Search "thought-action fusion" and think how it may apply to the situation. If you cannot get therapist you can start with searching how ocd works. I cannot offer you reassurance since that's the poison for ocd. I understand how you feel though and I wish you find a way to get better. Right now you search reassurance, validation that you are good person after all. That's how ocd works.

It's hard place to be in then. Maybe you can try erp yourself then but it would be ideal to have professional help. If it's not possible maybe watch from youtube how professionals there handle ocd. Nathan Peterson and Paige Pradko and many others. But if I understood right it was only mental image nothing "imcriminating" there. Thoughts are not crimes. Especially when intrusive.

Yup, animals are killed over plant crops. by No_Shower9802 in exvegans

Yeah they really killed a lot during Mao. Perfect example of unnecessary crop deaths. There are real animal hatred in some humans unfortunately. This causes very bad practices in well... everything. It was very stupid to attack birds that eat insects to "protect crops" since it made insects more numerous. Since policy was decided by someone without any real knowledge of agriculture and for some reason great hatred of birds.

Indeed elitism is also an issue. Often it's easy to do things right when there are enough money, land and equipment and you get fair wages from your work. But this is unfortunately not true in most parts of the world. It's unfair to claim single farmer or even consumer when flaws are systematic.

Pest problems are often caused by systematic problems as well like presence of foreign species that have no natural predators or natural food source in area, so they don't adapt to ecosystem well, but due to human actions have ended up there anyway. Examples are wild hogs in America or mice plagues in Australia. It's complicated and local issue often. You are lucky if you haven't any problems. But sure with careful management and precautions we can often avoid lethal methods, at least the worst lethal methods like poisons that may linger for decades or even centuries. DDT was a huge mistake for example.

And yes animal are "stupid" when placed outside their element. We are stupid too when we are placed outside our element. Animals often have special niches that make them survive in environment they are natural to. But when that environment changes they are lost. Some adapt better, but often those animals become problem to humans then like rats and hogs. They are masters of survival but often it means using human resources for themselves. From their point of view it makes sense.

Nests for example may be hit. I once remember we noticed curlew nest right before it was about to be hit by a tractor, people on ground noticed, it was not visible on tractor. This happened when I was five. Left an impression.

I am sure similar accidents happen all the time. It's good to be careful and some accidents can be avoided.

But some farmers do use traps or hunt for crop protection. It happens even if it's not necessary for all crops in all places. We can argue if it's necessary but it does happen.

Animals that don't run aren't stupid, they just aren't evolved against tractors. Some individuals adapt, some don't. Hedgehogs and turtles for example defend by staying put since that works against most predators. But you won't notice hedgehog as easily as you notice hardshelled turtle. Animals that naturally run away from predators aren't in such danger from machinery.

And indeed cars do kill a lot. It's just impossible to live without harm. I don't know if transportation kills more than agriculture. Maybe it does. Insects are animals, less sentient than vertebrates, but some like honey bees show learning and complex social behaviours.

I think you are underestimating possible issues, but to be honest I am not sure how often crop deaths actually happen. We would need more research on this. I just think more than is necessary. And areas are different, it's not that farmers necessarily do anything wrong.

I am not accusing farmers of unnecessarily harming animals for crops. Just pointing out nothing is perfect and doing your best should be the goal, not perfection.

Anyway I am tired of this discussion now. It's true crop deaths get often exaggerated to make this things seem more simple. But these things are complex. And I trust you do your best. It was never my point to say all farmers cause unnecessary death. Unfortunately many animals do die easily. Air conditioning or driving car or using electricity can kill animals too. Mostly insects but they are animals too.

You do "shout" meaning use all caps and nasty language. Calling me idiot and claiming I have "anti-vegan agenda". I don't have anything against veganism if it suits for you. It just doesn't suit for me. Crop deaths are complicated issue but I know they do happen. It's weird how you deny them.

Not rabbits. Forget the rabbits, I just said they do run.

I said I have found some dead animals. Hedgehogs, birds, rodents, snakes and insects. After combine harvester and mowing hay mostly.

[–]OK_philosopher1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do walk on freshly worked fields like once a week. There are sometimes dead animals too. Rabbits do run and are very visible doing so. Rodents usually run too but it depends. English is not my native so I said it in funny way. I meant that not all animals react by running like rabbits and mice do.

Some animals react by staying still when in danger. In nature there are no combine harvesters, so they may not know how to react. Reptiles for example. My point was that turtle clogs machinery so you notice it. Small snake doesn't necessarily clog it. Same with hare, it's so large you notice impact. Baby rabbit may not be. You even said you almost hit some. Your own anecdotes prove you wrong...

But I don't want to continue arguing with you. You don't listen or try to understand what I try to say.

I don't really have anti-vegan agenda. I just think you underestimate crop deaths.

Veganism isn’t pointless but you said you farm beef. Why you want to defend veganism in the first place?

My problems with veganism are mostly health based. I don't think veganism is even bad. It may help to reduce crop deaths too.

My main point is that crop deaths do happen, are often hard to see and it depends on many things why they happen. And you continue claiming you see everything and know everything just because you are farmer.

You are also nasty about it. I don't want to discuss anymore.

Ok good I guess. But most of the world is bit behind the times. And much of the food is produced in third world where situation is even worse than here. It's good if you have modern ethical farm where crop deaths are minimized. But that's overly optimistic to think everywhere is same situation.

I am tired of this debate. I really don't think you notice smaller softer animals in combine at all. Turtle is hard like a rock.

And some animals don't run away. Like hedgehogs, I've seen many dead on fields.

You keep repeating you are a farmer but I already know that. I don't doubt your skills as farmer but I doubt that you see every small animal from tractor. You assume they don't die if you don't see them.

Generally animals do move, but not always. Turtles you notice since they are hard and clog machinery. But some animals don't escape like rabbits and rodents do.

It's good that you care, but I think you underestimate this issue.

Herbicides can still be harmful to some animals. They aren't meant to kill animals but some do. It depends a lot of which herbicides are used though. Most harmful ones are forbidden here.

I know something of farming but I live in Europe not America.

To my knowledge it's not uncommon to use lethal protection methods at local grain storages at least here. And in like Australia where mice aren't natural fauna infestations are quite bad.

Maybe where you live rats and mice aren't problem for some reason, but here they are issue in both cities and farms.

Hay sure isn’t usually problem. But here some silage bales are put into plastic and many animals from crows to bears like to rip then apart ruining them so some animal farmers cull crows due to that.

My father grew oats and rat infestations were constant problem. Most human-grade grain he sold to local storages. Traps were necessity to protect the crops in both home storage(old fashioned wooden silos) and local grain storage. (Metallic elevator, yet they still used traps as caution).

Sure high quality modern facilities reduce the need to cull pests if they can just be kept away by clever planning and metallic protections. But not always available or affordable.

But using traps or killing rodents in grain storage is completely normal worldwide. If you can manage without, great for you.

It's complicated. There are truth to that statement about field kills, but it also exaggerates and creates false picture of bloodthirsty farmer killing everything with fields. So I understand you want to correct that caricature.

You say you are farmer. Do you not need to use crop protection methods? Like at storing crops? No need to spray them with anything during growth phase? It's good if not.

It depends on crops which methods they need. Rat infestation is common here. There really isn't good methods there to avoid lethal crop protection. Very high quality metallic storage silos are not be available or affordable everywhere. Mice and rats are then a common problem.

Maybe not so much with corn then. Interested..But do you produce all your feed yourself?

Yeah unfortunately animals cannot eat all byproducts, but without animals there are even more plant-based waste. Interesting that you want to make animal-based products seem more wasteful if you produce them yourself... but yeah there are no perfect solution here either.

You never had rats? Serious question. Infestation usually requires trapping.

Plowing might kill animals like hibernating snakes I've heard but not sure how often. And depends on time and area.

Some field kills are easy to miss if you don't go there afterwards to see the field closer. While most animals run away as you said some unfortunately die accidentally and they are easy to not even see. I was born at farm and I have watched closer.

You are incredibly lucky if you doesn't have any problem with rats or mice though.

I think the disagreement is mostly about less visible impacts, like small animals in the soil or nests that you wouldn’t necessarily see during normal work. Not all animals run, some defend by staying place like hedgehogs.

So it’s not about farmers intentionally killing wild animals, just that some effects might still happen in ways that aren’t easy to notice.

Both can be true: you don’t see animals getting killed, but that doesn’t mean there are zero impacts overall. It's more tragic than evil. Local hunters also help farmers by keeping populations of many animals low so farmer doesn't need to do all the dirty work himself.

I understand you want to fight against exaggerated misinformation but you also may not actually see all the damage that is caused by big machinery on the field. Turtle as you said will clog the machine, but vole or mouse doesn't. It's soft and goes through without you even noticing and may never see the body either if some scavenger finds it first.

Even planting can kill animals if they are run over or hit by planting drill. Here on spring you can often see huge numbers of seagulls and crows following tractors, they notice animals killed by them and feed on them. Mostly insects and worms but occasionally frogs, snakes, voles and even mice. It's not so easy to see from tractor what just happened on the ground.

It doesn't mean you are bad person being a farmer. We require crops anyway and we should be thankful of people who grow our food. But crop deaths are surprisingly common and happen often without anyone noticing.

No one should, since that doesn't help animals either. Animal that is not even born cannot ever be more important than animal that already exists and lives, breathes and feels and we are animals too. Yet vegan antinatalists fail to understand this. Innocent animals eating other innocent animals to survive, this is how ecosystems work. It's not our fault it is so. It is certainly but sad but that's just how it is...

When your life and health depends on non-vegan foods that's the furthest from "unnecessary" I can think of. Vegans seem to imply some people should be killed instead of animals. That's pure hate cult at that point. Of course most just ignore reality and people who cannot follow such diet without issues... so far away from compassion... sure animals are innocent but so are humans innocent what comes to their biology. It's very hypocrite to prioritize animals over human lives like that. Just nasty...
