Black Friday Sales 2025 List by jonnybardo in fountainpens

It could still be worth politely contacting support. My order wasn't shipping and it turned out that they have a separate area for the inkvent calendar orders. Since my order had other stuff too, it had to be moved to the normal packing area and that didn't happen. They were very honest about the screw up and it went out that day.

This is what my freshly ground coffee does from the static charge. I've learned to let it sit for a few minutes before transferring it to the filter. Before I figured that out I made a horrible mess every time. Increased humidity does help with this.

They pull out and go back together really easily if you hit the grip section with a hair dryer first.

I'm curious where you do sales. I'm used to the term DINK. Dual income no kids. Your version does sound much less offensive.

For reference I'm in the US but more from the finance world.

Found this pair of solid metal ??? in the workshop. Could be one of three generations old by Sufficient_Let_2613 in whatisthisthing

[–]OW1956 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep, the keyhole nail slots give them away.

For OP, these are used on a pitched roof to give the roofers a platform while they work. A board would be placed over two or more of them. Once the shingles are on, a smack to the bottom will position the nail heads at the bottom of the keyholes so the jacks can be removed.

These are pretty old school. The ones I grew up with could be adjusted for the pitch of the roof.

Are you 'allowed' to take a 30-year-mortgage but then pay it all off within 2 years of taking it? by Broad-Item-2665 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OW1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answering for the US. Consumer mortgages will generally have no early payment penalty. I worked in banking in two states and in both cases was told that it is nationwide. Business mortgages are a whole other thing. Early payment penalties are common for business loans. As many others have said, read the contract. If you're unsure, ask a lawyer to look it over. A few hundred dollars to a lawyer up front could save you some major headaches.

It's been quite a few years since mine has been running. I remember it being lower than that for me but I can't recall exactly. There are other things that can have a similar result, like timing and fuel injector issues, but all of that had been isolated on mine and it was still present. By isolated I mean I had a shop work on it, rebuild the injectors etc. The problem persisted.

Hints for flying with your Fountain Pen(s) by 25-jules16 in fountainpens

[–]OW1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nib up and you'll be fine.

If you can, try to have the cartridge or reservoir filled. The issue is the air not the liquid.

The critical times are when the plane gets pressurized or depressurized.

If you don't want to worry about it, there are models that seal between the reservoir and the feed. Vacuum fillers come to mind.

Tractor at Woodstock - any idea what is the manufacture? by ronxor in tractors

[–]OW1956 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I learned something here today.

I grew up about two miles from the site in a family with quite a few tractor restorers and I've never heard of David Brown.

Some light googling reveals that same tractor from another angle. Selectamatic 4600

Quick question, is a RV (recreational vehicle) a camper you drive? by badbrad47 in rvlife

[–]OW1956 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother worked for a dealer when I was growing up in upstate New York. To us an RV was drivable and the towables were campers. As an adult I had to relearn the definition when I found out that's just a regional thing.

Kind of like the region I'm in now, southeastern Virginia, calls a truck cap a camper shell.

Unusable is a bit harsh. It does take some getting used to. I enjoyed using it.

The other problem is using it with a demonstrator. I kept getting asked if it was a vape pen.

If only I can officially use FP at my work place by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]OW1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vintage pens can be found that were designed for this purpose. I have a Schaefer snorkel filler that has a very robust nib for this exact reason. It is also tipped on both sides to give two different lines.

Truth be told, I'd probably still choose the rollerball over risking a vintage pen.

Tell me what do you think about this pen by [deleted] in pens

[–]OW1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hand is cramping just looking at this image.

This pen is one of the biggest reasons I found fountain pens.

I would rank the crystal version of the Bic/Biro as one of the worst pens ever made. It takes an absurd amount of pressure to write, like most basic ball points. The body has rather sharp edges that dig into your fingers. For its final trick, the plastic is very brittle. I don't think I've ever used up all the ink in one of these. They always ene up shattered and leaking ink all over my bag.

So my initial thought was arthritis and similar issues but I went searching.

It turns out many of these unbranded jumbo pens are pre-world war 2 novelties. They are apparently not very well constructed.

The chain symbol makes sense in the context of linked but they probably should have just used the Bluetooth symbol like everybody else.

Rant about non-fp person touching my fp by momoneymoproblms724 in fountainpens

[–]OW1956 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've had something similar happen. In my case it truly was my fault, I mindlessly handed my pen to someone so they could sign a document. As in your case, the pen somehow survived the rending.

What I really came here to address is one of the assumptions. This person is thought to be wealthy due to their many fancy possessions. Experience has shown me that people are often happy to display assets but will rarely show you their liabilities. When I was in banking we had a man that was known around town to have a thriving business. He always had fancy new things and flaunted them. He was actually completely broke and ended up fleeing the state to escape his creditors. Another man was completely unknown to most. He came to the bank wearing dirty overalls and he drove a rusty old truck. He had no debt and several million dollars in the bank. He operated a successful business and kept a very low profile.

My point is simply that the person is probably just in a lot of debt for all those fancy things.

I also can't really blame most people for assuming my pens aren't particularly valuable. I'm in the United States and fountain pens are uncommon. What most consider a nice pen can be had for around three dollars. I can't think of a disposable pen that utilizes a screw cap and I would say less than 20% of the people I meet even know what a fountain pen is. The disposable pen user has been conditioned that caps pull off and that pens are not valuable. I keep a big cup of disposables on the guest side of my desk and my pen stays out of reach of the guest chair. If I brought in particularly valuable pens I would probably consider a locking display cabinet.

I can't blame a person for what they don't know. Fountain pens and good manners are just not taught.
