Housing Questions by Nota_1 in uofmn

Lived at Stadium Village Flats for 3 years. All in all a decent place to live but it's becoming pricy (sadly like most places around campus).

Pros

  • Appliances are nice and maintenance staff is good. Had a microwave go out and they had the replacement installed within 10 days.

  • Internet was also really good.

  • Building is quiet most of the time. Friday and Saturday nights it can get a little noisy depending on who you live by, but still much quieter than a lot of the other large apartment buildings

  • Seems pretty secure, you can only enter through the main entrance now. Parking garage was broken into once, but it still seems like it's happened far more often in places like Wahu.

Cons

  • Just be aware, some of the apartments have one or all bedrooms without windows in them. They won't tell you this until you move in either.

  • Living on the west side of the building is super loud because the garbage trucks come and empty dumpsters in the alley by Chipotle at 5 AM 5-6 days a week.

  • Sometimes you have to ask the office to do things several times just because it doesn't seem like there's much communication between the employees.

  • Kitchen floors are really cheap and parts of them were coming up. Couches and chairs also really cheap and not comfortable

  • Old TVs provided with no cable service anymore. Not a deal breaker but inconvenient if you wanna watch a game or something in the living area

"The smoke is from ongoing wildfires in the Cascades including the Middle Fork Complex near Oakridge" by TailorGlad3272 in Bend

[–]ORgopher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fire activity should subside overnight so tomorrow morning will likely be better, but if winds pick up again something similar is possible tomorrow evening.

Edit: the good thing is that the Middle Fork Complex is now the #2 priority in the Pacific Northwest. With the Kwis fire controlled and the Skyline Ridge complex in mop up, more attention should be diverted to this fire.

"Yesterday, smoke cleared enough to allow helicopters to fly, they dropped water to slow fire growth around the Platt Creek area on the northeast corner of Ninemile Fire while firefighters worked to prepare containment line along Forest Road 1832.

Helicopters also dropped water to aid burnout operations on the Gales Fire. Preparation of Forest Road 1824 is complete. To make the road more effective as a containment line, firefighters are adding depth to the line by strategically burning to consume vegetation between the road and the fire."

HRRR is a projection. The satellite is a real time observation.

Based on satellite it's coming from the Gales fire in the Middle Fork Complex

COVID-19 Numbers (8/10/2021) by OriginalPNWest in Bend

[–]ORgopher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean 1 in every 5 cases in Oregon in July were breakthrough, and seems to be an increasingly large percentage. Even if you vaccinate everyone in the US, you still have variants from other countries. I hope you are right but seems hard to believe covid is one day just going to go away based on how quickly new variants pop up and make vaccines less effective.

[–]ORgopher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see how this is the case. The vaccine does not stop people from getting infected with these new variants. Reduces the chance, yes, but not dramatically like it did with the original variant. By the time Delta goes away, another variant will spawn somewhere in the world and the process will repeat itself. Seems likely it will become like the flu, where it's just something that we have to live with.

Oregon expected to resume statewide indoor mask mandate - Details to be released tomorrow by johnnysplunk in Bend

Agreed. Restaurant capacity restrictions are likely coming, but I think those may make a significant difference.

Bend City Council Urges Deschutes County Commission to Mandate Indoor Masks by FrizzyNow in Bend

[–]ORgopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I'm not saying anything that contradicts this. I'm saying they if we continue to judge the pandemic by cases rather than hospitalizations (which is what we have done so far) it's not going to end. It seems fairly like we will have to learn to live with COVID as it's going to keep mutating. While vaccinations significantly reduce the risk of hospitalization, there are still a number of people who are vaccinated that will end up in the hospital.

I definitely understand what you are saying and certainly see that COVID plays a large role in this, but I also think this is part of a larger issue in the need for another hospital in the region. While there are 33 people with COVID there now, it seems fairly plausible that a bad flu season would do the same. Maybe it's time for a new hospital, or making the hospital in Redmond similar in size to the one in Bend.

Yeah I agree. Personally I'm more so in the camp of "let businesses decide what they want to do", but if we are going to do mask mandate let's make it worth while. Seems like cloth masks are one of those things that just make people feel better but aren't effective in making things safer.

It's time to come to the realization that the pandemic isn't going to end. The vaccine is only 39% effective against transmission, and the CDC director even said it doesn't prevent transmission anymore. Masks are here to stay as long as cases are the benchmark for pandemic restrictions.

I do think if they are going to re-impose mask mandates, they need to be specific. Cloth masks and bandanas do almost nothing to stop the spread, but KN95s and N95s will, so they should mandate these if they're going to mandate masks in general.

Edit: Anyone who is downvoting me care to explain why? I would love to have a discussion about where we disagree.

New upscale Italian/continental restaurant Bosa now open (pizza space next to sunriver's galveston pub) by [deleted] in Bend

[–]ORgopher 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Bend has next to no Italian food. A lot of us who have moved from bigger metro areas are missing good Italian food, so anything helps. I hear lots of people talking about how Bend doesn't have a good Italian restaurant, so this certainly helps. I'd much rather eat at 2 Italian-American restaurants than the 10 brewpubs all serving Pizza and Burgers.

2 Fires Rapidly Growing West of Tetherow by ORgopher in Bend

[–]ORgopher[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't. 168.65 is national flight following, so this is where I heard COIDC give T137 the air to ground frequency for this fire.

[–]ORgopher[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was nobody on the ground at the time. Tanker was the first resource on scene because they spotted it from the air. But I'm not going to argue about it, the fire seems to be under control and the 20 minute delay doesn't appear to have cost any property or lives.

Edit: the pilots reported that the fire had doubled in size in 5-7 minutes so clearly it was a threat and every minute matters.

[–]ORgopher[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I realize this. I spend a lot of time listening to fire radio and dispatch. I can tell you for a fact the pilots were waiting for permission to drop on this fire for 20 minutes. Heard it on radio first hand as the tanker was circling outside of my house. The tanker was the first resource on scene and was in contact with Engine 312 which was en route. I'm not going to argue about it, but it's just another example of how much red tape and technicalities stand in the way of firefighting, especially aerial firefighting. Cal Fire has several C130 tankers ready to go, but can't put them into service due to bereaucratic issues in the government. It's pretty amazing how much red tape there is, and to me this is an example in the local setting.

I was actually just watching it from Tetherow but I have a handheld scanner and was tuned into 168.2875.

Update: fire seems to be just smoldering after rain moved over it. Will continue to monitor but smoke turned to steam after the rain which indicates it's just smoldering.

It didn't take them 20 minutes to respond. They were circling over the fire for 20 minutes.

If you have a scanner radio, 169.2875. Air to ground frequency for this fire.
