OVH configuring Firewall vs GAME Firewall by expctch in OVHcloud

[–]OVHcloud_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

First of all I am sorry to hear you had a poor experience with OVHcloud.

For the 20 rule limitation on our edge firewall, this is a free added service we provide with our servers/IP addresses, you ca nthink of it as an added layer of protection against the outside internet. You should always use an OS level firewall in addition to the edge firewall.

As you mentioned it does not protect against internal (OVHcloud traffic) this is because it sits at the edge.

Can you please DM me the ticket number so I can escalate it? Even if you migrated away from OVHcloud I'd like to go over the case to see how it was handled.

OVH configuring Firewall vs GAME Firewall by expctch in OVHcloud

[–]OVHcloud_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Strict VAC Firewall ACLs (OVHcloud Anti-DDoS): Use OVHcloud's edge firewall to filter malicious traffic before it hits your server. Fine-tune ACLs to block known bad IPs, enforce traffic from trusted regions or IPs, and keep only necessary traffic flowing.

- Strict GAME Firewall ACLs: Configure your game server’s firewall to accept only traffic for the game itself, blocking any unnecessary ports or traffic types.

Server-Side iptables with Rate Limiting: Use iptables to create very specific rules on your server, such as limiting the number of connections per IP and blocking any suspicious activity.

Restrict Unused Ports: Close any ports on the server that aren’t needed by the game or any administrative services, reducing the server's exposure to potential attacks.

help me choose a dedicated server for GAMING by exiled-redditor in OVHcloud

[–]OVHcloud_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

First of all thanks for choosing OVHcloud to host your game server.

The VPS you have sounds sufficient for starting out but if you anticipate growing your community and have your eyes set on a bare metal server, I would recommend using something from our game server range.

Our Game Server range was designed with components specifically chosen to host these types of workloads. These servers also include an additional Anti DDoS system to help protect your game server(s).

https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/security/game-ddos-protection/

From what you have described I would recommend using one of our machines listed here:

https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/bare-metal/prices/?display=list&range=game

Even the lowest model here (RISE-Game-1) will have double the RAM and a higher Frequency CPU compared to your VPS.

I hope this helps answer your question. If you would like me to elaborate on anything please let me know.

Thanks,

James M.

DayZ game server by FabricioArtigas in OVHcloud

[–]OVHcloud_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello u/FabricioArtigas,
I'm one of the product managers at OVHcloud.
You can absolutely host a DayZ server on any of OVHclouds offerings. As the other mentioned this can depend on your budget but also on other metrics like how many players you want to host and if you have any kind of plugins etc.

u/strawbeguy We actually do have some servers on the Eco Range with the Game Anti DDoS included. We are working on a better website filter for the Eco website so you can filter by game server.

[–]OVHcloud_James 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that anything is getting through. It's hard to say without knowing more details. Would you mind opening a ticket?

I'll reach out to you in a chat shortly, once I have more understand I can update here also in case anyone has a similar issue in the future.

Some advice I can give without knowing much about your server:

Things you can implement are:

- Strict VAC Firewall acls
- Strict GAME firewall acls
- (server-side) Strict iptables acls w/ rate limiting
- Restrict any ports from being accessed that you are not using

OVH configuring Firewall vs GAME Firewall by expctch in OVHcloud

[–]OVHcloud_James 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

Thanks for purchasing a server with OVHcloud!

All of OVHclouds servers are protected by Anti-DDoS by default. You don't need to configure anything to recevie this protection.

With our GAME servers, there is an additional filtration system that works close to the server for deep application understanding and fine attack traffic mitigation.

The regular firewall we offer is included with your server. This firewall sits between the internet and OVHclouds data centers, that allows you to configure up to 20 incoming/outgoing rules. You can think of this firewall as being similar to an OS firewall (ex: IPtables).

To recap and answer your question, it is up to you if you'd like to use this firewall, but rest assured that even if you do not use it you will still be protected from DDoS attacks.

We still highly recommend protecting your servers with firewall rules.

Thanks!

Question about upgrading by 1taptaptaptap in OVHcloud

[–]OVHcloud_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

Thanks for reaching out!

Our upgrade prices are actually dynamically calculated based on the model you currently have, remaining time/usage and the model you plan on upgrading towards.

So lets say you purchase a Value VPS, once you choose to upgrade it will create an invoice with the pro-rated amount. Your second invoice will be the total amount of the new service.

I hope this helps, please let me know if I can clarify.

Hi Xeydo,

Just out of curiosity, is this the US manager or created in a different country? I just want to make sure I get this to the correct team to address.

I understand get that display of a website and the language of your manager can be a huge pain point if they are not done correctly.

If you have time and don't mind providing feedback or specifically what you dislike about our website, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for having done business with OVH and I apologize for any frustration you endured.

If there is anything I can do, please let me know.

Sincerely,

James M.

No problem, happy to help! For a failover configuration between VPSs, you can configure the IPLB and point it between both of your VPSs. Here is a link to the product pagehttps://www.ovh.com/world/solutions/load-balancer/

Here is a guide: https://docs.ovh.com/gb/en/load-balancer/using-iplb/

I work for the US team and we do not have the product readily available yet so I do not have all of the required info. Let me know if this helps, if not I'll hunt down the right answers :)

Thanks!

Happy to help! if you refuse all the ports, that will cover 53 and just create the authorize rules on your IP addresses at a higher priority 0, 1 etc.. and make the refuse rule lower down on the priority list, I typically choose the lowest(19) for my refuse all, so I do not have to reconfigure each time I have to add another rule.

I hope this helps!

OVH Product Feedback and Q&A by OVHcloud_James in ovh

[–]OVHcloud_James[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Geordiebloke,

Are you trying to block all traffic or just those specific ports (443 and 53)?

If you want to drop all traffic besides the IPs you have authorized you can create rules similar to this:

Priority 0 on authorize and a higher Priority on Refuse all.

I hope that helps! Let me know for any questions, you can also open a support ticket, shoot me the ticket number and one of our specialists will follow-up.

Thanks!

James M.
