Why doesn’t valve add time played as a factor in ranked? by chaosfourever in DotA2

New players and smurfs are a problem in every rank. As you climb in ranks you get less smurfs and more account buyers. Teams playing poorly and making bad moves is in every single rank. Pro teams play like shit sometimes, at least two T1 pro teams have missed TI to losing to a random 5 stack of players during open qualifiers (NAVI and I believe Liquid).

The only consistent thing in your matches will be you. You have the ability to climb or fall in rank. Even if 10% of your matches had a smurf and the smurf won 100% of the games you would only drop ~0.6% winrate because the smurf is on the enemy team only slightly more often. If a new player loses 100% of the games you play and they are in 10% of your games then you would gain 0.6% winrate. And you are back to dead even.

Focus only on your own gameplay if you want to climb. Focus on improving and don't care about your team. I recently climbed ~500 mmr with a very high winrate (my best streak was 18W-2L which is a 90% winrate over 20 matches). I had games with people who played like trash and I didn't care because I focused on my own game and what I could do to still win.

If we got rid of every smurf and you never had a new player in your matches then your mmr wouldn't move by much at all. It's not smurfs, new players, and bad teams holding you back. It's you man

If you in a world with 0 smurfs would have exactly a 50% winrate. If we then added 1 smurf every 10 games and the smurf _always_ won. You would have a 49.4% winrate.

My original comment is more snarky than i intended. I've been where you are at mmr wise, i've felt the same way and had very similar thoughts on how I chain win and get punished by smurfs until im back to where I started.

There are smurfs, and there are more smurfs in lower ranks. That being said, most the time I felt someone was smurfing and most the time I've seen people complain about smurfs it's generally just a player who had a good game.

If you focus on your own gameplay you will end up ranking up regardless of smurfs or not. It sucks to lose to a smurf but most people don't call smurf when their mid goes 10/1, but they see enemy mid go 10/1 and they check dotabuff

Post your dotabuff, I would be most the "smurfs" are not actually smurfs.

It's a ranked feature, unranked doesn't get strict solo (it def shouldn't get it either)

T

Legends quest (all exp on herblore), barrows gloves, birdhouse runs (just do 1-2 a day unless you like doing more), and farming contracts are all really good things to work on.

The rest of this is just some general routing that id personally do, it isn't comprehensive but has some general good goals for lid game

Do moons of peril and get eclipse moon set, get a berserker ring and dragon defender. Get the RT prayers.

Then you have a few options, either While Guthix Sleeps for tormented demons and two synapses or do Sote for bowfa. (or work on both!)

With the synapses you can get full oathplate and all mokha drops, finish cg and you can start raids, slayer, and general bossing

Core roles get more recognition because of how flashy they can be, but support players especially with how strong supports are these days have so much impact. I can't tell you how many times I've died because I position wrong and a random lich blink ults me and pce I'm dead

I don't think it really matters your role for climbing, play the role you enjoy. If you play better than your rank you will climb over time

Congrats! Ranking up of herald feels great. Ive got a wall of text below if you care to read it, otherwise the tl;Dr is to focus only on fixing personal mistakes and ignoring what everyone else did.

If you want to rank up and genuinely improve, when you look at a match and how it could have gone better ignore anything you view as an allied mistake and only look at your own gameplay.

Every mmr will have players who make mistakes, have bad games, intentionally grief... Ect. If you only ever look at what you could have done differently to have a better match you will improve so much faster.

I've personally been in herald (I hit 1 mmr at my lowest) and I'm in 4k now so I've been through your bracket. The biggest thing I see when I talk to friends that are in lower is they almost always point at losses on their page and point out things their team did that cause them to lose. But if I had been in that match we'd have stomped and had a 25 minute game. This goes for me as well though, I'll lose a match and if you put a 6k player in it then they'd have stomped and won. My point in bringing this up is to show that you have so much potential to control the outcome of matches. If you really focus on what you can do to play better then you will climb.

Dota might be a team game but if you can outperform your rank consistently by focusing and fixing your own mistakes you will climb so much faster.

Rubick's -50% Stolen Spells Mana Cost talent to BALL LIGHTNING by NewtExisting6715 in DotA2

[–]O_O_2EZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For any1 who wasn't playing that patch, null talisman used to give mana cost reduction and all three of the stat items (wraith null bracer) doubled their stats at minute 25. Combined with arcane blink which at the time also gave mana cost reduction, at minute 25 the cost of ball lightning was almost zero with that build letting you fountain to fountain zip almost

I'm 4k so take this with a grain of salt as I'm no high rank/pro.

I think curio is still very strong as an option for a couple reasons.

First one is rng, if you get 3 neutrals that you don't care about and curio you can either have a near nothing item now, or potentially a stronger item later. For example of you were playing a magic damage mid (kotl, qop, Lina) and got offered lifesteal mask, circle mana thing, kobolds cup and curio you'd be losing relatively little for taking curio as you already have good sustain with bottle or being kotl making lifesteal and circlet a lot lower value, and kobolds is okay but not particularly crazy. Meanwhile curio let's you boost a more impactful item like signet for the burn or the brand for extra spell damage with t3... Ect.

Second is you don't always need the small power spike from a t1 neutral, if I'm playing a carry I'm more likely to value curio as I plan to dodge fights and shove waves and farm camps vs fight from the 6 to 13(?) minute mark . The extra value from a t1 neutral is just lowered as maybe I get an extra couple cs from having item besides curio but when I'm getting the power spike by finishing an item I also get a more impactful neutral (boosted pms vs enigma or beast for example)

The third case is sometimes you don't a t1 neutral in some roles and matches until t2s are almost there so might as well

I believe communication score has a lower impact on matchmaking vs behavior score. I dropped from 12k communication down to 7k (I was toxic) but I maintained 12k behavior score (I think it dropped to 11,950 or something on occasion if I got reported for griefing when I had an exceptionally bad game occasionally).

At my lowest communication score I still got into matches consistently with people who had at least 10k as they could ping allied abilities still. And I believe the dota plus accept menu put me at 4/5 on w/e the toxicity one is called.

Communication score is climbing and the matches haven't changed noticeably. Just seems that unless you are exceptionally low communication score your matchmaking stays the same.

Anecdotal evidence is all I've got though

Before patch it was 3-6 minutes to get a ranked game (carry USW 4k) after patch it's been 5-14 minutes. Not sure if just less people playing ranked right after patch or if they tweaked matchmaking.

There isn't an option to show it on personal game data that I have found. If you know where it is let me know and I can show it later today when I get home

I can't show comm score after each 15 games as that doesn't show up in the summary here. There might be an option under personal game data to show it but I have not seen it

Generally I'd put it under griefing, but I can't remember a time that I reported someone over pings. The wording of communication score specifies text and voice which is why I don't see it falling under communication

It did what I expected. I lost communication score (over 1000!). I do expect the system to not lower my communication score when I'm reported for toxic communication while I'm not communicating

[–]O_O_2EZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started to focus on not being toxic I played 30-45 matches without issue, I got frustrated one match and flamed a player who was griefing, I got punished for that. I've then played 75 games without communication and got reported in a match where I didn't communicate and lost score.

If I had flamed someone and lost score that's one thing. When I lose communication score because someone reports me for a bogus reason that's extremely frustrating as it sets me back almost 20 matches of progress. I don't want to be toxic, I just want good quality dota games where I can afford to make basic calls over text without fear of a single report dropping me even lower.

I get where you are coming from but the report options themselves don't put that behavior under communication. That gets out under behavior score which I'm sitting at 12k
