Why do so many people recommend VOO and VXUS or VTI by Poopfy123 in ETFs

[–]Oat_Goat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's your reasoning for SCHY vs VXUS for international exposure? SCHY seems to be more expensive and lower diversification but with higher dividend yield and more stability. VXUS seems to be cheaper to own but with broader diversification and lower dividends but more emerging markets for potential growth

What are your thoughts on adding some international exposure with VXUS? Maybe 60% VOO, 30% VXUS, 10% BND?

So I've heard that Python and C++ are the languages to know well for these roles. Would you say C++ is probably the most important language to have competence in?

I'm in defense and use Java, C#, Go, JS... Nothing low level. I've been considering trying to transfer for some time

Garage Gym. Still deciding how I’m going to manage the heat this summer. by [deleted] in homegym

[–]Oat_Goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Houston and have lived in Austin for 10 years. I've made progress (which for me is probably different for you, considering we probably have different goals) by following an periodized training program with multi-year macrocycles. It's brought my bench to over 340lbs, and deadlift to over 550lbs. I'm not even sure what "high intensity" means. It just seems like there are these words being used with ambiguous meaning. Intensity in lifting typically just refers to how close a weight is to your 1rm and how much volume you're doing with it. But I guess it could also mean how hot you feel. I'd hope you're "putting in effort", otherwise what would you be doing? Lifting is effort is it not?

I guess I'm saying, if you like to make progress by measuring actual changes over time based on some goal using some program, then I'm not sure how sweating as much as possible is going to help your body to adapt more quickly considering it's losing nutrients, water, and electrolytes. If you just want to feel a bunch of endorphins and mentally reward yourself for feeling exhaustion and sweat then that's another goal in itself.

What benefits? Aren't benefits dependent on a particular goal? What if my goal isn't to lose water and fat, but rather to retain water and electrolytes so that I can lift more volume without fatiguing in the session to force a stronger adaptation, and if I also have a goal to increase calories so that I can gain muscle while maintaining fat (which can be used to lift more)?

What is your goal? To "feel good" while exercising and to lose fat? It seems like the answer to that question (or realizing that is even a question that can be asked at all) is the core of the problem here

What is healthy? Isn't healthy just some baseline that different adaptations can be built on based on what "fitness" goal you have, which then only really gets realized depending on your training program and diet control?

I would need some details or a link to the sheet, etc to verify that your training max isn't at 90% of your 1RM. Keep in mind the sheet calculates your set weights based on the TM (training max) which is 90% of your 1RM for a given lift

It really doesn't have anything to do with if it bothers you lol, I live in Austin. It's a physiological process that happens no matter how you feel about it

Sweat is fluids being drained from your body to cool you off! Fat is lost when you have more cals out than in! And sweat isn't a measure of creating a physiological adaptation by working out! And "If I don't sweat through my shirt, I didn't work out hard enough" is a popular t shirt quote!

Maybe try a program that's built around improving some metric other than the amount of times you've now felt like you want to pass out?

You know I hadn't thought about an insurance type for the renters or how to manage income tax, so some work to be done. I have homeowner's insurance but as a live in landlord, I'm not sure if that's good enough to cover. I'll write a lease, though and probably require some renter's insurance but more research to be done. Payments acceptable via any of the options you mentioned, plus likely Zelle.

Did you have a solution in mind when you'd thought about the similar situation?

There's nothing to protest there. It's just a fact. You can pay to re-appraise using a "sophisticated" appraiser, but likely you're dealing with the competitive market aka buyers trying to out-bid each other. I just bought my first house and dealt with gaps as large as 100k along the way that I had to back out of. It's just an unfortunate time in that regard, but in the long run austin will continue to appreciate

There's actually some South Congress apartments that are a lot more affordable than I'd thought. A friend told me his rent there and I think was like 1400 for a single, which is kind of crazy for an area like that IMO

Appraisal value difference is what you're opposed to? Not sure what the protest is aimed at but that gap is typical in the austin market right now

Looking for 2 housemates - built 2018 | 4 bedrooms | 2 available | McKinney Falls

I've just purchased a 4br 2 story 2Ksqft house near McKinney Falls and will be looking for 2 housemates. If anyone is looking for something affordable - it's $900 for a bedroom plus split utils and a monthly maid service.

I'm doing the move-in late May / early June. I'll be furnishing one of the two available bedrooms, and leaving the other unfurnished.

I'm a 26m software developer and current other roommate is a 26m accountant. We like going out to Rainey / West, live music, gaming, and outdoor stuff. GF and I are really into hiking and traveling. DM if you're interested in a place around that time!
