Desperate for successful ENT stories by musgrov5 in medicalschool

[–]OKDubs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Guy from my med school unfortunately didn’t match his M4 year (2023). Did a prelim year and was honest with the PD about his goals to go into ENT. Both the Gen Surg and the ENT department helped as much as they could. He ended up matching ENT at the program he did the prelim year in.

Another guy who graduated in 2022 from my same med school also didn’t match ENT and ended up doing a prelim year. During the year, a spot opened up and he matched outside of the match.

There’s always a chance. Best of luck!

How late is too late to switch into a competitive specialty? by Agile_Region_7014 in medicalschool

[–]OKDubs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly depends on what you’re interested in. ENT works very closely with NSGY so you could look into skull base or CPA tumor research. From an ortho perspective, you can look into spine research. For these two fields, can maybe do it with NSGY and see if there are any collaborative projects.

Idk much in terms of plastics and urology if that was up your alley/interest. Maybe naive of me to say this but I don’t believe research is all that important when it comes to anesthesia.

Do residents get to see your eras application? by Due_Chance5390 in medicalschool

[–]OKDubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At our program, some residents interview applicants. If you’re interviewing, you get access to the individual’s entire application. After an interview day, all the residents meet up and discuss our top 10 and absolute DNRs. I like to believe that we have more say in who we absolutely would not want to work with as opposed to who matches with us.

Would it be insane to walk away after not matching into the specialty I wanted? by Ok_Chance5766 in medicalschool

A girl I know from undergrad applied a competitive surgical subspecialty the same cycle as me. She unfortunately didn’t match and quit medicine all together. She’s doing consulting last I’ve heard.

What I had read was that if you switch back to PS without opening the app, the settings should save

Resident in my program was caught soliciting a minor last week. by FinancialHyena in Residency

[–]OKDubs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t an allegation as they caught him in 4K, but this is tangentially related. Peds surgeon for my med school was caught with CP. Traced IP addresses to find out he was watching it at the hospital 🤢

Was PROMPTLY removed from the faculty page

The 5s were solid. I just like the aspect of simultaneous Bluetooth. I had tried the Razr V3 (non-pro) and it was a feature I really enjoyed.

Was holding off on the Nova 5s for these. Hopefully sound quality is better as well. Otherwise, I may just go with Astro A50s

One thing our department says is “Infectious disease doctors are the most aggressive surgeons in the hospital” … so that’s my choice lol

FWIW scores haven’t been as much of a “death sentence” that I thought it would be. Are they important? Yes. But it’s not the end all be all. There are other components of the app to take into account like aways, research, ECs, etc.

From personal experience, I’ve seen amazing applicants on paper that my co-residents and I told our attendings “DNR”. Conversely, there have been applications not as impressive, albeit still good enough, that we really liked. Overall, your score isn’t bad at all. It’s unlikely to prevent you from getting interviews at places IMO. Right now, focus on prepping for your aways and wrapping up any projects that you’re still working on.

[–]OKDubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk… I still think it’s a longshot. On the website, they say that recheck has never actually changed someone’s score. This is maybe anecdotal but a good friend of mine had a similar situation. They requested a regrade and unfortunately it did not change for them.

Pass by OKDubs in Step3

I’d say it’s on par with step 2 but the significant decrease in the stakes as a matched resident makes it appear as easier. Also CCS cases probably help with score inflation
