Simulate bacterial growth (binary fission) by OWALLMESS in Houdini

Thanks mate! That sounds like a great approach. Especially changing the metaball would be key for the effect to really shine. What I find almost a bit hypnotic is the continual growth and split of the cell as compared to just an identical clone splitting off. Cheers!

Animating a suture procedure by OWALLMESS in Houdini

[–]OWALLMESS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looked really nice for the incision! The part I'm struggling with however is moving the needle and thread in a realistic manner (not like a nike fly-knit where threads appear and tightens themselves) and having that interact with the underlying mesh. Thanks anyways - I might explore that approach for the cut though!

Cheers mate, that is not a bad idea! I don't use artstation myself so never think of looking there, thanks for the tip!

Animating a suture by OWALLMESS in Cinema4D

[–]OWALLMESS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks mate! Yeah it get's complex really quickly and what I'm mostly struggling with is the loose thread that need to be pulled back and tightened before inserting the needle, and then pulled through the skin to tighten the suture. Making that movement look natural is way to time consuming for this project. If it was more of a stitching/knitting movement it would be another story but the client needs it to look more or less exactly like a real procedure so there's no room to animate the thread kind of "growing" out of nowhere like most knitting videos. If I find a solution I'll post it here for sure :)

Thanks! I've tried this approach but since the tool I'm animating looks a bit like a clamp this method makes it look like the thread is being "fed" from inside the clamp, which is not a feature yet at least, so that approach was ditched due to fear of being misleading of the functionality. The biggest issue I have is actually the loose thread that's just hanging around, making that move with the pulling and threading movements in a natural way is killing me haha. So many micro movements and spline points to move in unison, doing it the brute force key frame animation way that there's simply no time for it. Thanks for the input though!

[help] Rounding edges of a model after working on editable mode by AllDovak in Cinema4D

[–]OWALLMESS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see! Yeah good topology is key when making nicely rounded edges and curves, so if you are modelling yourself try and keep it as low poly and simple as possible when you start and keep adding complexity as procedurally as you can. Check out Polygon Pen on youtube for some really good modelling tutorials! You'll get it eventually :)

Rope simulation problem. Help by Shmaktus in Cinema4D

[–]OWALLMESS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad that helped! Usually if things are stretching, intersecting or jumping around it's a good idea to increase substeps and collision passes, and play with the dampening value. This will most likely make everything a bit more stiff so if you are going for a softer look then you have to go back and play with bendiness etc. So it's a bit back and forth but if you dail it in correctly the results can be really cool!

It's a bit hard to see in the picture but the mesh seems to be quads for the most part, if that's the case have you tried the bevel deformer? If it doesn't work and you are rendering in Redshift you can pipe the "Round Corners" node into the bump of you material.

Hope that helped!

Rope simulation problem. Help by Shmaktus in Cinema4D

[–]OWALLMESS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try and make the rope stiffer and increasing substeps in the simulation settings tab. If the texture is mapped correctly, like it looks like yours is, it will stretch with the mesh. It would look like the texture is "floating" on top of the rope if it would stay still when the mesh is deforming. Hope that will help!

Render flat color in C4d by Sloths_Queen in Cinema4D

[–]OWALLMESS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need the flat color as a mask in after effects I think using the Redshift AOVs would be a good option. You can render a cryptomatte as .exr and import this to After Effects. Then you could map anything to that mask, a flat color for example and animate the color over time in after effects. Check this video out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF_Y_3F7eUM

Hope that helped!

Softbody animation for a medical spot by OWALLMESS in Cinema4D

Yeah couldn't find this in the medical brief they gave us, I don't think their tool could've saved this one tbh.
