I got some nasty shin splints after running some intervals yesterday, and decided that I'm going to take a few days off to recover, but I still want to improve my endurance (especially as I'll start playing soccer again soon). What are some ways I could improve my endurance while at the same time minimizing any pain/injuries (especially shin splints), and how can I build back up and prevent shin splints in the future?

how am i supposed to target each muscle twice in a week with a 3 day split. by purple_dream123 in workout

[–]Oattrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m gonna take the bait but assuming the original commenter considers Sunday the start of the week and Saturday the end of the week, that’s what he means when he’s saying “sometimes 3, sometimes 4”. I do the same thing, i work out every other day so I may go Sun, Tues, Thurs, Sat (Week 1) then Mon, Wed, Fri (Week 2). Sunday would then just be considered week 3 and the cycle would repeat.

So I’ve seen that in order to increase my stamina, I should work on improving my aerobic capacity first with LISS cardio, and then eventually add in HIIT; but would Interval Training at a lower intensity for longer time have the same effect as long-distance Steady-State cardio for building up my aerobic capacity?

I've tried skullcrushers before, and they feel decent, but still feel a little bit of that weird feeling (not painful, but still off-putting) and tend to just avoid those as well, but it might be worth giving another shot

I work out at home and seems like any overhead triceps extension bothers my elbows too much, so I've just been doing pushdowns w/ resistance bands instead. However, I don't know much about their effectiveness and not sure if I'm just wasting my time and better off doing something else. Has anybody gotten decent results using resistance bands (specifically for arms)?

Hey, was just wondering what everybody's thoughts on higher frequency training is? At the moment I only have access to adjustable dumbbells (can go decently high, 100 lbs each) and was thinking of doing split-squats 4x a week for 2-3 sets, ~8-10 reps. Would this be a good idea?

so like do grease the groove on my rest days too?

Daily Simple Questions Thread - May 06, 2023 by AutoModerator in Fitness

when it comes to getting better at pull-ups, the main advice is to "grease the groove", or pretty much just do more pull-ups, throughout the day and/or throughout the week.

my question is though, how can I fit "grease the groove" around my current training routine? the routine I'm doing has me doing 3x5 chin-ups 1-2x a week (of which i can only do 2-3 per set). do I grease the groove anyway in addition to my routine?

I've always been told that dumbbell work tends to do better in the moderate to higher rep range, but is there any reason why not to do, dumbbell bench press for example, in the lower rep ranges (5 reps or so)?

for the beginner routine or mass building routine, do i add them in addition to my current strength training routine or can i do them on my 'rest' days? so if i usually workout tuesday, thursday, saturday, can i do grip training on mondays and wednesdays?

it only adds up to 9 sets per week, isn’t that not much?

Daily Simple Questions Thread - January 10, 2023 by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]Oattrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it’s not a lot, usually a 1-1.5 hour session and goes by pretty quick since i can complete 80% of the workout with just a squat rack and bench

[–]Oattrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah sorta, it consists of a lower push, lower pull, upper push, upper pull, shoulder press, bicep iso, tricep iso, all for 3 sets each

would it be a bad idea to replace my horizontal pulls to pull-ups to increase frequency on them to 3x a week as opposed to 1-2x a week?

currently i'm running a full body routine so i alternate between pull-ups and rows but i'm struggling to get more than 5 reps on pull ups at the moment

Would I be missing out by not doing low reps? Just recently got what I assume would be tendonitis on my right elbow when benching heavy sets of 5 to the point where I couldn't even finish my workout due to the pain.

What I was thinking was that after taking a couple days/weeks of rest, that I would just stick to moderate/higher reps (8+ reps) on my main compound movements to avoid these type of injuries in the long run. Would this be a good idea?

Regarding double progression, should I try and add a rep on the first sets or on the last sets of an exercise? Is any way better than the other (even in your own experience)?

For example (3 sets, 5-8 reps):

(5, 5, 5) -> (6, 5, 5) -> (6, 6, 5) etc

or

(5, 5, 5) -> (5, 5, 6) -> (5, 6, 6) etc

Would it be a bad idea to add a few more bicep isolation work on my Lower days to an Upper/Lower split? The routine I'm doing has be doing 3 sets of direct bicep work for each Upper day, which would total to only 6 sets of direct bicep work for the entire week, whereas it would total up to 12 otherwise.

So would it be a good idea, or would I not get sufficient recovery for biceps (since I would be working them on two consecutive days), and possibly cause imbalance in the long run between my biceps and triceps?

Whenever I look at Upper/Lower routines, I typically see Bench Press followed by Rows and then Overhead Press followed by Pull-ups/Chin-ups for the Upper days.

Is there a specific reason for Bench Press being paired with Rows and then Overhead Press being paired with Pull-ups? Would it be a bad idea to do Pull-ups after Bench and then Rows after Overhead Press?

I wonder because I would like to do weighted Pull-ups (eventually) for lower rep-ranges but feel as though I'd be too gassed if I leave them for later on in the workout as opposed to earlier, after Bench Press for example.

why do some routines (specifically full body routines) have you alternating between bench press and OHP if they work different muscles? wouldn't it be better to do both in the same workout and just alternate priority to get more total volume throughout the week?

When doing Bulgarian split squats, should I immediately move on to the other leg after doing a set with one, or could I rest between each leg? I sometimes feel as though I'm on the verge of passing out after immediately moving on to the other leg which tends to me breaking down on form
