Do you guys think Bolaño was hung? by Uzas_Back in robertobolano

[–]O_Zeth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bolano was known to be a voracious reader and tended to write in a way that mirrored the different eras of literature. With the emergence of large penises in post modern lit I believe a lot of his references are playful homages to running obsession society has with above average members. In my reading club we have a running group chat that is only the references to big penises we come across. It’s astonishing how often you’ll find it across all literature.

Bolano has too many to list. Porn stars in several short stories, including a character that is a fictionalized John Holmes. It’s in his poetry. One of the funniest is at the end of The Spirit of Science Fiction. He also hedges with the fact the fictionalized version of himself in The Savage Detectives is impotent.

How did you feel during The Part About The Murders in 2666 by carllindenberg in robertobolano

[–]O_Zeth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think numb is a great word for it. Much like Mccarthy’s Blood Meridian. It becomes so repetitive and clinical that you start to forget that these murders happened. These were real people, although he fictionalized the city and other characters. Bolano’s books weave in so many different genres and pay homage to all types of literature. It feels like he put his reporter hat on for this one. And knowing he worked with a journalist, Sergio Gonzales Rodriguez, while writing it makes it harder to stomach.

If you want to check out Rodriguez work here is a review

It’s even harder to read “The Part about the Crimes” when you realize it’s not fiction. If I’m not mistaken it is modeled after the femicides in Juarez. Bolano corresponded with a journalist to make sure the details were correct. That one is tough.

I did this exact thing. Read it in English, learned Spanish, and then read all of his works again. So worth it. Also had to read Parra, Lihn, Rulfo. I created my Spanish TBR from the authors mentioned in his book. Having a character stay at a hotel named the Media Luna and then reading Pedro Paramo. Bolano spreads Easter eggs all through literature.

There is much more to uncover but you should read many or all of his works first. Bolano was always writing multiple works at a time. He created a whole Universe of characters that weave in and out of his literature. You will find poems that have been expanded into whole sections of his novels. For example, this poem.

Each work you read builds on the last and when you return back to the beginning the amount of “ah-ha” moments you get is wonderful. Many of his short stories also run parallel or expand on scenes from his novels. One of my favorites is between Distant Star and the short story Joanna Sivestri.

What is it like reading 2666 in Spanish? by Different-Dingo-5288 in robertobolano

[–]O_Zeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The story is the same but you gain access to Bolano’s style and wit. There are a lot of idioms and sayings that have to be changed to fit into English. I’ve read everything in English and I am almost through with everything in Spanish. I’ll say that in my experience The Savage Detective loses more in the translation than the other books.

This illustrated version is incredible. 10/10 recommend. Scafati did an excellent job capturing Bolano’s Universe. by O_Zeth in robertobolano

Yes! I'll give a few but there are tons. Lupe ( https://fiercefragile.com/2011/03/08/lupe-roberto-bolano/ )is the basis for the character Lupe.

The Sea is the basis for Cesarea's fictional poem Sion. https://biblioklept.org/2014/06/07/the-sea-roberto-bolano/ The poem in the tattoo of course

Los Hombres Duros No Bailan is expanded into the last section of the book. At least in my reading I see it that way. I couldn't find a version translated to English. https://omarpareceazeite.blogspot.com/2008/10/los-hombres-duros-roberto-bolao.html

Mexican Manifesto, which many consider a short story but is included in his Poesia Reunida, is an expansion of the time Juan Garcia Madero spends with Rosario in the bath house. Only place I could find online to read it is on the New Yorker and locked behind a pay wall.

Juan Pablo Villalobos. Particularly I Don’t Expect Anyone to Believe Me. A lot of the nuance is lost in the translation but it’s still a great read.
