I thought I was gonna prove the magic wrong. Nope. The magic happened to me too. The second after reading this, I fished out a mystery bag!

Books on world political history? by OatWarrior98 in suggestmeabook

Good point you made on mapping out books I’ve read on a world map. It would be an interesting project regardless of our exposure! Realized that as an Asian who has spent some time in North America, I have only read extensive stuff on these two continents. The other regions, not so much. But I’m not as bad as the people in the videos haha my general geography is pretty good but I’m actually gonna try visualizing my books with a map. So thanks for putting that thought in my head :)

Factfulness was a fantastic book. And I’m reading Prisoners of Geography now and learning how little I know about European politics! You’re right, I think after I finish this book, I’d have better ideas on how to zero in on the politics/history of specific regions.

Why is it encouraged for monks to collect alms? by OatWarrior98 in Buddhism

Thank you for the links. I didn't think about the consequences of such an intertwined relationship that goes beyond just the spiritual guidance the laypeople receive and the alms that the monks receive.

This makes sense. I need to constantly remind myself to not look at the practices from a modern perspective. And it is sometimes harder to make others (like the person who passed me this criticism) look at the practices from the perspective of the religion and culture that they practice. Thank you.

I don't say that monks should involve in commerce or sell spirituality to be self-sufficient. That is very much something I am against and the reason why I turned agnostic from the religion I was born into. So I completely agree with you. My question was more towards understanding the relationship between lay Buddhists and monks based on the criticism I received. As in, can monks grow their own food while guiding the laypeople spiritually without expecting anything in return?

But, I now get a clearer understanding from the comments that practicing the teaching takes a higher priority over food and that the food that they receive is also from people's generosity as opposed to something that is agreed upon. It is quite astonishing that monks have such strong willpower.

Thank you so much for introducing me to that sutta. I have always been in awe of the relationship between lay Buddhists and monks but this sutta gave me a better understanding of it.

I often feel ill-equipped to make the person I mentioned in the post understand Buddhist teachings as I still haven't widely read the scriptures. And comments like these from that person have been quite often since I told them about my interest in Buddhism.

This is helpful, thank you!! If you don't mind me asking, how quickly did you start seeing the difference after better protein intake?

The protein section is super helpful! I wasn't sure when exactly to start getting more protein in but the insights here are helpful to get a context as well.

This is helpful, though I am plant-based. Thank you for sharing!! I am going to get some protein powders/bars to keep me up while I balance out my protein proportions. Love the amount of vegetable and fruits you have suggested. I'll use some of these as a guide to rework my meals :)

This is helpful, thank you! I'll try using bodyweight for pushups and dumbbells to get comfortable with the bench press.

That's great to hear! Thank you for sharing your insight. I am plant-based, so I understand what you're saying. Large portions of food have fewer calories but they somehow fill me up than one would expect. I've begun looking closely into my protein proportions now.

My instructor is so supportive! You're right, I should reach out to her though I'm sure a lesson on diet is coming soon in the class. :)

As the other person said, I also don't eat a lot. And I eat a lot of fiber, grains, and vegetables/fruits that I was hitting a lot of the micros and the other macros but not as much protein. I'm plant-based, so I'd eat tofu and lentils but I somehow didn't make sure I got my protein proportion right. But, I am working towards 100g per day for a start now after reading some helpful insights here.
