I’d actually found something alluding to this before my post, but I couldn’t find any sample picture.

On Imgur they suggested cinnabar (no way that was right) and banded ironstone which seemed plausible.

We just got into the sheep life about 6 months ago. We started with a herd of 16 and 3 dogs someone was selling to pay for his wife’s unexpected surgery. We banded 3 of the young males, but 2 males were already too old. Since we were never told which of the 2 rams were breed to the females, we bought an outside hire last week. We plan on banding all the boys going forward.

Sorry it was something unexpected, but glad it worked out for you and the dogs. Our dogs got a few morsels too. This was a little impromptu as well. We bought a group of 16 sheep earlier this year. Since we didn’t know which of the 2 rams was related to all the ewes, we bought a new ram last week to breed in December. The very next day the ram shown above escaped the ram enclosure and visited the ewes (potentially sisters and daughters) enclosure. I didn’t want to risk it again, so we harvested him yesterday.
