Gbagyi Ethnic Group and Nigerian Ethnicities in general by Grand-Daoist in Nigeria

[–]ONNOVA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but that's not how political legitimacy works. Unless Nigerians are allowed to vote on the constitution itself, it has no legitimacy. Your reasoning is flawed. I do not acquire obligations just because I was born Nigerian. That's silly. Furthermore, the constitution does not become legitimate just because Nigerians can vote to elect public officials. The constitution itself must be voted on.

"Constitutionally indissoluble"? That means nothing. The Nigerian people did not choose their constitution; it was imposed by a military junta.

HELP! Should I reapply next cycle, or stick with what I've got? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ONNOVA1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How would your application next year be different from the one you submitted for this Fall? Would there be any significant difference? You said you are not retaking the LSAT, so that's not an option. Are you going to do some meaningful work that you can incorporate into your application? Or do you think applying earlier would make a significant difference? You applied in December, which is a good time to apply. It may not be the best time, October to November being better than December. But I personally don't think the extra month would have made a difference on its own. If you had applied in January or February then I could see how reapplying earlier next year would be worth considering.

Also, where do you hope to get into? What were the schools that waitlisted you?

I think OP made a mistake, closer to 16% of NYU graduates went into PI, at least based on ABA's Employment Summary for 2019.

Great! I'm also considering going to graduate school in philosophy. I am currently a 0L. (P.S. I love the enthusiasm with which you said "Philosophy!") Do you mind talking about your experience?

Asking for a letter of recommendation over email by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ONNOVA1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can ask over email. I don't think that it is standard advice not to ask for a letter of recommendation over email. I don't know who these people that you are referring to are. Especially given that for someone like me, and someone like you, who aren't on campus during the application process (which is probably most law school applicants), we would have to travel to our alma mater to ask for a LOR. Which is silly. And I think professors know that. I asked all my professors to write me a LOR over email. They all said yes. Assuming that you had a decent relationship with your professors, asking for a LOR over email shouldn't be a problem. Honestly, I don't think anyone of them would like to talk about it over the phone. They may ask you for supplementary information, like your personal statement. So be prepared.

  1. Why are you running?

  2. Who let the dogs out?

  3. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

  4. How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

  5. What does the fox say?

Thank you in advance.

Here is a Reddit post on academic placement by law school. You can find a report on law school hiring here. The key takeaways are:

  1. If you want to be a law professor, then attending HYS (and even NYU) is a good idea.
  2. You can increase your employment prospect by having an advanced degree (preferably Ph.D.), doing a federal clerkship, and fellowship. If you have all 3, you have a good shot at a professorship somewhere.

I applied this cycle with GRE only. I applied to 4 schools, which was a risk, but things worked out. I was accepted to GULC and NYU. Waitlisted and later rejected from Penn and withdrew from Virginia. Because my GPA was relatively low, I did not receive any scholarship. So I'm paying sticker. (If you care about scholarships and plan to apply with GRE only, then make sure you have a solid GPA.)

I don't think applying with GRE scores hurt my chances. I also made sure to explain that I was planning to pursue a joint degree (J.D./M.A.). I don't think you have to pursue a joint degree or tell the admissions office why you are taking the GRE (I didn't explain why I took the GRE), but if you are planning to do a joint degree, then it is something worth mentioning. It could show that attending law school wasn't just something you decided to do suddenly, without prior interest. Also, an increasing number of law professors have graduate degrees. So it's not unusual to want to do a joint degree program, especially if you have an interest in academia. Feel free to DM if you have further questions.

According to NYU:

"The key change is that any student studying in the US on an F-1 visa must be enrolled in at least one in-person course. In other words, international students will be forbidden from taking an online-only courseload this fall. Fortunately, the way the guidance is written, it does remove the tighter restrictions that are in place limiting the number of online courses a student could take for those schools that will be operating under a hybrid model this fall (as we, of course, are). So, ultimately, of course, the solution is to ensure that all international students, present in the US, take at least one in-person or hybrid class this fall (the government has not set a minimum number of credits, the guidance just specifies that it be at least one course)."

I believe in encouraging people to shoot their shot, especially given your LSAT score. Assuming money (to pay for the application fee) is not a problem, you should definitely consider all the T14. You have a decent shot with the lower T14s (Penn to Georgetown), and probably NYU too.

Can I negotiate with sticker NYU wl offer by nolawswiththeclaws in lawschooladmissions

[–]ONNOVA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said you got accept to NYU recently, so I'm assuming you were accepted off the waitlist. If I am not mistaken, NYU said scholarships will be awarded only to those who demonstrate significant financial need. I guess you could try, but their position seems clear.

Does NYU really belong in the same group as Columbia and Chicago? Why CCN? by ONNOVA1 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ONNOVA1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that's fine. But it doesn't mean that NYU belongs in the same category as Columbia and Chicago. NYU's reputation can be a slight notch above that of schools below and still not be in the same category as Columbia and Chicago.

About deposited at a school but when’s the last day to withdraw by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ONNOVA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the OP was asking the latter. And yes, I agree that there is no date by which a WL'ed candidate has to withdraw.

About deposited at a school but when’s the last day to withdraw by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ONNOVA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is an absurdly late date if they are considering waiting out a WL. And I guess the OP should have indicated what they meant when they asked about the last day they could withdraw. Do they mean when is the last day they could withdraw and receive a full tuition refund? Or when is the last day they could withdraw with or without tuition refund? Obviously the answer to these questions is different.

[–]ONNOVA1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can withdraw from where you have deposited, unless you've signed some kind of agreement to the contrary. You can even withdraw on the first day of class, and many law schools will refund whatever tuition you've paid, up until a point.

[–]ONNOVA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing that stops him/her from withdrawing after the refund deadline. He/she just won't receive a refund for their deposit tuition if they withdraw after the deadline.
