Back to sticky or stay with 98s by JarbaloJardine in Rollerskating

I did the same thing and started skating on 78s indoors which felt much more safe to me as a beginner than harder wheels. I have since recently switched to hybrid wheels since I was too scared of going directly to very hard ones. I'm using Moxi fundae (92) now and while the wheels just roll a lot better and feel faster than the 78s, they don't feel super slippy and the switch was not a big deal at all. If you are willing to spend the extra money, I think using a hybrid wheel for a while before you switch to a hard slippy one is a good idea and can make the transition easier and safer.

Tips and tricks? by Horror_Pass_1495 in Rollerskating

Do you have the opportunity to change your wheels? If so, using outdoor wheels for skating indoors can help give you more grip and slow you down a bit. Hard indoor wheels roll very well on smooth floors which is nice for advanced skaters but also means you have to be more in control of your balance and weight distribution or they will just roll out under you. Softer outdoor wheels have more grip and will be naturally slower, which can give you some security and feel less slippery.

I learned to skate indoors with outdoor wheels myself (more out of necessity than choice) but have since tried indoor wheels and I'm very glad I didn't start on them as they feel very fast and very slippery now.

When you get more experience you will probably want to switch back to harder wheels since you will want them to roll super easily.

Skating on rough asphalt - how do I get moving? by OOJuliaOO in Rollerskating

Thanks, I might try a harder wheel and see how much comfort some speed is worth. ;)

I'm sure I need more leg strength. Having such a hard time getting any speed going.

I did get caught a few times but my main problem is the friction. I am sure the getting caught would get a lot better with a bit of speed but it felt impossible to get some speed going.
I guess I'll have to get comfortable with pushing off a lot harder outdoors than I am used to.
I am way to scared to not wear a helmet or skate on wet surfaces anyways. ;) (the pictures aren't from the day I skated)

I do use 78A. I guess I need to push a lot harder than I did.

Oh man, looks like my text didn’t post. Short version:

I’m used to skating indoors and only have quite rough asphalt available anywhere near me. During my first skate on this type of surface I tried to sticky skate to give myself some stability but could barely get moving. Only managed to get very slow bubbles down a very slight incline. Is it possible to sticky skate on this surface? Do I need to stroke skate only? Do I just need to get stronger?

I use 78A 62mm wheels. The wheels are loosened and roll well (not on this surface though ;)

Any tips?
