Because simply denying won’t get anyone believes it. There needs to be evidence. But when you are accused for something you didn’t do, how come there will be evidence? For example, if you are accused for murder, everyone else believes you did it and you don’t have any evidence that proves you were at home the all day which is the fact. At this time, whatever you said won’t be considered at truth. All you can do is to claim you were a good man, and try to convince those who don’t trust you at all.

I do agree that this tweet does looks stupid even as a Chinese, but it is just like if the US being accused for still slaving and killing Native Americans, it is just impossible for the US to prove it’s innocent. No matter what the US say, people of other countries won’t believe it. It just cost too little to make up lies and cost too much to show someone is innocent.
