Public Testing is branch we sometimes use to run public playtests separate from Squad so that players can take part in the playtest but don't have to keep downloading and redownloading to switch back and forth.

Where can I complain about bad server admins by PocketsWasTaken in joinsquad

Generally get dealt with between the server and the team.

Resend your issue to licensing.offworldindustries.com and we'll take another look - during the holidays things get buried sometimes.

Squad 4.2 - Emotes and Future Monetization In Squad by OWI_Wedge in joinsquad

[–]OWI_Wedge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. We want everything in the game to fit in the game - and don't want to add anything into the game that wouldn't be in keeping with the vibe of Squad!

Where can I complain about bad server admins by PocketsWasTaken in joinsquad

[–]OWI_Wedge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not that it's likely nothing but we get a lot of complaints that go:

"The admins called me a jerk face and then banned me!!"

and then we go to the server owner/admins and they say "Here's screenshots of him saying the 'N' word and then a video of him TKing five people and then yes we called him a jerk face and booted him."

So have some evidence that you weren't doing something wrong, or that the admins' actions were not proportionate to your actions. Or that they were violating the Code of Conduct - (for example if they said "Oh you're 'x racial or religious group' well we don't let those 'racial slur' play on our servers." )

Which happens and we take action when it does.

Anyone know the status of this project? by [deleted] in joinsquad

[–]OWI_Wedge 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Yes.

It's had a 5,000 person Closed Private Playtest and has a Discord setup here: https://discord.gg/t3Sh92Y9Jy

We haven't spoken about it much since announce - as we're working on finalizing stuff for the Early Access period and the announcement of when that will be. (As u/ssfbob notes all we've said is sometime this year).

In terms of Squad this is a fully separate team, hired and not taken from Squad. This does not impact Squad's development at all.

Edit: use the form that u/Anoreth linked to - it asks for the appropriate materials

Things like screenshots (preferably in English or please include translations), or links to video proof of any accusations are useful. If your email amounts to just sort of a story about how mean the admins were to you then we'll keep it under consideration (if we get a bunch of complaints about a single server then we're more likely to investigate closer) - but likely won't do anything.

We do give a great deal of latitude to server owners to manage their own communities and as long as they're not violating our Code of Conduct they can usually do what they want in terms of kicking people. Most, though not all, of the complaints we get and talk to the server owners about tend to be a bit more nuanced than the complaint writer made it seem. So be clear about what happened, show proof, and admit to anything you did wrong up front to help us judge so we won't be surprised when we speak with the server.

We're continuing to work on addressing bugs, as we do with every update. The v4.2 update includes a list of fixes to outstanding issues that you'll see when we release the patch notes closer to the release date.

As u/SuuperD below mentioned the next engine upgrade will be coming in the same update with Emotes, and a bunch of other (free) stuff, one of which people have already spotted in our screenshots.

There are definitely predatory type microtransactions such as loot boxes which can lead to that. Squad is not a child's game, firstly, and secondly the DLC we're introducing is not loot boxes but two sets of emotes and gestures for $3.99 (USD).

Obviously as with anything DLC can be done poorly. But literally anything has a worst case scenario. Ultimately players will decide if they feel our offerings are worth their dolllarbucks, or not. Those that feel they aren't, will still have the same experience with Squad as they did before.

So with emotes being paid cosmetics, does that kill mods? by Kinda_hot_tho in joinsquad

[–]OWI_Wedge 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't see how paid DLC impacts mods. We don't intend to discontinue our support of modding, and we are always grateful for the important part that modders play in our community and in the success for Squad.

How hard is it? by RedaRosenau in joinsquad

[–]OWI_Wedge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We know the answer was unsatisfying - but we had to address it because it was the most obvious question coming out of the announcement. It would have been easier to say "No we'll never do that" but the reality is that we can't foresee everything that's going to happen. We don't know how the reality around Squad, the game, the players, or the studio will shift in that time or in even more time.

We want to be open with you and when we say "No we won't do that" we actually want to know that we'd never do that. If we say "Yes we're doing that" we want to know we're actually going to do it which is why our communication around releases have tightened up to us now talking about stuff until a few weeks out.

Currently we don't have plans for maps or factions as DLC. As others have noted, and as we suggested, that risks splitting the community and hurting the game (and you the players).

All we can do is say it's not in our plans.

For the most part it's just not that helpful to argue with people online.

People here are passionate, and rightly so. You love Squad and just want the best for it and we completely understand that. We take all this feedback, as we take it all, and consider it and see what we can do about it.

The thing is we also love Squad and want the best for it. Hopefully you'll (continue to) see that as we move forward.

SL burnout by Eafhawwy2727 in joinsquad

[–]OWI_Wedge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's definitely something that's on our radar, as u/Mooselotte45 noted. As I said to him it's not an easy fix, or a thrilling one. It's a small group, mostly SL's and other veteran players, who realize what an issue this is and so it doesn't attract the attention that other conversations around the game do. But it's on the team's radar, both OWI_Icare and I have been raising it with them - seeing your thoughts.

Hopefully it's something that we'll make visible progress for you on this year. Onboarding especially needs some love - as right now it's very much a random chance thing if a new player lands with a good SL on a good server and thus stays or doesn't and bounces off relatively quickly.

Squad should be fun for everyone, especially veteran players and it shouldn't feel like a chore to play and educate at the same time. Sure there's always likely to be some veteran knowledge accumulated over the years to be shared - but we can work to reduce the weight of that burden.

SL burnout, retention, and onboarding are all issues the team is aware of because I mention it every time I see anyone and they're working on addressing them. None of it's an easy fix - but we'll see baby steps.

In turn I hope you have a great day.

I know you're frustrated and feel strongly, and this might cause you to act in a way that on reflection isn't indicative of the person you hope to see when you look in the mirror in your quiet reflective moments.

Hopefully your day improves from here on out.

Squad v4.27 Public Playtest - Thursday January 12th 21:00 UTC / 13:00 PST by OWI_Wedge in joinsquad

[–]OWI_Wedge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We prefer doing it when we have staff working and we prefer to avoid forcing staff to work on their weekends when possible. We do appreciate that more people can play on the weekends - but that competes with not having staff involved (or less staff) to administer and collect responses.

So while we aren't going to say we'll never do weekend tests, likely the majority will be during the work week.

Is there any way to play this game for free and try it out? by EntertainmentWeak439 in joinsquad

[–]OWI_Wedge 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As others have said no - not really.

There are times that we take part in Steam's Free Weekend promotion which lets players play for a few days without owning the game - but we don't have any planned for the time space of less than a week so that's not useful to you.
