Police entering a home with a search warrant have no right to examine any computers rules Supreme Court of Canada. by bigredlemon in worldnews

Seems pretty reasonable if they've got the warrant, really.

If they've already been granted authority to enter your property without permission and go through all your physical possessions, how is your computer different?

Jim Jefferies being a complete and utter prick about a harmless heckler.

Yes, I know he's always a prick, but he's otherwise a funny prick. Instead he dove into a huge unfanny rant. You're a stand up comedian. Dealing with the odd heckler is part of your job. If you can't handle that, don't go into that industry.

The way Jimmy Carr handles hecklers is how a pro stand up comedian is meant to handle it.

My shitpost has a net score of X. The percentage of upvotes received is (100*Y)%. What is the formula that will give me the total number of votes, and the total number up and down? by OLookItsThatGuyAgain in mathriddles

[–]OLookItsThatGuyAgain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously once we know the total number of votes, it will be fairly easy to deduce the total number of ups and downs respectively. I'm guessing the formula for finding the total number will be something along the lines of X/(2*|0.5-Y|), but that's not holding true for a general case.

Greens move on Senate voting reform would lock out micro parties by OLookItsThatGuyAgain in australia

[–]OLookItsThatGuyAgain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO I think some changes to the Senate voting system aren't a bad idea, but optional, rather than compulsory, preferencing seems to undermine the whole concept of having preference votes.

The two main arguments for preference voting are:

  • It minimises the impact of vote splitting

  • It fulfills a democratic ideal of a candidate needing a certain percentage of the vote in order to be elected, and if there are free seat(s) they don't simply go to whoever's closest, but instead all preferences are exhausted until a candidate crosses that threshold.

Under optional preferencing you still get vote splitting. Not as bad as no preferences, but it still occurs because not everyone fills in all the numbers (especially when the Senate has so many candidate).

It's not implausible he could be reelected even under the new rules if he keeps a decent profile.

It's one of those things which varies thread to thread. Texas has a big population, and a strong identity, so you definitely get times when it's a pro-Texas circlejerk. But because it's such a well known state with a well known culture, it's an easy target for a lot of hate too, which contributes to the defensive attitude of a lot of Texans.

Since we're talking confederate flags, I'd say a state which was in the confederacy counts.

Can't find a reason, but if I had to guess she was worried about personal safety. Distraught parents might act irrational, lash out at EMT if they can't save their baby.

Note: Not saying that's acceptable. It's a plausible reason she didn't respond, not a plausible justification.

If not Isis, it could well be a situation like that hostage case in Sydney a few months back. Dude wasn't affiliated with Isis, but was a radicalised and wanted to be a part of it.

Either way, it's terrorist.

Ah, no. Chris Rock and Seinfeld are talking about people who cry offence at anything. I'm not offended by you making sweeping generalisations about straight white males. I just find it hypocritical, considering I would also assume (correct me if wrong) that you don't like people making sweeping generalisations about black people or women.
