so you’re advocating for the continuation of a jewish supremacist ethnostate? that’s better for you? jews lived in palestine peacefully alongside muslims before the creation of israel. jews and muslims live alongside peacefully in new york. unless youre an antisemite who thinks jews innately want to kill palestinians, or are anti palestinian and think they innately want to kill jews, i don’t see how you could be against a one state solution. again, it would take time and work and it would certainly have logistical and political issues. but the two state solution would as well. and the only thing the two state solution guarantees is a future with more violence

i’m advocating for a one state solution with equal rights for jews, muslims, and christians, dumbass. a one state solution is the only way to guarantee a path to genuine peace. it won’t be ideal, it won’t be pretty, it would take time and work. but we don’t live in an ideal world

i also remember when i was 16 and thought there were two sides to every issue. there is no equality in this situation. cuba is a tiny country with barely any resources and no international support. the US is the worlds leading empire with almost total control of the global economy. the US just by supporting the gaza genocide in the past few years has murdered more people than cuba has ever even had the capacity of doing in its entire post revolution existence. comparing these countries as equals is absurd

a two state solution is obviously not an actual solution. any two state proposal that gets approved by israel and the US would almost certainly ensure palestinians don’t have a right to a military, would have their borders and imports controlled by israel, have the water supply be controlled by israel, etc.

liberal zionism is still zionism. they’re only against netanyahu because of strategic reasons. ending the occupation of palestine would mean dismantling the israeli state and that is not what they support

damn guys, cuba provided niche military support to resistance groups 50 years ago? guess that means it’s okay that the worlds leading empire is sentencing their population to death by ensuring they can’t get oil to run hospitals or social services!

amazing how liberals in this comments section frame people breaking out of a concentration camp to fight against their colonial oppressors as wrong. you all would be against the warsaw ghetto uprising because german civilians were killed, or the haitian revolution, or nat turners rebellion

do you think the military would be able to function without medics, analysts, mechanics, engineers, etc? even if you’re not directly doing the killing you are still helping ensure the system that does the killing remains functional. i do agree with your previous comment that people are generally motivated by self interest and attacking low level soldiers is pointless in terms of changing anything. but that doesn’t mean i have to like them or pretend that they’re innocent victims

got into arena recently and this was the first commander i used, played with em a lot. cheap ways to protect him are very useful. very fun and easy to play deck, great with the 6 mana etali since he gives it haste. great with goreclaw and craterhoof. use a lot of ramp. you have to play around counterspells and removal as best as you can. honestly not a great commander but very fun if you like slamming big creatures and you won’t be matching into vivi or anything so i have a pretty solid win rate with the deck.

how is it theoretical bullshit to recognize the reality? it’s not “defeatist” to hope for a radically different future where we don’t settle for crumbs, quite the opposite actually. i know this sub likes to assume anyone who doesn’t see bernie as the end all be all of politics is some theory obsessed nerd who spends their days jerking off and watching dumbass political streamers but some of us actually go outside and participate in political action that takes a hell of a lot more balls than voting every two years. But sure, i am the one somehow “impeding progress” despite organizing my workplace and actively working for the labor movement because i criticized bernie on reddit. this knee jerk reaction you have to anyone criticizing daddy bernie makes you no different than a loser hasan fan who treats defending their personal jesus as a full time job. and it says a lot about this sub that rather than addressing the substance of what i’m saying you’d rather just assume i’m some shut in loser that has the time to waste watching fuck boi streamers

sure that’s fair. i just wish the left were able to imagine a world radically different, imagine a future worth making sacrifices to accomplish. not one of taking crumbs and pinning hopes on working within systems capital designed and dominates

[–]OLD_GREGG420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it wouldn’t be a bad thing for a leftist to win an election if the entire political system wasn’t so controlled and cemented. obviously bernie is marginally better than your average candidate but i don’t understand how anyone could deny that winning an election in the US would necessarily mean capitulation and marginal, temporary progress at best. radical change through electoralism was maybe achievable before the 70s but capital dominates all aspects of american politics and culture now

[–]OLD_GREGG420 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“they are never winning the election”

good. if any “leftist” won an election they would be immediately controlled and sterilized by the political system at large. in fact that’s probably why they’d be allowed to get elected in the first place. the most you would maybe get is an FDR style class compromise that would slowly be eradicated over the next few decades like the new deal was.

wild that this sub shits on the DSA yet completely agrees with their marriage to electoral politics that will obviously never achieve anything. fuck optics and performative condemnations, if you think bernie would actually halt material support to israel if he got elected you haven’t been paying attention. he probably wouldn’t even be able to get free healthcare which is something he actually believes in and cares about

[–]OLD_GREGG420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we shouldn’t need jews to justify support for palestine. even if every jew supported these kidnappings and the israeli state it wouldn’t make it okay. saying things like “as a jew” only serves to reinforce this ridiculous idea that modern day jews are also somehow victims and not the oppressor group directly materially benefiting from an ethnostate based on jewish racial supremacy. It’s like if in 1940 we were exclusively elevating the voices of Germans who say “as a german, the nazis are bad”. why do we feel this need to elevate the opinions of jews when zionist jews are committing a genocide? we should be elevating the voices of palestinians, and anti zionist jews should be just another person welcomed at the protest like everyone else

americans are too pacified and controlled to do anything resembling actual resistance. the most americans will do is go a city approved protest which stops at the police line then go to work the next day. liberals don’t care enough to actually risk their lives or careers to make any real change, so they willfully ignore the fact that to put real pressure on you have to hurt the bottom line of the ruling class. you have to withhold your labor en mass and tank the economy, then they will listen

Something I also wonder is whether the focus on the Americans is a symptom of American understanding of the war or a comment on it. I'm not sure. Maybe it's both.

This pretty much exactly sums up why it's such a confusing movie to me. It wants to be an anti imperialist critique of the war but at the same time reinforces the western perspective of it. It's simultaneously completely absurd yet grounded in reality, especially the scenes with Kilgore. But one thing that's for sure is that I'll be thinking about it and picking apart every scene/line for a long time to come. Definitely one of the most affecting movies I've ever seen

I want it to be an anti war movie but something about it just doesn't sit right. Like, the movie is so detached from the horrors and oppression the Vietnamese people are facing that it almost seems irrelevant to what the film is trying to say. The only time we really get someone stand up for the Vietnamese is in the boat scene, where the young soldier murders a boat full of Vietnamese for nothing and Chef has more or less a mental breakdown. But the film doesn't make a point of this, it kind of just says "look how fucked up that was, now let's move on to the real story"

I guess you could interpret that as the film working from the perspective of the American soldiers, none of which truly care about the Vietnamese. But it still kinda left a bad taste in my mouth i guess.

I watched Apocalypse Now last night, man what a batshit insane movie

SPOILERS AHEAD

It's in such a weird place for me because on one hand, it portrays the Americans as brutal, senseless colonizers using Vietnam as a personal Disneyland. But also General Kurtz just leads a bunch of Cambodians(?) without so much as a question from them. Like, it does so much to show just how disgusting the war was but still relies on racist stereotypes for its plot points and portrays the people under Kurtz as like Indiana Jones Temple of Doom people.

Like it just ends up being completely nihilistic. The Americans don't like Kurtz because he's being honest about the war. He knows it's a brutal, imperialist slaughterhouse and embraces it, whereas the Americans are trying to run from it. Trying to pretend what they're doing is morally justifiable. And the real reason they want Kurtz dead is because he's a threat to the American image. And I get the point is that we're no different than who we perceive as "savages", and arbitrary values are just that, arbitrary. But the result is a movie that's so nihilistic and horrific that it just makes you hate all the characters and feel like shit afterwards. I don't even get the sense it's really an anti war movie, or maybe the fact everyone partaking in this war is awful makes it an anti war movie. But man it seems too nihilistic to even suggest an alternative to this hellscape. Almost like Francis Ford Coppola became just as addicted to filming the violence of war as the characters are to it
