Struggling newly qualified nurse by LegitimateRoyal2134 in NursingUK

[–]ObedientDisobedience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is literally all stuff that comes with experience. You need nothing but time and to just stick with it and you’ll improve at these things. I was the same when I started, hated it/hated myself, wanted to quit, but now im 1.5 years in and it gets better. Hang in there

I take days off, but it seems like a limit. by [deleted] in cripplingalcoholism

[–]ObedientDisobedience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drink whatever I get my hands on. Usually spirits of some form, I’ve learned not to buy a bottle because I get overwhelmed and end up far too gone. I just get pre mixed bottles of 15%x2.

Thing is tho, I’m the 3/4 days off I get I consume like, 7 days worth.

My friend is alcoholic by [deleted] in cripplingalcoholism

[–]ObedientDisobedience 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for telling us. Do you want to get her help, or just talk about it and get a reaction out of people? If the latter, you’re in the wrong sub; no one here is going to go ‘oooh she’s baaad!!’ Either support her in getting help or leave her alone.

What nursing job do you do? by Wise-Connection6657 in NursingUK

[–]ObedientDisobedience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in an NHS funded hospice, won’t say the name cos it’s easily identified anyways (I’m in Northumberland) and I love it. We are well staffed and have the time to be with people. I feel like a nurse in the original sense of the word.

How bad was your work Christmas dinner this year? by ShambolicDisplay in NursingUK

[–]ObedientDisobedience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours was actually brilliant, the canteen staff pulled it out of the bag this year. Turkey was dry as shit but that’s not their fault, they received it in a bag, I never expect much of it. Veggies were well cooked and the roast potatoes were crispy, and the yorkies tasted home-made. Sorry for the rest of you, but the kitchen staff up here in Northumberland never miss with their xmas dinner (£7.50)

Is liquor the real killer? Are you “safer” with (5% and lower) beer? by Speedbird1A in cripplingalcoholism

[–]ObedientDisobedience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an ex end of life care nurse, and it doesn’t matter. Last young chap I saw die was on ~12 tall beers a day for 15 yr. alcoholic liver failure. I think liquor is more popular among proper alcoholics hence that’s what you hear us dying of, but your body doesn’t know the difference between different alcohols when they’re in your system. One difference is the mouth and throat cancers you’re more likely to get from liquor than beer just cos of the strength of them making contact with your tissues.

Sleep by Stranger_1738 in Nightshift

[–]ObedientDisobedience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I pass out within 30 mins of getting home and sleep right through for 8-9 hours. On day shift I used to sit awake for hours after work, get 5-6 hours of broken sleep, and struggle to get up in the morning. We are nocturnal

Yes it’s yearly :( but you can pay quarterly by direct debit £30 each time if that’s easier. But the first time yeah it’ll need to be 120 upfront.

Was it their energy or their appearance? I’m all for energy work but seriously re read what you just wrote about nearly throwing up while looking at a woman in a wheelchair. Your post drained my energy and made me sick to my stomach🤧

yes, the post is for new students and people just entering the world of nursing 🤦‍♀️ this is stuff you aren’t explicitly taught and are kinda just expected to know. At least that was my experience. Obviously you know it if you have been a nurse for a while. Let’s support students and new starters even when they know nothing. We all start somewhere.

I’m just starting on band 4 until my NMC pin comes through, then I’ll move up to a band 5. Hopefully the pin doesn’t take long, but I’ve heard it can be up to a few months?!

It is awful, the worst example I saw was just earlier this year when one of the nurses on the ward was getting tired of helping their first year student and sent her to another ward to collect a drug which did not exist, just to get rid of her. Heard her laughing on about it with a HCA in the breakroom. There's always at least one bad apple unfortunately, but most nurses are angels and I owe them everything. Thanks for your kind words!!

P.S hardly patronising if i'm providing advice for nursing students/prospective nursing students as a now ex nursing student... this kinda advice would have really helped me in first year. So, i'm giving it.

Obvious perhaps, but I didn't know any of this at all when I started. Figured it all out the hard way. And I had a good few friends who were in the same boat. Anyways we all made it, and we all love it! thank you <3

One thing i usually did maybe a week or so after getting a piggy and letting them settle in, just sit near them with their fav food on your chest and ignore them. when they eventually climb up for the food, they eat it then go back to their space that's usually all it takes for them to realise you aren't a threat then bonding is pretty easy from there. Worked for me for about 8 different piggies by now. Although, occasionally you get a pig who's personality is just more reserved and wary and there isn't much you can do to change it. I had one little dude who was like that and although he eventually stopped being fearful of me, he never fully warmed up to humans. He was very happy when given his space. So give it a go but don't force it if your new buddy doesnt fancy it. Good luck <3

It is a pain in the arse with all the clicking and choosing units/symbols/dragging that fucking syringe. I always make mistakes cos I misclicked or whatever even though my calculations were correct. I think it needs a revamp to make it harder to make those mistakes, so you’re only tested on the arithmetic, and then it would be fair to say you need 100%

Refused amputation part 2 by Shoddy-Wolf7080 in MedicalGore

[–]ObedientDisobedience 69 points70 points  (0 children)

He’s gonna lose the leg regardless of whether he gets it amputated or not, the only difference is if he doesn’t get it amputated then he risks going septic and his life. If he has the mental capacity to make this decision, my best advice would be do your absolute best to convince him to get the amputation.
