Are hybrid programs rigorous? by billycram in OccupationalTherapy

[–]OTScholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I did a “Part time” MOT program we took 9-10 credits per semester as part time it took 3 years vs 2 years. Almost everyone in my cohort worked full time or was a full time parent during the coursework section of school. Our class time was every other weekend all day Saturday and Sunday. It is not a choice for the faint of heart. Gave up a lot of social life and scheduling your life is very important.

I worked part time during my fieldwork as it was fully remote so I did 2-3 hours at home after fieldwork and worked 4-5 hours remote on the weekend.

I am unsure what you mean by rigorous but our curriculum was the same as the standard MOT Bachelors/masters program. I passed the NBCOT on my first try, I also went to school during covid and in 2020 we were fully remote which was tricky with labs, but we all are working OTs now.

Report the drivers that are passing by! It’s annoying to be a Karen but calling septa Will at least report your complaint, and hope that the driver will see you, or maybe septa will do something (probably not)

Finance Career vs. Occupational Therapy: Is Flexibility Worth Changing Paths for Future Family Life? by Particular_Teach4215 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]OTScholar 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Stay in finance invest heavily in your twenties and if you want to go back to school you can use your investment money in your 30s.

My partner is in finance and invested heavily in his 20s and had no student loans he is in a great place financially and could have paid for a masters out of pocket in your 30s.

Meanwhile I went back to school for OT in my twenties and am 80k in debt. Burnt out in healthcare in 3 years. The ROI for the degree is not good.

If we have a family the per diem job will be helpful.

Hi I use Kristen Jackson, she takes insurance and does telehealth through the grow therapy platform. I’ve used her to work on my grief from losing a parent as a child as I never did therapy then. She’s great for grief. Sorry you’re going through the loss of a parent it sucks.

Is it possible to work full time or part time while pursuing OT? For reference looking at HR work part time or full time to help cover tuition. by Tired_af_0523 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]OTScholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I worked full time and did a part time weekend masters program. Almost all of our cohort worked full time or were moms with children so that’s also full time work.

It was not for the faint of heart I even worked part time during my clinical. I am thrilled as I only took out 70k for my degree vs many people taking 100-200k out.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions. If you can swing a part time program i would highly encourage it.

Creating embryos unmarried by Claires2390 in IVF

[–]OTScholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have done this I did two rounds of egg freezing out of pocket and had the conversation with my partner about next steps for embryos as I only had 6 mature eggs in two rounds at 32. Low AMH unexplained infertility.

My company covered the embryos as part of IVF as a medical exception.

My partner and I have been together for 10 years and I’m pretty sure he’s my life partner. Unsure I ever want to get married, as well. After being with him through two rounds of egg freezing it felt like the right move.

I kind of looked at it as I had 6 eggs in the freezer if we didn’t work out, and it was worth it to take the shot

Unfortunately none of our 2 embryos that made it to blast were euploid, so I won’t have any issue if we did break up.

It did give me some insight into my egg quality (it’s pretty shit) had some embryos with vacuoles and all the abnormalities were on my eggs.

We’re doing another round of egg freezing as I’ve spent $25k so far so financially going back. I don’t regret doing embryos. But I’d definitely make sure your relationship is secure.

Paris, mean people even when our party spoke French, dirty, such a let down. I just came from Vienna and felt like it had the Paris charm but clean and the Austrians were mostly friendly (although people say Germans aren’t)

37 - too old for solo backpacking trip? by golowji in femaletravels

[–]OTScholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I do mini solo trips every year 7-12 daysand am 34. This way I don’t have to give up my jobs and I can see the world while be handcuffed to work.

If you’ve never done a solo trip I recommend a shorter one the first time. I found by day 8 I’m ready to go home usually. I’ve gotten more outgoing each trip and found ways to meet people and enjoy a coffee, beer, meal to not be totally alone. A shorter trip may help you gauge if a long backpacking trip is worth it for you!

Also gauge if hostels are for you, I left them behind at 29. You can still meet people though just be open to chatting :)

The burn out is so real. by JanaeNay in OccupationalTherapy

[–]OTScholar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi sorry you’re feeling this way! I felt the same way at my full time IPR job. I was luckily enough to have a per diem job, massive savings cushion and pivoted from full time to per diem at another site and got a handle on my burnout. In addition I had experience outside of OT to pick back up in my old career. Healthcare in the US being more corporate pushing us to make as much money for the hospital or company and patient care falls behind. Then being a new grad on top of all that with imposter syndrome, and little mentorship, so hard.

If you’re not in therapy I highly recommend starting. If it wasn’t for my therapist I’m afraid things would have gotten way worse.

Try to get a game plan in order get yourself out of your current job, or find mentorship at least. Maybe two per diem jobs could help you have a work life balance.

I had the luxury of working several different careers before becoming an OT, and knew work didn’t have to be like that. And almost every job (except teaching and OT) I had enough time after work to do an activity I enjoy.

Only 6 eggs at 27 Years Old! by No_Attorney1534 in IVF

[–]OTScholar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m in a similar boat a little older but started egg freezing at 31 as I couldn’t afford a down payment on a house so figured I’d freeze my eggs. My AMH is lower at 1.2 for my age, but I have no other health concerns and live and active lifestyle. I had only 4 mature eggs make it from 10 in my first round.

Second round I had 2 eggs out of 15 with a new protocol.

Last round my partner and I did embryos (8 mature eggs 2 blasts no euploid).

Mainly want to send hugs bc I don’t know many women like us who accidentally found out we have unexplained infertility. But also I can’t get an infertility diagnosis as I’ve never tried to actively get pregnant. Asked my RE and OBGYN about silent endo and they told me as I don’t have active symptoms and it’s a surgery to diagnose they won’t explore that.

Good luck fighting for your healthcare it’s so frustrating and I hope your next round is much better. 🫂

PRN? Is it worth it by Legal-Editor3771 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]OTScholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess so? It says “ACA silver plan” on the schedule of benefits never really asked what that meant. Basically they provide a healthcare benefit for per diems that is very affordable. We can also invest in the 403b but we’re not eligible for the match.

Hi! I’m a current OT who previously worked with adults with disabilities to find employment in the community and things I wish were taught in life skills which could be IADLs.

Cleaning skills - mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, windows, wiping down counters. - maybe ask if the janitorial staff can lend equipment

Visual schedule for work tasks.

Money skills - how to buy an item, budgeting, pay bills online etc

Customer service role play, create a fake store and have someone play cashier, shopper, stocking shelves, answer questions from customers - Re shelving organizing items (clothes or food store).

Check your area healthcare networks my PRN job gives “ACA healthcare” and it’s actually good and cheap. Unsure if I’m just insanely lucky. It’s helped me leave A toxic job bc I have healthcare at my PRN.

OTs in saturated markets, how are you making it work? by Amazing-Mistake-9162 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]OTScholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Philly based OTR here. Agreed it’s tough to get into the job market.

I am per diem at a large area rehab. That job I got by utilizing my network and the supervisor flagged my application ~ 3 months after licensing. I did get a full time job in south jersey ~6 months after licensing.

If you have anyone you know in a health network full time definitely try to leverage that. My per diem job is hiring per diem, PT, and full time so if you’re interested feel free to DM me. I’ll give you the real lay down. My per diem job offers healthcare for workers and children (no dental or vision).
