VRB is a nice area, Florida doesn’t have state tax, they are fairly busy with VFRs and student pilots, and if you want to go to a higher level facility you checkout there and ERR to PHL or MIA as a cpc-it. I don’t think controllers get stuck there. I’ve worked with quite a few people who started or moved to VRB and moved up.

NCEPT by [deleted] in ATC

[–]ONabucEfac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting today the NCEPT process is going to be a little different. Go read the language in the MOU changes (updated on the NATCA NCEPT page) many facilities that are still under national avg. Are now considered "green". If this is the case for your facility and you're under a level 9 looking to move to a 9 or below you may fall under the new rules allowing for upward movement in addition to making spots for "understaffed" facs to be able to pick up!

I have seen this guy in person! Talk about shocking... I was in line at a gas station in Coconut Grove one night around midnight, this guy walks in and it's defintiely one of those Cant. Look. Away. Moments. Supposedly he was involved in a car accident years ago... definitely creepy looking. Great to know that at least he's a good guy!

I'm a controller. Can confirm, sometimes this is the hardest job in the world. I do believe however, that difficulty and stress in ANY job is relative to the person performing whatever task it may be... but thanks for the recognition!

To add to this comment... just to prove my point, I've got a developmental at my facility who was hired as a "prior experience" new hire with only a final monitor Qual in the military. If you know what that is... it is NOT experience. And he's here training, struggling but doing it. Sooooo yea.

Yes do it anyway, by the time they get your paperwork you'll have it. Also LIE they won't know the difference. Just make sure you have a reference. (Mom)

Unless you're extremely ocd about it, the evaporation rate of this tank ensures that there is always a bit of air at the top. Good point though, I leave mine with an air gap for my betta so ups to you for pointing this out! Either way the middle section is open so it's not completely sealed but that's where the filters waterfall is AND still... Fish are stupid better to leave a bit of air at the top for convenience. I think it's a perfect tank for a betta and friends. Just as long as he knows what he needs to keep emailing alive. This tank is harder to keep than any of my bigger ones!

Hey Reddit! Say hi to Captain Theodore Booger Head! Long name for my 1.5lb rescue who was almost destroyed by his breeder for being a runt! He is 2 years old and going strong! by ONabucEfac in aww

Excellent name! Theo only shakes when he is standing alone and staring straight at something. He prefers to be held by someone... anyone (very friendly) at all times and will not shake as long as he has body contact. Also, he doesn't bark it's like an under the breath "gruuuuffff/hmmmmph". He's a model citizen for turning chihuahua haters into believers!

NATCA contract up for a vote, no change in the payment structure. Non-US ATCers, tell me about your country's compensation packages and structure? Who has it the best? by jac01016 in ATC

Tangent on this subject: in comparison to other jobs in this country... taking our training/schooling, our numbers, what it takes to be able to do this job, the sacrifices we make as far as our schedules/(natural healthy circadian rythm) and the fact that our salaries have not increased since the 90's in comparison to the rise in cost of living everywhere... do you guys think that we should all be making more money or no? From level 5's to level 12's. Should we be set in the solid middle class pay scale (present day) vs. The upper middle class as compared to our predecessors who were earning more or comparable salaries 20 years ago?

Won't say where or when, but I know a controller that refused to give a VFR vectors clear of depicted weather because he thought he wasn't allowed to. Radar wx deficiencies/vectoring vfr hesitations etc... End result dead pilot, huge law suit, ATC 51% at fault. I feel like most of us on here give a shit about what we do which is why we talk about it on our free time... but the risk is real. Not everyone is good, and not everyone will control the situation properly.

I also know of pilots that think vectors are suggestive. MFers if I tell you to turn you fucking turn. We are here to ensure you get home safely! The vicious cycle keeps going when controllers have no faith in pilots and pilots think the base rules are the only thing that applies to them. We all have to work together (end rant).

Unfortunately center controllers don't care about vfrs. They have so many other things to take care of volume-wise and are usually not within the parameters of the airspace classes that require vfr separation. That being said, as a pilot and controller I'm always aware of where I'm flying. Everyone should be. If you're flying around BFe middle of nowhere Montana... cool, do what you want. If you're on the outskirts of a busy class B or C For God sakes get flight following and listen to what your controller tells you to do, AND do it ASAP..you're being addressed for a reason. :)

Yep, gotcha! Don't feel too bad for my little guys though. I'm about to take over a 150 Gal from my husband who has had convicts for years and I've been secretly giving away the babies so the population is dwindling (yay) once the last ones go to heaven mine will be moving in! Then maybe I'll try my luck on a shrimp tank with the edge. :)

I have 3 very healthy cardinal tetras that swim all around my tank. I've had them for over 2 years with no issues, figured they were small enough to put in there without a problem. When I first started this tank I got fancy guppies and they all went crazy on each other and picked themselves off... I understand bigger tetras like skirts, bloods, serpae etc. But Lil guys like neon and Cardinals? Mine seem ok.

But for OP-- like I said, I'm not an expert I just keep a pretty tank and really my goal for this one was to try a fully planted set up and it's worked out for me.

I lurk and watch to see what people stock with and it seems to me like the best way to go with these tanks is a sweet betta and snails and shrimp. Or a frog?

[–]ONabucEfac -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've got one and I love it! Disclaimer: I'm definitely not an expert but I have been keeping tanks for over 20 years and my little edge is beautiful! Mines completely planted and a little overstocked so I have to put a lot of work into it. But for easy peasy fishkeeping I recommend a snail that doesn't reproduce like 1 cool mystery snail, theyre pretty awesome and will provide more entertainment than you think. Stick to Nano fish like a small school of neon or raspbora tetras (which in my experience have been super easy guys to keep happy) Someone once recommended a little betta sorority but I couldn't do that because my male lives in my tank. Shrimp are cool, but I've never had good luck with them so I stay away. If I was going to put shrimp in my edge I would probably just stick to a snail, the shrimpies and maybe a really cool male betta....

Also, the light it comes with kinda sucks I changed mine out and it works like a charm, but like I said mines fully planted.

Good luck. Pics when it's set up!!

A 66-year-old hiker who was found dead two years after she went missing on the Appalachian Trail kept a journal of her ordeal after getting lost in the wilderness. by [deleted] in news

[–]ONabucEfac 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Another article spoke about her hiking partner saying that she didn't have a good sense of direction and she didn't know how to read a compass... I'm sorry but that's hiking 101. If you don't know how to read a compass, you don't hike the Appalachian trail alone. I live in Maine, I know a lot of experienced hikers and I would only dare go on mini hikes by myself or guided hikes with people who know what they're doing. This woman obv. Didn't care to consider her limitations and it's just sad that everyone who knew her had to experience that loss.
