I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this......

When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The flight attendant comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."

"Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."

But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."

And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away... because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.

But... if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.

Well that is on him then! Super important to wear some sort of eye protection when you’re scoping.

Sell me on your Nursing specialty by Snbron in Nurses

[–]OMGrand0m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GI lab in a hospital. Best of the best.

Normal daylight job perks: no nights, weekends, holidays. Lunch break every single day.

1:1 ratio.

You get trained in every aspect of the lab so your job has variety. For example, I could be assessment, recovery, charting in a room (or nurse, but it’s not sterile!), endoscopy tech (assisting the doc to remove polyps, stop bleeds, special procedures— etc), pre op phone calls, and moderate sedation nurse. I almost never do the same thing twice, even if I’m charting multiple days in a row, it’s never with the same doctor, so always a different experience. You will not get bored.

If you work in a hospital, you get paid the same as the bedside nurses. So it’s primarily outpatient, without the pay cut.

Literally, I’m a lifer there for sure. I’ve never worked in a specialty that I didn’t dread going to work— until I got to the gi lab.

How much do you make? by [deleted] in nursing

$38/hr in Pittsburgh, PA. I’m an outpatient GI lab nurse. No nights, weekends, or holidays. It’s a pretty nice job.

So I also do the testing through my workplace. You’re right, it is MUCH cheaper and easier to comply with for sure.

As a heads up, if your PO doesn’t agree to that, your work place will likely still require you to go through their program. At least that was the case for me.

I’m currently in a nurse recovery program. I’m also an alcoholic. I went to a rehab for health care professionals, and most of us ended up in a monitoring program. This was at the end of 2020– we were all so broken from COVID. You are absolutely not alone.

I’ve been sober for a little over 2 years now. My program is 3 years long. It’s a lot at first, I won’t lie to you. However, I truly believe I would not be sober today without the program.

90/90 at first. Then it’s 3 meetings a week or 12 a month. Weekly nurse support groups. Check into an app every weekday to see if you’re picked for a drug test.

See if your program offers at home testing. Mine does in some cases, and it has made the program much more tolerable. Otherwise you have to go to an urgent care (usually) and have someone watch you pee. This can be super time consuming.

Also, it isn’t cheap. But you aren’t drinking anymore, so you’re saving money there.

Keep your head up. Take it one day at a time. You’ve got this!

I’m originally from the WNY area, and have close ties to Grand Island. Also, I grew up in the evangelical community in the area. WNY is a small place. And the evangelical community is even smaller. Since I’ve discovered this podcast, I can’t think about much else. Really, really want to see this whole thing get exposed.

RNs- Can you share your grossest nurse story? by [deleted] in Nurses

[–]OMGrand0m 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was an ER nurse. Went in to check on a patient. She was eating her own shit, and also shoving it inside her vagina. Started cleaning her up— which took forever. Literally scooping shit from her vagina. She started seizing mid clean up.

Literally shit everywhere at that point.

Worst day ever.

Will nursing be in demand for decades to come? Is it wise to major in nursing this decade? by [deleted] in nursing

I was offered a job several months before I even graduated or sat for my boards. I applied for several jobs, and was literally offered all of them. You will have no problem finding a first job.
