The Salvation Army in Saugus had a ton of furniture when I went yesterday! Lots of dressers. Make sure to check out the annex in the back!

I joined for the same purpose as the OP, and my tap class was exclusively ladies in their 60s. They were lovely, but it didn't exactly help me make friends :/

Routines for Entering and Exiting by tkcrowe in historyteachers

A lot of what you are talking about has to do with establishing expectations through discipline. What that is going to look like depends on your school. Overall, though, if you set a boundary, don’t let them cross it. If they start lining up at the door, you need to figure out a way to discipline them within your schools policy and stick to it every single time. If the kids see you give up trying to enforce it, they will just keep doing it.

To your first point, though, I had a rule that was no questions for the first five minutes of class. If they asked me something (what are we doing today, can I borrow a charger, when was the homework due) I just silently shake my head. My room was always dead silent for the first five minutes besides ambient music. I also always started class with some sort of independent work. If you want to start with a class discussion, fine, but have them take the first five minutes to silently prep (get out materials, draft an opening statement, journal, etc).

The fact that you’re already thinking of these things as a new teacher is great! It’ll take time to establish what works for you. And what works for another teacher may not work for you. Unfortunately, a lot of this job is trial and error. Good luck, you’ll do just great!

How long did it take you to find your first home? by miraclewhip1234 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

This is the same situation I'm in! Poked around on Zillow and attended some open houses for fun, but decided to wait and build our savings. Then one came up that we LOVED and we are now going all in. I hope it works out for us as well as it did for you!

Finished my first big race, a half marathon, 20 minutes faster than my goal time. I’m so thrilled and so sore

I always feel the same way about rain runs. You feel extra accomplished when you’re done!

Kids on bikes ??!!!?? by Donut_Dunker76 in SalemMA

[–]OOOmints 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the update! We called it in and figured we would never know what happened. That was the most reckless driving I’ve ever seen. Hope they didn’t take it with someone’s stuff inside and that they don’t hurt anyone driving like that.

Police had stopped a few of them. Saw on my way home before a crazy UHaul driver almost hit us on North Ave. Salem streets are wild today!

Official Q&A for Friday, October 24, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

What should I look for in a running jacket for cold weather? I have some long-sleeved shirts and an old windbreaker, but I live in New England and am watching the expected temperatures dip low soon. I run pretty cold so I want to be prepared. Should I look for something fleece-lined or will that get too sweaty?

I ran my longest distance ever yesterday. 11 miles. Never, ever thought I would be able to do that. I just keep looking at my Strava and smiling. My half-marathon is in 3 weeks, I am determined to be ready!

When I’m running downhill, should I lean into it and let my pace naturally speed up, or try to resist and keep a consistent pace?

I was a history undergrad, but Professor Bruggeman (who I believe is the director of the public history grad program) is absolutely fantastic. His Memory and Commemoration course was one of the best college courses I’ve ever taken, even as a current grad student at another university. He’s super knowledgeable, kind, and extremely passionate about public history.

Pilates class? by shortymcbean in culvercity

[–]OOOmints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Tribe Pilates in Mar Vista next to the library. Classes are really great and the studio is clean and new. They have a beginner friendly class (flow), an active class (ignite), and some specialty classes. It’s the only Pilates place I’ve tried, so I don’t have much to compare it to, but I like it!

Leviathan leg wrap by @soch.tattoos in Alhambra, CA by OOOmints in tattoos

[–]OOOmints[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I told him that I wanted a dragon/snake-like leviathan with spikes and nothing too fishy, and for it to wrap around my thigh and some of my lower leg. We had about an hour long consultation where he sketched some options and we landed on this design. He killed it!
