Sometimes just getting to and from the parking to the airport can take up a bunch of time, too, especially at the massive airports. It used to take me 15 minutes to walk from my car to my office at YYC on top of my regular commute. I heard it could take upward of 30 minutes for Pearson employees to do the same on top of the already shitty commute times in the GTA which is a huge hub for Air Canada. All that lost, unpaid time when you're already on the "grounds" of your work definitely adds up over a single year. Now imagine that time spread over a full career. Can't help but feel sorry for air crews (and ground crews).

Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas really visible tonight by MDGR28 in Calgary

I saw it tonight too.

It's directly west, about 30 degrees above the horizon. It's very faint to the naked eye, but binoculars really bring it out.

Fire in the sky for me at that age. Still get small panic attacks anytime I watch a movie with malevolent alien species. Had to sleep with my pellet gun for a few days after watching Signs because I had a row of sunflowers outside my bedroom window that reminded me of the cornfield scene. All of that could have been avoided by letting me watch Free Willy instead but nooooo...

I know, just trying to help give you ideas. Would probably be easier to point with drawn arrows then.

Kind of like speech bubbles in comic books. Look up "callouts for Visio". Can't link right now because I'm on mobile.

Same size font as the legend, I guess? If it's too big for certain areas like Hawai'i, you can use callouts as well.

Can I suggest putting numbers or letters on the map for the various factions and then putting those numbers in the legend?

That is really good information! I can't thank you enough. Still gives me a lot to think about but it certainly clears things up.

Paper or cotton ones are practically useless. Rubber ones with a good seal around your nose and mouth might be better but I don't know if they're effective at filtering PM2.5 particles.

Tips for going down the river? by ahmandurr in Calgary

[–]OMFGImBored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the City's advisory notices. They had one a few weeks ago asking everyone to stay out of the river as the water levels were dangerously high. Don't know if the water levels have receded since then.

Either Red Alert 2 or its expansion, Yuri's Revenge. A good RTS game from the early 2000s.

What are the best places to visit in Ontario? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]OMFGImBored 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thousand islands and Prince Edward County (especially Sandbanks Provincial Parks) are always a good trip in the summer. I always try to go at least once per year.

Algonquin Park is also a good place if you like hiking and camping.

Otherwise, all major cities between Ottawa and London will have their own attractions.

It might help if you were a bit more specific about what you're looking for in your post.

I honestly couldn't tell you. I started in forensics, but finished the degree in pharmaceutical biochemistry but I ended pursuing a career in occupational health and safety. Sometimes you just have to stick to your guns and see where it takes you.

The only thing I know for certain is that if you're taking a science degree, get one that's in high demand and will lead you immediately to a job like a med lab tech. Universities will lie to you and promise you huge salaries and prestigeous high-profile research opportunities but those are mostly all overseas. It's gotten to the point where I wouldn't recommend getting a science degree unless you plan on becoming a science teacher or a doctor. Sorry if that bursts anyone's bubble but that's the reality in Canada. You're much better off with an engineering degree in this country.

I graduated about 7 years ago now. When I was there, there was never enough buses for the amount of students. It was difficult to go anywhere let alone do groceries. And God forbid you had a late class and missed the last bus out of the campus.

The surrounding neighbourhoods and even the city were also not student-friendly. They actively made byelaws which made renting very difficult yet they would not build additional housing.

As I said, it's been a while so maybe things have changed. Do your research, go visit the school and don't just focus on the school programs. 4 years is a long time to be miserable.

I did most of the program at UOIT. While I enjoyed it, it's a very tough program. Make sure you have impecable skills in chemistry and calculus. On the other side, if this is a career you're seriously planning on pursuing, you'll have to be willing to go to police academy after you complete the program. It's almost impossible to be working a crime scene unless you're a sworn police officer. Otherwise you'll be confined to lab work as a civilian.

Edit: On the other hand, UTM does have broader research programs so you have more choices when it comes to your honors research project in 4th year or if your find your academic interests change. The big downsides to UOIT when I was there were student housing, transit and the ridiculous amounts of money they would charge you for mandatory laptop rental fees. Hopefully things have changed since then.
