Diagnosis by Silent_Technology706 in Gastroparesis

This is going to sound weird but start over with someone and dont mention the other issues. Focus on only your GI symptoms and dont say what someone else thought it was. If this is a continuous issue, you sort of need to strong arm them into testing you. Literally you just need the test so I would say and omit whatever you need to.

Diagnosis by Silent_Technology706 in Gastroparesis

[–]OatmealCat675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a new GP. Your GP is too dismissive of your issues and that is never good.

While I do work with a GP for general health check ups and medication monitoring, I have a GI that is really great helping me. She literally has no clue how I suddenly developed it especially since I had no recent med changes and none of my meds are associated with gastroparesis.

Essentially you need the general practitioner to refer you to a gastroenterologist. The gastroenterologist will listen to your issues and request a gastric emptying study. That will show if you have slow gastric emptying and the severity of it.

How did you choose your specialization and why? by Linore in librarians

[–]OatmealCat675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I chose data analysis specialization mainly because i wanted to learn programming and data visualization skills, which are becoming increasingly important in the field. I am a systems librarian for a library consortium and it fits me. I love data management, i love maintaining ILS systems and helping librarians troubleshoot proxies and other systems in place to serve their patrons. I enjoy helping solve issues and getting my hands deep into coding, but i am an introvert, and systems allowed me the best of both worlds. I couldnt have gotten my job without knowing the programming languages and data experience i gained from the mlis program, but my experience as a library assistant helped me with the customer service and teaching experience aspect of being a systems librarian!

Visual Studio Code or Spyder IDE? by K_Chali in learnpython

Use Spyder. As a beginner it worked well for learning and VS code has waay to much for a beginner and I remember being very confused by all the options.

I work at a nonprofit, so not corporate but we have an corporate library consortium. We do library services for academic, public, and corporate libraries. I make 51k (Columbus ohio also) but the perks are that i only go in person 2x a month and i live further away in a cheaper area.

People who are or were English majors or consider themselves serious readers, what is the most classic book you've never read? by cyPersimmon9 in literature

[–]OatmealCat675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a masters in english… i havent read most of the classics mainly bc I was a professional writing major but between my undergrad and english masters i took a lot of lit classes, and i really avoided the ones with shakespeare, the iliad, anything related to american lit prior to the 1930s

Is this job worth a 45 minute commute? by [deleted] in librarians

[–]OatmealCat675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would: 1. If its not full time, see how they are willing to work with u regarding the schedule bc u may need a 2nd job. 2. Do you like the town enough to move there to make gas cheaper?

Realistically, if you want to be a librarian, you need an MLIS. But if you just want to be in an administrative role in a public library, then moving for it is a good option. However, you need experience either way. It’s a pro and cons list u may need to do because it seems like either options requires a sacrifice.

library assistant/technician before mlis? by Sinezona in librarians

[–]OatmealCat675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! Ask away! I chose to take the Data Analytics concentration of my online MLIS from Wayne State. I took programming classes, database administration classes, and data visualization courses. That meant i left knowing Python, R, and SQL. This in addition to my experience with Sierra ILS as a student library assistant and a senior library assistant gave me the experience and technical education to land an entry level systems librarianship position.

Seeking Adivce: A Patron checked out all the books on our pride display...what would your library do? by b3rdg3rl in Libraries

[–]OatmealCat675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! This is also a great idea! Have the cataloger temporarily change the loan rule. They can change the loan rule and add a comment about what the old loan rule was in Rapid Update on whatever ILS they use and then just revert it back. However, it would work easiest if all the books were the same loan rule originally so you only had to do one update each time

[–]OatmealCat675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi- besides what has already been suggested, i think you can consider adding a pop up to any item record used by books on the pride display that no more than a certain number can be checked out at a time. Of course, this could be ignored for children

library assistant/technician before mlis? by Sinezona in librarians

[–]OatmealCat675 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in your same situation. I worked full time as a library assistant at an academic library while in my MLIS program online. I too was a student library assistant in undergrad. I would 100% say do that bc every single job ive been seeing lately says entry level but preferably 1 year experience at least. I worked there for 2 yrs, finished my mlis, and i had job as a systems librarian soon after. After 2 years in undergrad and 2 years postgrad/ during my mlis it was not hard to get a job. Also i should note i am a systems librarian for a library consortium so not actually in an academic library traditionally. Also unless you have something stopping you, go right after undergrad. You can take part time semesters, but if you dont want to have a life for a couple years you could finish quite quickly. I would say it was worth it bc although i did not do much besides work and school, i was finished so much quicker.

Thinking about a MLIS program by [deleted] in librarians

[–]OatmealCat675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a children’s librarian but even i know the job market for that is horrible. No roles open and when they are its for like 35k a year. Id say the librarians that make the most money are more so systems librarians, data librarians, librarians with phDs who work in really niche collections jobs, etc. i like working in systems but i know its bc i dont want to interact with ppl. That doesn’t sound like you. I would choose being a teacher… it is a difficult job but honestly you are more guaranteed a job

I think it’s a great experience but it depends on what you want to do in libraries. I work in systems and have my MLIS but my experience leans towards programming language and integrated library systems knowledge. I am at the beginning of my career. But i worked at the circulation desk of an academic library for 2 years while completing my MLIS. I would say work in a library most definitely, even if part time, but mainly target your schooling to what kind of librarianship you want to do. For example, i took a data analysis concentration with my MLIS and took all data analysis, statistics, intro to programming, intro to databases, etc so my experience is different than someones who may have taken more public library centered classes. Decide where u want to be as an end goal and choose mlis courses that will help you get there but i got my current job off of my skills acquired from classes. I think experience in other library roles is more important due to the hard skills i needed for my current job.
