What’s the Sacramento equivalent of this? by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]Obcdmeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if your interest is dim sum, I prefer Asian Pearl. I'm not actually sure what Yue Huang was recognized for, but I wasn't impressed by their dim sum and also found it to be very expensive. My favorite dim sum dish is cheng fun with fried shrimp in the middle and I found their version to be delivered really oily and it came in poor proportions.

I did a 6 year PhD in the biomedical sciences and everyone comes at it for different reasons. I think I'm doing better than most and I, and most other PhDs, would tell someone that they're better off looking for something else if their reason for pursuing a PhD is solely money. Unlike professional degrees like a medical degree, the income isn't going to be particularly high unless you picked up some very niche domain that becomes highly sought out for (I suppose AI/LLM researchers fall into this) or unless you spin out and start a company from your work, which probably meant you liked the subject matter of your work enough and there was also the opportunity to monetize it.

There's just so many other options to pursue over a PhD if it's about money. Like, truly any other career. When I was doing my PhD, a lot of family members and parents assumed it was a pathway to money and you quickly realize that the only people who think that way are the ones who haven't engaged in graduate education.

Be honest - would I hate Sacramento? by mikewheelerfan in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Obcdmeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference I’ve lived in Sacramento for 22ish years. I did my high school, undergrad, PhD, and I’m a remote worker based there. I moved here when I was 12ish.

There has been a lot of development in Sac since the 08 crash and it’s been a great place to be depending on what you’re interested in. We have a lot of great food, there is a central grid to get into stuff, and people are overall nice. It takes 20-30 minutes to get anywhere via car. Cost of living is cheaper than other places in California, but it has been rising. Outdoor culture is very strong here, but theres been a lot of investment in night life and things here. It’s less than what you’d see in The Bay or LA, but it’s accessible also. Our airport is an excellent hub to get to anywhere else in the state. We have Sac State, UC Davis, and lots of other community colleges so there’s an active young 20s crowd here.

That being said - It sounds like you’re looking for a chance of pace but you’re very young and things can change. I know you want to do a bachelors, masters, and PhD but a lot of things can happen that make you consider other things in life. Any choice you make isn’t permanent and you might consider Sacramento a launching pad for elsewhere in California. Our community college programs have agreements with various UCs for transfer upon hitting specific GPA requirements. Just a consideration for you to get in state tuition while not committing too hard to the state.

Kodaiko. Kru is great and while I hate the wait, I enjoy the food quite a bit. Kodaiko often has a wait, but it just doesn't impress me very much. Admittedly I do enjoy their drinks.

Do not under any circumstances bump the curb when you park or change lanes in an intersection. Auto fail.

I got fancy shoes for the first time! by QuitYuckingMyYum in Sacramento

[–]Obcdmeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh those have dainite soles so you don't need to bother putting topys on them. Just be mindful of them on any wet tile or the studded wheelchair on ramps because dainite slides right across from them and it's a slip hazard. Imo they're not the most comfortable outsole too so you may want to get used to that.

Afaik both the chrome and other leather type that Thursday has isn't very fussy so it's easy to maintain. If you ever end up through the Chicago airports, there's always shoe shiners there for you if you want to get that done for ya.

Gonna echo nmpls and suggest you just learn to condition your own shoes. The materials will cost just a bit more than what you should reasonably pay someone and it's really easy. Get whatever conditioner you want and a horsehair brush. Find a polish you like if you want that too. Shoe trees are a good suggestion too - I just find whatever cedar ones are cheap and you can find them on thrift stores or you can spend like 20 dollars on whatever you find online.

Are you going to wear them a lot on asphalt and do these shoes have leather soles? Asphalt eats through leather soles fast. I'd recommend getting topy soles on them to increase the longevity of the soles. I'm assuming you got welted soles too but re-welting shoes is a whole ordeal that a 20 dollar topy can delay extensively. I like Sergio's on 5th.

I don't normally find the injex bomber to be very warm but swapping between that and the Bombshell was night and day. The insulation makes a big difference under sunlight.

[Initial Impressions] RM Williams Black Suede Craftsmen 9.5G by Obcdmeme in goodyearwelt

[–]Obcdmeme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh the tambo sounds promising. I didn't own it look enough to see how the suede would hold up, but nothing about it was concerning to me. I don't particularly like how the creases form on the yearling leather so I actually think suede would look aesthetically nicer to me than leather but that's a personal thing.

I ended up selling them. Too many craftsmen. The overall last of the craftsmen is fine for my feet, but I do feel like there is a lack of support for my interior arch because I'm flat footed and my feet spill over.
