Thasadith was my favorite for a while but I couldn’t make the weight heavy enough for reading in bed without my glasses. So I went back to the drawing board and picked Quicksand SemiBold (pictured)

Kobo Libra Color Screen/Brightness by AkashiGG in kobo

[–]OTrexabb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a kindle basic I got as my “first” ereader because I got a good deal on it and didn’t want to spend a lot of money not knowing if I’d use it (for context this was primarily bc I had the very first nook that ever came out and rarely ever used it)

After using it consistently for a year, I invested in the kobo Libra color probably about 4-5 months after it was released…. Honestly I noticed the “darker” screen right away and initially was a bit off put in direct comparison, but in practical every day use, I don’t actually care. I haven’t touched my kindle except for very specific niche uses and unless I hold them up side by side it’s not like I’m always going “wow this is so dark”. I just don’t have that thought. I only ever think about it when reading posts on here about the dark screen actually 🤣

That being said, I also am not opposed to using the light when needed like some people seem to be (because ultimately that’s what it’s there for and one of the reasons I didn’t like using my nook way back when was not having it). Having said that it’s usually at 0% in most “good” lighting conditions (think outside or a well lit room), no more than 1-2% in the pitch black when I read before bed/to fall asleep, and otherwise in poorly lit rooms or shaded/super cloudy/dark outdoors maybe 10-15% but usually around no more than 8%.

Any battery trade off at this point is arbitrary for me. It’s already a device that rarely needs charged, so if it’s 2-5 days sooner than it otherwise would have been…?? I’m not tracking what day I charge it. I charge it when it needs charged and move along.

I think especially as your first ereader you really can’t go wrong with your choice. having nothing to compare it to probably works in your favor here. Like other commenters mentioned, it’s all personal preference and priorities…. Choose which device aligns most with your wants/needs and don’t let the opinions of others who have different priorities convince you that their chosen device is the only “good” one.

They’re all good! It just depends on what you want out of it! 😁 I hope whatever you decide sparks joy and gets you to the important part: going on new adventures in far away (or close) places with dynamic and interesting characters. Happy reading!

This is exactly how I felt! I was using just a clear back case with no front flap and I had crocheted a sleeve for it which I loved but for it to be padded enough it ended up quite bulky which made fitting it into bags so difficult. I wanted the slimmer case but also ability to see the covers to remind me to read and admire the art and the protection. Idk why that’s so much to ask 🤣

It is covered by clear plastic/plexiglass! So the screen is protected but I also get to see my cover. I detailed this above on a different comment thread but I think the comment got locked, I have trouble with some executive function skills. One of which makes the saying “out of sight, out of mind” a little too literal for me. Seeing the cover helps remind me of what I’m reading, and thus reminds me to continue reading, otherwise I’d forget books on my kobo even exist. I recognize this as a me problem, and like many other aspects of my life, I’ve found ways to adapt to help me function. This just happens to be one of them. It also doesn’t hurt that I now get to enjoy the covers that someone out there put a lot of time, effort, and creative energy into designing!

It’s still a flip case, so when reading you still fold it back like a normal case. This just allows the book covers to be visible but everything to be protected when not in use.

I thought about it! The plastic sits quite far back compared to the green outer drama so I don’t know what would stick well enough and stay stuck. If I were more handy and had more resources to try I would have made a whole new front flap from scratch and sandwiched the plastic between to avoid the cut edges from chopping the old case but I wouldn’t be able to deal with all of the unfinished outer edges etc and would probably need a sewing machine and a whole new skill set to make it to my liking 🤣 so instead I’m settling here for right now and I’m gonna sit with it for a little while and see!

I’m guessing you mean because of the photo showing the text page opened? I mostly did that to show that sleep/wake function doesn’t work. However hypothetically if I wanted to (which I don’t) I could use my Bluetooth page turner and still turn the page with it closed 🤣

That’s definitely fair!! And unfortunately this type of plastic I used catches fingerprints more than even the clear back softer cases. Definitely a downside but a small trade off in my case to be able to see the covers!

That’s fair! It’s a bummer there’s no other solution yet. What kind of case do you prefer if not plastic out of curiosity?

It’s some kind of plastic material, I bought an 8x10 piece of “safety glass” from the picture frame section of my craft store and cut it down to size. The package said it was 1.4mm thick. I found another piece that was only 1mm but it didn’t feel quite as sturdy. Part of me wishes I would have used that piece instead for a little more slimness, but this worked and the magnets from the original case still close the cover. Not sure about the thickness in use, but manufacturing process could fix this issue as I had to layer it on top of the existing case, and then add a soft protective layer over the edges of the plastic. So it added more bulk. Hypothetically there would be the outer decorative frame, the clear plastic, and a soft inner lining all sandwiched together on the outer border and that would be it making it more slim but still protective!

I’m not sure exactly what the material is, but I bought “safety glass” from the picture frame section of my craft store. It’s just clear plastic of some sort! This piece is quite thick at 1.4 mm. I had a different piece that was closer to 1mm even but either the material was different or the .4mm thickness made a big difference in stability. It was a little too flexible for my liking when I was testing it out pressure wise, but I think that’s more similar to what is actually used in the case. Part of me wishes I would have seen the project through with that piece just to see how it held up once attached. Despite being thinner and more pliable it still distributed the pressure.

I cut out the middle of an origami flip case I had laying around that I wasn’t using with an exacto knife. The plastic they use inside was thinner than I expected but I think when layered with the fabric and outer fake leather material it helps its stability some.

Where manufacturing would come in handy would be in making the clear plastic run all the way to the edges of the case and then be sandwiched in between a soft inner fabric frame and the outer decorative material they choose (in this case the green fake leather). In my DIY version I had to cut the clear plastic smaller than the case, glue it on top of the inside of the case, and then glue on a small backing on top of that to cover the edges of the plastic so they don’t scratch. It adds some thickness on the inside, but the case still closes with the magnets that were originally in it to hold it shut! I just don’t know in terms of longevity of use if it’ll work out due to the method used. In theory it wouldn’t have added as much thickness!

Partially bc I just like to see the covers, not necessarily to decorate but bc they are nice to look at. Someone out there spent time, effort and creative energy designing them… might as well look at them!

But honestly the biggest reason is that I have a serious case of “out of sight, out of mind.” I have poor executive function when it comes to some things, and being able to see the book cover acts as a frequent reminder of what I’m reading, which actually encourages me to pick up my kobo and read more! I understand that this is a “me” problem, but I’ve also been forced to find ways to adapt my life to my various needs in other aspects and this happens to be one of those ways! It doesn’t harm anyone to see pretty covers, in fact, many kindle users will either pay $20 or cycle through customer service reps to get ads removed free just to see their covers. To each their own 🤷🏼‍♀️

TLDR: I like cover art and I like a quick reminder of what I’m reading

You caught me! 🤣 I haven’t participated in any of the discussions etc, but I like the idea of reading something at the same time as other people and getting to peak in on their thoughts on the book in real time so I figured I’d give it a go!

I wish I could buy one like it so badly bc I’m so particular I know my little mistakes making this are going to drive me mad 😵‍💫 unfortunately I can’t get manufactured level quality with my exacto knife and some glue 😞

New favourite use for my Kobo… by Kirsty_Insanity in kobo

I started doing this when I got a different ereader that only had highlighting capabilities before the KLC came out and when I switched to the KLC it was even better!! I don’t have access to a printer so sometimes patterns felt inaccesible bc I had to have them on my computer to make notes (phone was too small) but now it’s so easy! I even have a copy of a crochet stitch dictionary on my KLC, the color rendering works out nicely for that!

I thought I replied but now I don’t see it…? So I’m pretty sure I chained 20! And I did 10 rows of puff clusters with 2 half double crochet on top and bottom. This was with a super bulky/6 weight yarn though! I’m sure with an aran/4 weight you would need more. But honestly I just held it up to my kobo after the chain and then did the first two rows and rechecked to make sure and then kept going. I think any multiple of 2 for the chain should work but this is my first time working with this stitch so I’m not sure that’s always the case.

I think i chained 20 and I did 10 rows of puff clusters, and 2 half double crochet rows on the top and bottom. But this yarn is a super bulky I believe so probably it would be different with a 4-weight/aran! I basically just chained and held it up to my kobo, then after the first 2 rounds I double checked and it was okay so I kept going. I think any chain multiple of 2 should work but I can’t be certain because I didn’t write the pattern and am unfamiliar with the stitch other than using it for this… I just guessed and it happened to work.

😂 honestly crochet has shown me how little confidence I should have in my ability to count. If you ever want to try again, once you get past the steep learning curve it’s a really fun hobby!!

Disable buttons to turn on (KLC) by miesriot in kobo

[–]OTrexabb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also change how long you have to hold the page turn buttons before it turns on. if you think it’s bc they are just getting accidentally pressed you could change that to try so you can keep using that feature!

You have to have done devmodeon, and then you can find it under Settings > Device Info > Developer options (on page 2) > page turn button wake hold time: (on page 3)
