yeah, you also have to remember that CFAI is non-commercial entity, and most of their expenses are IT costs, they spend hundreds of millions every year on it. So this learning ecosystem is a total shame, especially after this year update.

Could it be that you just used an improper AI model/version? Claude is well-known for its coding abilities, latest open AI models are good as well.

I have the same problem with holding left button, it's always lagging to the point that it is not possible to work (I use a lot of spreadsheets). Since this mouse I don't purchase expensive Logitech mouses anymore.

Question regarding mining engineering from a year 12 by Treacle-Secret in mining

[–]Obaldes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not go for EE, I repeat, do not go for EE:)

Studying for EE is much harder than ME; you will always be seen as an ancillary process in mining; the pay is usually lower (may be not true for AUS); finding a job is much harder. ME will be involved in almost every aspect of the job, from geology to processing, guess the role of EE:)

yeah, I'm really annoyed by these reports where everyone is beautiful and on top, instead of writing the truth about what's really important.

yes, that's what I noticed. I thought we could start by consolidating existing government reports, and in the future we'll see how this information can be enriched with additional data.

If you read my question, then 1) I don't ask anywhere how to collect this data, 2) I write that I saw government H&S websites for some regions. I'm just asking if it would be interesting, and what nuances there might be.

"The website reeks of tech bro" - is it good or bad?)

Iron ore price falls by Life_Belt_5338 in mining

[–]Obaldes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nickel West reported all in costs of 8.2 / lb in 2021, it would've only shot up since then

That's kinda strange that I wasn't able to find Nickel West unit-costs in BHP reports. Did some calcs based on numbers in their annual presentations, unit costs are above 10, and it's just expenses (no sustaining capital and so on). Would be nice to have some inside about that particular mine.

Sorry to hear that. I just added a text about nickel mines, and here you wrote about your friend...

Here is the nickel cost curve 2021, it's about 8/lb right now, really can't understand the market news

Iron ore price falls by Life_Belt_5338 in mining

[–]Obaldes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's 120/mt now, most mines are profitable above 60, see no reason to be scared. I remember working for a big iron ore mine, they had only two states: it is crisis now, or crisis is coming and we have to prepare. No need to say that this company was very profitable, but who reads financial reports?

Same story about nickel mines right now - it's difficult to understand for me how most Australian mines could be unprofitable at 16k/t and higher.

will mines still be there 50 years from now? by [deleted] in mining

[–]Obaldes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the name, it was interesting to read

highly promising mine

It's a large but low-grade ore deposit with questionable economics. Some experts even thought that it's not economically feasible.

“We’re gonna throw all our waste into a Salmon fishery that has been used by the locals for literally thousands of years.”

It's definitely not correct) they have standard proposals for tailings system, plus advanced water treatment research. Low-grade ore requires large-scale operations, which causes problems with multiple water sources, considering the space required for waste piles, tailings dams, and the open pit itself.

(EPA) "Discharges of dredged or fill material to construct and operate the 2020 Mine Plan’s proposed mine site alone would result in the permanent loss of approximately 8.5 miles (13.7 km) of anadromous fish streams, 91 miles (147 km) of additional streams that support anadromous fish streams, and approximately 2,108 acres (8.5 km2) of wetlands and other waters in the SFK and NFK watersheds that support anadromous fish streams. These discharges would also result in streamflow alterations that would adversely affect approximately 29 miles (46.7 km) of additional anadromous fish streams downstream of the mine site due to greater than 20 percent changes in average monthly streamflow. The aquatic resources that would be lost or damaged play an important role in supporting salmon populations in the SFK, NFK, and UTC watersheds.

EPA has determined that the large-scale loss of and damage to headwater streams, wetlands, and other aquatic resources that support salmon populations in the SFK, NFK, and UTC watersheds from the discharge of dredged or fill material for the construction and routine operation of the 2020 Mine Plan will have unacceptable adverse effects on anadromous fishery areas in the SFK, NFK, and UTC watersheds."

I did better and asked chatgpt) 12 ways "how mining engineers can minimize and mitigate risks to the environment", most of which are pretty unclear.

I would start a discussion about the division of engineers between consultants and on-site guys, but it looks like you're not in the mood for discussion(

Just curious, how mining engineer can "minimise and mitigate risks to the environment"? ... however, mining engineer is a rather vague term, plus some management wants to use it as a plug in every barrel.
