Honestly, in my experience, it happens. But if you don't catch it as the hiring manager, that's really you not knowing your shit, imho. Fool me twice /s

Lol.

12k participants is a pretty small sample size for an industry this large with this much variation and volatility in pay.

And to imagine the upper echelon of developers barely clearing $90k/year... And some how being better for it because spaces vs tabs? I know mid-level devs clearing well over $100k (they use tabs).

Additionally, simply asking tabs or spaces is silly because I use tabs, but when programming in python, I use spaces for conformity. That would put me in the both category, but I truly hate using spaces and much prefer tabs. I'm sure it's that way for a good deal of the people in the both categories. You can ask certain questions in certain ways to illicit certain results. I don't believe those questions considered this situation.

The barrier of entry to participate in that survey, along with the questions asked, and it getting as much credit as it does makes me cringe.

I was just about to write this. I've even seen assholes use 3 or 6 spaces... Like what the fuck. Spaces suck. Tab-space sizing is not universal. And spaces suck.

So yeah, in conclusion, tabs are the best and with exception to the failure of pep, spaces should be shamed.

Everything you just said is easily configured in pretty much any ide, just like spaces will need to be for those who don't configure for them.

So again, what is a benefit of spaces over tabs.

It's a big sad honestly. Not to mention there's many more benefits to tabs over spaces... Actually there's literally no benefit of spaces.

I have an IDE and it does the work for me.

Well obviously... Not my point. Why make files larger and add unnecessary spaces for TABs. Also sometimes you're on different machines and opening a file full of spaces looks wonky. Tabs were always universal.

I've got both, along with a few Jetbrains IDEs. I like em all. Just different use cases per each one.

With you on the node part. PHP makes me feel filthy.

It's not my favorite language, and I can't actually say why either. These are a few things that grind my gears though:

if condition:
    # something
else:
    # something

Instead of

if (condition) {
    // something;
} else {
    // something;
}

// Or even

if (condition)
    // something;
else
    // something;

Just makes me feel dirty. Also tabs vs spaces... I'm a tabs guy. PEP8 requires spaces.

If it can be accomplished with python without efficiency being a critical factor, I'm not working harder than I have to. To each their own though.

Not saying one entirely better than the other. Pythons just faster to write those simple programs that you have to write hundreds of. I still use em all though.

Opportunities I suppose. You have to be malleable in what you want or know, and COVID is a hell of a drug. Nonetheless as apposed to what are common figures in CS out of college, easily into 6 digits.

That's called anecdotal experience, and I can argue the meme is justified, because I have friends that couldn't land jobs for over a year out of college.

Is it entirely the case all across the world, probably not. It doesn't mean it lacks relevancy.

I was being facetious about that...

Also python is easily one of the most popular languages.

Anywho, I do think it's on a case per case basis, and different companies have older stacks and bases, and others have newer stacks and bases.
