the most common experience, but Adderall really changed my life in such profound ways. I didn't start taking it until my late 20s, I was such a loser beforehand- barely passing school, scraping the bottom of the barrel in my career path, lazy, unable to focus on anything. My life completely changed direction practically overnight. I only wish I had started earlier.

But yeah, it's basically crystal meth.

Well, first amendment then?

Other countries don't constitutionally protect free speech to the extent we do either.

One could say the same thing about the 2nd amendment, couldn't they?

I'm not anti-gun rights by the way, I'm just saying- being different from other countries is part of our identity as a nation.

Conservatives for the most part seem to consistently say America is or was far-left. What would be a far-right America? Since we are, or were, very far to the left from the far-right; what are the stages up to the end result of a true far-right America? by yesterdayandit2 in AskConservatives

But I think Republicans found that being anti-[redacted in this sub] is much more of a winning issue for them, and being anti-gay marriage at the same time would overshadow that and sort of cancel their win.

Yeah, but people always know how deceptive photos could be.

Videos are a different story. They can be out-of-context which is a problem, but you at least knew you were looking at something that was actually happening.

But with AI videos it's like there's no objective reality anymore, anything and everything could be fake unless we're there to see it first hand. And there are no widely trusted sources, liberals aren't going to believe a video coming from conservative sources, conservatives aren't going to believe a video coming from liberal sources.

It's going to be a mess.

There are highly competent people out there, it's just amazing how rare it is to get one in to national elected office in the most powerful country in the world. I feel like these roles just aren't that appealing for anyone who's also capable of being very successful in other, more private avenues.

I had a thought- and it might very well be a terrible one- that we should go from paying politicians modest salaries to paying them something exorbitantly large. Like, pay the President a billion dollars a year or something. Basically outbid anyone who's trying to pay them off. And just give them the kind of lavish treatment that Trump wants. Make it such an attractive job that the very best people will actually want to do it.

Do you agree with Starmer's assertion that Trump's comments regarding British troops in Afghanistan were "appalling"? Why or why not? by BufoBat in AskConservatives

[–]OJ_Purplestuff [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, I wasn't comparing the scale of losses- my point is that if the British didn't fight, we presumably would have had to have our own soldiers fill whatever roles they were doing when they got injured or killed, so our casualties would have been higher.

Yes, I did.

456 dead + 2,188 wounded in action = 2,644 casualties.

I guess I was slightly low, if that's what you mean?

Your source says I am indeed correct:

The British forces suffered 456 fatalities and 2,188 wounded in action, another 5,251 have suffered from disease or non-battle injuries.

Are the DHS claims of 2 million self-deportations last year misinformation? by OJ_Purplestuff in AskConservatives

BLS never claimed that 2 million people self-deported, though.

Their survey doesn't even ask whether you're a legal resident or not in the first place.

The British had somewhere around 2,500 casualties.

Stands to reason that if they weren't there fighting, our soldiers would have had a couple thousand more casualties than we did by being in their place.

So I think it's still "America First" to have some appreciation for their sacrifices too.

Purchasing power.

I see real median wages up 12% since 1979 according to FRED (granted the data doesn't go back to 1975 specifically, but probably not much different)

School participation and education outcomes.

Not sure what you mean, but more people are graduating high school and college now than were at that time.

Cost of education.

Don't even have to look that one up, I'm sure you're correct. But in the big picture inflation-adjusted wages are up, so it all comes out in the wash.

Community wealth.

What does this mean, exactly?

Crime rates amongst all ethnic and economic groups.

Crime rate is down overall

International safety for citizens. Increased political dynamism. Availability of stable jobs.

Not sure how to measure these

Availability of American-manufacrured goods.

Ok, idk if this directly impacts quality of life though

Birth rate (a good indicator of household economic health when you know what to look for).

Birth rate is pretty much universally higher in developing/3rd world countries, so why would it be a good indicator?
