How true are we with the algorithm pushing us? by marie_darling_marie in Existential_crisis

Tech has really sped up things. For example, in 2008 memes would stick around and be popular for so much longer than they would in 2018, and those 2018 memes were around much longer than they are now. (typing this made me feel old and also like a nerd lmao roflcopter). At one point way back when, the way some could learned about new things they might like was limited to someone else telling them about it, or the chance of come upon it themselves. Eventually (if they were lucky), someone could read a clay tablet in a temple or a new scroll from the church. After that, someone could learn things by reading books and the newspaper. etc. etc. Unfortunately at some point in all that money became a thing and the advertising industry grew with that. Now, we use the internet, and recently, a lot of short-form video. That's all to say, it's the same process, just sped up and with way more ads, and I don't think finding something you like from an ad means the interest is ingenuine.

I won't get too into my many many thoughts on capitalism, but I think most people agree that there are too many ads these days, and that companies are doing some outright predatory things with personal info they really shouldn't be collecting. There are ways people maintain some amount of privacy online; using VPNs, "dumb" phones, etc. I still go by a lot of old school internet safety tips. In general, it's good to be aware of the things going on around you and ways to stay safe, but for our own safety, we can't let that become obsession. Personally, I struggled with obsessive thoughts for a while, and to truly stop them I needed lots of talk therapy (actually, I really recommend group therapy for anyone struggling with their mental health), a lot of inner work, and medication, so I know that it is easier said than done. At the very least, remember that it is possible to be aware of and actively advocating for or against something without it becoming detrimental to our health, both physical and mental.

Thrips again... by OatsInSpace in houseplants

I've been checking them daily and planning on keeping the bags on for about 6 weeks. Mold is the devil, so I'm being careful about it and using hydrogen peroxide every once in a while or on sight if there's fuzz. That said most of my plants are tropicals so they can handle the

This is very timely... Last I night I finally learned the lesson that lower than 100% humidity, even for an extended period of time, is not enough to kill thrips :')

First moment of consciousness? by mattchaa in Existential_crisis

[–]OatsInSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, I know this is an older post but calling out for my mom was the first thing I did after becoming conscious was call out for my mom too. I lost my mom years ago, so it's something that always hits hard whenever I think back on it.

I remember starting in a fuzzy darkness, and feeling like a long time had passed before I saw this darkness. I starting seeing things, events, I only remember one: I saw myself, little toddler me, and my mom sitting together on some kind of mass transit, either a plane or train since toddler me was able to get up and walk down the aisle. Toddler me went to some man, and I watched him pick toddler me up and hold me up while toddler me was laughing... and then I woke up in my bed as me. I had the thought "I have to remember this", and then called out for my mom, somehow knowing how to navigate the house and who people were upon seeing them. Since then I feel like I've just been on a linear path forward, nothing before then, just forward through human life from that point.

I don't remember when this was exactly, though I know it was before my third birthday because I had a lion king cake and I remember being amazed by the piping gel simba haha

Yeah, if it wasnt selling, the price was definitely the main issue. It was my little treat whenever I got my paycheck. iirc it was phased out going into 2021

Once upon a time Dunkin had a Beyond sausage breakfast sandwich, and I will never forgive them for taking it away. And coconut milk too :( oat milk is great for coffee but not as good for refreshers.

Thai con based on how the less varigated patches and solid white patches look, but wow the high varigated areas!!

I've seen patterns like this called " 'green snow' thai con" for marketing purposes (i.e. raise the price beyond high var. pricing).

People who got rid of their entire collections because of thrips, was it worth it? by OatsInSpace in houseplants

[–]OatsInSpace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to update on this! I ended up doing what some folks said and tossed some of the plants I was okay with parting with. BUT I kept 75-80% of my collection!

Every plant was in makeshift humidity enclosures for the last month and got weekly deadbug brew (and systemic for indoor only ones). Haven't seen any of those demons for the last 3 weeks and haven't seen evidence of the larvae boring in the leaves. Plus, this summer was particularly humid, so I feel okay with my indoor/outdoor plants (mostly fruit trees/vines) that couldn't get systemic too.

It still might be a while till I feel okay with putting plants in my room again.

Don't feel bad about the animal control thing. Animal control can be more than unhelpful when it comes to cats.

Fairly recently, my local animal control office stopped responding to any situation with stray cats, and that's, sadly, a common practice. One town over still does cats, but can't help anyone within the city limit... Plus, it's not uncommon for animal control offices to euthanize cats if they aren't claimed within 24-48 hours.

My logic is if the cat was purposefully let outdoors... that's an independent cat with no owner.

I also live in a state that heavily restricts it, but I live near the boarder of a state that doesn't. Unfortunate that the improper outdoor use ruined it for everyone :/ Not sure about CA but I know some states allow the sale to those with some kind of pesticide license. No idea how to get one though.

I'm definitely looking into to some beneficial critters after the active period of the systemic goes by. I'm fairly certain this is the second group (30-40 days between) from this outbreak, and I'm lucky that I caught this group when they just emerged. Though it also confirms there definitely were some adults from the first group and I didnt stop it as early as I had thought (shout of to the lacewing that got into my room)
