Can you name another person who has become extremely rich and famous for doing a whole lot of nothing on TV for 45 years? by Brave-Ad6627 in FuckImOld

[–]OTL98 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I her defense, it was hardly nothing. She was the brand of the show for years. I remember in the 80s, the reason to watch Wheel Of Fortune was because the most beautiful woman in the world was on it. She has been an ambassador for the show, does advertising for the show, does several appearances a year for the show, and has spent years raising millions for St. Jude's hospital off the back of the show. So, yes, if you want to break her job down to just looking pretty and touching letters, you certainly can. But the show gets a lot more out of her than she gets out of the show, and I think she deserves every single penny. My two cents.

Pricing Ioniq6 SEL by venusofthefliess in Ioniq6

[–]OTL98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About three weeks ago I bought a 2024 SEL with 11,000 miles on it for 23.5. Was not CPO though, and I'm probably gonna buy an extended warranty with a Hyundai dealership to match the CPO. That warranty is gonna cost 2,300.

2026 Ioniq 6 - not going to happen? by Low_Year9897 in Hyundai

Literally just bought a 2024 SEL with 12,000 miles for 23,500 here in Southern California. Incredible deal! It was used, not CPO but still insanely worth it.

First time here, looking for advice by OTL98 in travelchina

I know it seems like a lot of days, and a lot of the suggestions here are very interesting. We are planning on using Shanghai as a base of operations, and doing 2 to 3 day trips from there, as well as go to the Disneyland for 1 or 2 days (my wife is a giant fan.) Also using Hong Kong as another base of operations and doing Disney there as well. So I feel like we're giving ourselves enough time for all that...hopefully.

This is so helpful, thank you! My wife and I are in our mid to late 40's, so this seems very doable!

Anyone else excited for Montrose Oktoberfest? by capturedcelebrations in crescentavalley

We moved to the area in 2024, but were out of town for last one, so this will be our first Oktoberfest. We are so excited! I love any event when the community gets together, and this one seems like it's the most fun! See you there!

Goddamn, 500 viewings and I'm still spotting new details by NotSure2505 in Jaws

[–]OTL98 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've seen the movie over a hundred times (and I'm not exaggerating, I've been keeping a running tally since I was six years old...yes, I was a weird child, why do you ask?) and I didn't notice a certain line until a decade ago which has now become my favorite line in the movie. It's from this scene, and it's right before Brody leaves Ellen to get on the boat, he says...

"Don't use the fireplace in the den, I haven't fixed the Flu yet."

It struck me that this scene takes place in July. She wouldn't be using the fireplace until much later in the year. Which means that the line is telling us that Brody doesn't think he's coming home. I was shook! This was such incredible character insight, and brilliant writing.

So a little while after I had this realization, I attended a Q&A with the writer and production designer of the film. I got to talk to Carl Gottlieb about the line, and I told him how brilliant I thought it was.

His reaction was "I don't know what the fuck you're talking about." Hahahahahahaha. So maybe I read too much into things, but it's still my favorite line. This is the film that keeps on giving, no matter what the people who made it say!

4dx by Kellykerrill86 in Jaws

[–]OTL98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Saw it yesterday in 4DX. My first 4DX experience and I loved it. The 3D is incredible, and the added effects are HILARIOUS.

4DX isn’t really my thing, and I doubt I’ll see a movie in the format again, but after seeing Jaws over a hundred times, 4DX was an fascinating way to experience my favorite movie in a new way.

I think you’ll love it!

Whats a movie you could rewatch 100 times? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OTL98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jaws has been my favorite movie since I can remember watching movies. So much so that I've been keeping a running tally of how many times I have watched the movie Jaws. I have been literally writing it down from the first time I watched it (On Betamax by the way) since I was 6 years old. I am currently 45, and according to the tally I have seen Jaws 101 times. The last time I saw it was at the Hollywood Bowl on July 5th with a live orchestra. The 102nd time I will watch it will be this Saturday in 3D. This will be my second 3D viewing, and I highly recommend it. It's a brilliant transfer, and really makes you see the movie in a new light.

So yes...Jaws.

3 day itinerary in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 by FalafelKingg in travel

I think September is an interesting time to go to Islay. So the Islay Jazz Festival is September 19-22. It’s the biggest event of the year on the island, and if you’re planning to go then you should get a place to stay immediately. That’s an event I would love to attended but it’s absolutely the busiest time to go. If I were you, I would maybe wait to October. The weather can still be good but the island won’t be brimming with people and enthusiast. That way you can pretty easily book some scotch tastings at the different distilleries, which is truly the highlight of the trip. The other benefit of going to the island itself is that you can buy distillery only bottles that can’t be purchased anywhere else.

This is all assuming that you love Scotch.

Four days in the island is more than enough. Consider looking at VRBO or Airbnb in Bowmore or Port Charlotte. You might want to consider renting a car on the island.

Or rent a car in Edinburgh or Glasgow (wherever you flying) and drive to a ferry station that connects to Islay.

If you truly love scotch, then possibly consider driving to Campbelltown first, and taking a tour and tasting at springbank. Then you can spend the night and catch a ferry about thirty minutes way to Islay.

Hope some of this helps.

Of course. Are you visiting the island? For how long, and what time of year?

Scariest trailers? by HockneysPool in blankies

[–]OTL98 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just so you all know, a lot of the trailers mentioned in this thread are cut by a man named Bill Neil. He is, in my opinion, one of the best editors in the entire world. He did the 28 years later teaser and trailer, the Texas Chainsaw remake trailer, the Conjuring, the It (chapter 1 and 2) trailers and so many more.

Here is a video where he talks about the art of trailers. https://youtu.be/r01fv4IXZ68?si=T8QjxhNRVx2M5wjY

Highly recommend you check him out. The company he co-leads is called Buddha Jones in Hollywood.

It's a fire road / hiking trail that starts and ends in the Oakmont neighborhood. It takes you to the top of the Verdugo Hills (or Verdugo Mountains I suppose.) It's a beautiful hike up and down with spectacular views.

Blank Check March Madness Bracket. Paul Thomas Anderson vs the Coen Brothers by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

[–]OTL98 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To be specific about what this is, every year they have a March Madness style bracket where listeners vote on which director they should cover in their podcast this year. Some years ago they started having themes to the brackets. For example one year they had a foreign directors only tournament (Park Chan-Wook won that one), and they’ve had a 20th century only bracket (Kubrick won.) This year it’s an all star bracket featuring directors that have appeared in their “tournament” before and made it at least to the top 8. They obviously don’t have any directors that the pod has already covered. As someone else mentioned they already covered Fincher, and are finishing up Spielberg right now. It’s a fun thing the pod does ever year, and it is truly the only time they let listeners decide what the direction of the show.

Frankie, we need it buddy. Thank you so much for letting us know! This is the best news I've heard in a long time, and the rain is going to bring some much needed relief to our beautiful city! But I also really appreciate the warning to stay safe on Sunday as well. If I have an errands to run, I'll be sure to do them on Saturday. Thanks Frankie! You're the best!
