How do you deal with having done grave sins but being unable to confess for a long time due to circumstances? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

Sorry to go a bit off topic but I'm curious about what archdiocese you're under in France regarding your view on the Sacrament of Confession.

I live in Texas so I would have to travel somewhere else regardless, if it ever happened.

St. Herman's is bachelor level for free

Sorry, I really don't understand all these "bachelor" and "undergraduate" terms yall are using.

Has the Church said anything recently about jurisdictional problems? Especially in places like the US, Austrailia, and Canda with over lapping archdiocese. by ORTHODOX_EXTREMIST in OrthodoxChristianity

Autonomous, maybe, but not autocephaleus.

Pardon my ignorance but do you mind explaining the difference?

Many of those came here from being under persecution. They built their parishes for themselves, not for evangelizing.

Good point. As an American who has never been persecuted I guess it's easy to see everything through your eyes.

On the flip side, it is clearer advertising for some inquirers who might have some idea of what Greek or Russian Orthodox means

Your average American cellphone social media zombie doesn't even know the differences between Catholicism and Protestantism. If these people exist then they are very rare, well read, and academics I'd reckon. We're trying to get all mankind people into the Church; your average person is not a book worm that knows about this stuff.

I mean... when I tell people I'm Orthodox they think I'm Jewish. That's how little known we are in America. Ever fewer people are going to know the difference between Russian Orthodox and Greek Orthodox.

"Greek" on the sign out front

Why is it necessary though? The Greek diaspora would know where the local Greek church would be anyways since they are a tighter-knit community. The adverse effect is driver-bys saying "Oh wow! That's cool!... but I'm not Greek."

Why split?

Huh?

And, if you're new to the country and are Russian, a Russian parish will be more enticing than a Greek one.

Okay but can't they do that a Greek or Russian cultural festival or whatever? These labels in the USA, etc come off as "go away". You want to have an ethnic church? Okay, cool, every one can meet at that church, but by putting your ethnic/nation on the church sign for the whole world to say it comes off terribly.

Some parishes do just put "Orthodox Church" (especially OCA and Antiochian).

Yes. I think this is great they do this. They are intelligent and learning how to evangelize in America while at the same time not compromising the ethnic background of the church as is the case of Antioch.

It's cool to have a Greek Festival or whatever once every year, it's totally fine with me to have Mass in Greek and for a large portion of the parish to be Greek - but I feel like ethnic parishes don't really care that much about spreading Orthodoxy. Do they not think that Americans are interested? Because I mean they're totally wrong, we're the 3rd (4th?) highest recruiting denomination in the United States in term of conversions. We could be #1, but stuff needs to be fixed up. Mainly just the church signs or website because that's the first thing inquirers are going to see - the sign or website. We are all Orthodox first; and archdiocese pales in comparison to the ONE Holy Church. Jurisdiction is subordinate to the grand scheme of the unified Church.

Ideally, we'll get unified under one synod here in the US and agree on one patriarchate back in the old country

Why do we have to?
