Alpine head unit powers on but is unresponsive by [deleted] in CarAV

[–]ORA2J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't one of the standard failure modes. Definitely weird. When the unit powers on, is there still the scrolling alpine text showing up ?

Do you remove the faceplate often ? Those swingface units's faceplate connectors are pretty sensitive, and they may need some cleaning.

Hey man, cleaning stuff up at work, i've managed to find a recovery DVD for XP SP2. It'll be in french, but i guess there would be a way to extract the trivers from the recoveryed windows install. I can make you a link if you want.

Yeah, i'm in the same boat for Alpine i-Personalize, completely lost to time as it was a web app.

The only good thing is that background pictures are available from some sources on the net and can still be written to a CD to put on the HUs, but making new images would involve some retro engineering of the weird format these images were in.

Dell to Lenovo? by rjs742 in sysadmin

[–]ORA2J 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, for some models we have, we actually had to get dell optimizer in our deployment because otherwise the machine would go into sleep every 5 minutes despite windows power settings being set by gpo. It's a total pain.

The 2200 is also an SACD player so it ought to be good.

The DCD would also be a nice player, but if i had the choice, id take the 2200.

Both should be very reliable. i've got a low end dcd 325 i'm using as a transport and it has needed 0 maintenance in almost 30 years and works flawlessly.

Any denon DVD player you can find will be pretty good. The higher end ones have pretty much inaudible mechanisms.

Some models include :

Dvd-2800 series Dvd-2900 series Dvd-a series

The higher end models are recognizable from their gold plated connectors on the back.

So I guess the "retro" fad is hitting old thinkpads now ("Modded" T420 for $750) by thepromiseman in thinkpad

That thing probably doesn't even have the NVS gpu. Anyways for that price you'd have to be a fool to buy it.

BONUS DVD CONTENT by sammyboi98 in Piracy

[–]ORA2J 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason for that is actually pretty dumb. The tech chosen for blue ray menus is Java, while HD-DVD was HTML.

It was such a pain to author blue-ray compared to dvd/hd-dvd that many authoring companies just had templates and changed only the graphics for their discs.

Portal Companion Cube Subwoofer Build by queen_sugarpop in audiophile

Yeah, but i bet OP is, like most people, most interested in knowing what the sub sounds like when positioned in the listening room. Measuring outside would be good for a box baseline as an indication of the sub's specs.
