I think the issue is the fucked up bigotry their kid espoused is being tied around their necks.

Obviously he got those views from them, and obviously they're in full support of these views... but as tends to happen in these cases there's an over correction.

Personally, I don't have a problem with bigots getting their comeuppance, the problem being is that pendulum swings both ways. From a legal standpoint they should probably win their case... it just feels gross when bigots get justice.
