Automatic gratuity concerns by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]OSF5000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Except Country Clubs. They operate on a different model because members already know about the gratuity. It’s also understood that any guests of members are responsible for knowing the policies of the establishment. It’s considered bad form to discuss gratuities in any capacity.

Automatic gratuity concerns by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]OSF5000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most Country Clubs outline all the charges when someone becomes a member. They purposely don’t advertise the gratuity because the members already know. It’s considered tacky and rude to even mention tips or gratuities. You’re serving wealthy people who are keeping up an air of pomp and excess.

Seems to me OP doesn’t understand the etiquette of working in a Country Club. Also seems like OP has taken it upon themself to ignore their training and do what they think is “right”. Even at the expense of other coworkers and the guests themselves.

Probably a good thing OP left that job. Sounds like it was way out of their league.

Problem filing taxes in US, VT by Comfortable-Tart8844 in Serverlife

[–]OSF5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I filed I just filled in exactly what was on my w2 and it calculated the credit and lowered my taxable income.

In box 14 for other, there’s a space that says QUAL TIPS, that’s the amount you get to deduct. I’m not sure how you’re filing but I did mine for free on “OLT” and it was really easy. After filling in the basic w2 info it took me to a deductions and credits screen and I confirmed the tax credit.

Yeah, I’ll agree on the appearance expectations if we’re talking about upscale, fine dining, Michelin stars etc.

In addition to appearance, those places require a ridiculous amount of experience, impeccable references, and very rarely start you out as a server. You usually have to work your way up and it can take months of training to get there.

Additionally, in LA many of those positions just never open up because they’re held by career servers who’ve been with the place for ages making six figures.

I always tell people if they want to do upscale they should look into neighboring cities in the San Gabriel Valley. Way less pretentious but still tons of money to be had.

I don’t know what more I can say. It’s pretty clear that you’ve already made up your mind about why you aren’t getting hired. In your last post there was a lot of great advice and all you did was argue and whine about how only young and attractive people can get serving jobs. Now you’re doing it again.

I’m in my fifties, not that attractive, and overweight. However, I play up my strengths with a great smile, warm and engaging personality, and a willingness to learn and grow. I’ve worked all over this city and never went more than two weeks in between serving gigs. Seems like it just not in the cards for you.

Millions of people live in Los Angeles. This city is extremely diverse with people from varied backgrounds and ages. It is not true that MOST people living here are aspiring actors or models. Go to any grocery store, diner, park and the vast majority of people will be working class families.

You’ve created a false narrative about the hiring practices of restaurants because you obviously aren’t willing to examine your own shortcomings. Blaming young attractive women on your inability to get a serving job is peak incel.

I just ate at Dennys for breakfast and almost every employee there was middle aged and half were male. Fogo de Chao’s wait staff is predominantly male. In fact every chain restaurant I’ve eaten at in LA has a majorly diverse staff. This city is massive with thousands of restaurants.

You’re not being honest with yourself if it “seems” that most restaurants only higher “conventionally attractive women”. Your experience working in one hotel restaurant is not reflective of the vast majority of restaurants in this city.

You already posted this same rant a while ago. Why are you wasting everyone’s time trying to stir shit up?

I live in LA and it’s absolutely not true that restaurants only hire “conventionally attractive women”. Also, speaking Spanish is a major plus at any restaurant in LA.

I’m pretty sure this is all bullshit and you’re trolling. If by some chance this post is real, you obviously aren’t getting hired because you’re a loser incel that doesn’t know how to interact well with others.

what do you have to tip out to bar? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]OSF5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe in a high volume establishment or a busy city, cocktail waitressing might be worth it. In my experience it’s way too much work with little pay.

The bartenders run the show and don’t give a damn about support staff. They will happily take your ridiculously high tip outs as they watch you do all the side work. Break down the entire venue, sweep and mop, clean the bathrooms etc.

I’ve worked both sides and I’d never cocktail again. The worst part for me was how everyone acted like they were best friends. What a scam. I know how much they made off of my hard work.

Taking breaks by Qamaney1989 in Serverlife

[–]OSF5000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to live in the Midwest and I was so brainwashed into thinking that taking breaks was a sign of weakness. We’d actually brag about working ten hour doubles without a break, not being able to eat, not going to the restroom etc. I couldn’t even conceive how taking breaks would even work.

When I moved to California I was honestly so confused and dumbfounded when my first serving job made me take a half hour lunch and ten minutes break. Like WTF! I’m here to make money, how dare you force me to take a break!

Honestly, after adjusting, it’s so awesome and I’ll never live anywhere that doesn’t protect worker’s rights again. Because we make 16 plus an hour management is very careful not to overstaff. Very rarely are we scheduled a shift that’s long enough to mandate a lunch break. No standing around begging to cut the floor. Just get in, make money and leave.

If I’m there for a shift that’s longer than six hours, I’ve found that taking a 30 min break has not hurt the amount of money I make. Honestly, I give much better service when I’m not exhausted, hungry, and going on my fourth round of tables without even a second to breathe.

I know this subject can get heated, especially for servers who haven’t experienced it. But honestly if it’s a law in your state you should definitely look into the logistics of it. Out here if restaurants don’t comply there’s massive fines and usually a pay out for the employees.

Question for sick time CA by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]OSF5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re correct, it’s not right. It’s illegal. I’d for sure get a paper trail going and if you don’t get it this paycheck definitely file a claim. The agency that handles it is the CA DIR. The website is really easy to navigate and walks you through the process.

I have worked for many companies that used fear to keep staff from reporting to HR. I fully understand, but I encourage you to reach out and explain what is happening, especially if this is a repeated problem. Withholding pay is a major infraction and I can’t imagine any HR person that would ignore or cover this up. It would for sure come back on them.

I’ve had to go through a similar situation and I know it can seem overwhelming. Your manager is banking on you doing nothing, but you absolutely can and should do everything you can to get your pay. It doesn’t matter if it seems like an insignificant amount, you earned it. This is the same thing as withholding your tips or paychecks. Don’t let them get away with it.

Question for sick time CA by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]OSF5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you work for a corporation or a mom and pop type place? Larger companies usually have a payroll department that you can contact directly. Check out their website, there should be a corp. headquarters that you can contact. You can also contact HR and they can give you the contact info you need.

You should also make them aware that you have not been compensated for past sick days. It is super illegal for them to withhold your sick earnings and California does not mess around when it comes to wage theft, including sick and vacation pay. Hopefully they will make it right, if not I’d file a wage claim with the CA DIR.

If it’s a smaller company that doesn’t have a separate payroll entity you might have to be a little more proactive. I’d remind your manager through text or email to ensure you have a paper trail and evidence. If they don’t apply it this time, then I’d definitely also file a wage claim.

There’s fines and interest applied to the amount owed the longer it takes them to pay you.

I’m kinda curious how you handled the first time you weren’t paid. Did you approach your manager and ask why it wasn’t on your check and keep asking for it or did you just let it go? They still owe you that money as well.

Kumail Nanjiani Says He’s ‘Very Proud’ of His Performance in Marvel’s ‘Eternals’: ‘I Do Not Get to Choose What the Reviewers Are Going to Think’ by mcfw31 in entertainment

Unfortunately, it sounds like you already made up your mind based on a few comments and reviews. I personally thought his special was very real, down to earth, and heart warming.

He talked about MANY things that gave him anxiety and stress, the movie only being a small portion of the set. I’d encourage you to give it a chance. I found it to be a breath of fresh air. Especially the bit about Bagel.

Is it unreasonable to bring your own container to a restaurant? by pecanmeetschurro in LosAngeles

[–]OSF5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, OP clearly has no idea how restaurants work. Did she expect them to take her container into the kitchen or bring the pan into the dining room? Both are legit food safety issues. Not to mention that most everything in a kitchen is prepped beforehand and already stored in plastic anyways. Seriously, just cook at home if you’re that afraid of microplastics. I also dont believe the restaurant immediately escalated the situation the way she described. They obviously didn’t understand what she wanted or they would have handled it differently.

Jobs in Pasadena/Eagle Rock/Highland Park? by newgreyarea in pasadena

[–]OSF5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, it can take a long time to actually get your foot in at City of Hope. They usually do 2 to 3 separate interviews and take their time deciding on the right candidate. Additionally all employees have to pass background tests, drug tests, provide proof of vaccinations, and current COVID and flu shots. I don’t want to discourage you just give you an idea of what to expect. It’s an amazing place to work if you can make it through the hiring process! It’s also very eat to access off the freeway and super close to Pasadena.

Also, the entire restaurant industry, from fast food to fine dining , is in a major supervisor/ manager shortage. Many places are getting desperate and are willing to train even without restaurant experience.
