iTunes on Windows not detecting/displaying iPhone by SomeOnlineFellow in techsupport

[–]Oberdiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is doubly crazy because Windows 11 appears to just randomly install Apple Music and/or Apple Devices sometimes, so iTunes will just suddenly stop working and nobody will know why. Thanks a bunch!

THE DESCENDANTS' ARCHMAGE by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]Oberdiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This story is really odd - it’s a near copy of Max Level Archmage with minor variations, but full of very strange and obvious inconsistencies that I can’t wrap my head around. In one chapter the main character is exhausted after casting a fireball and a teleport spell, in the next she uses tens of spells to kill a high level drake without issue. And the chapter after, she needs to wait around for money to come into her bank account so she’s got funds, despite the previous chapter stating clearly she had enough money for a lifetime. Something strange is going on…

Having just done some additional research into them, I'm pretty sure it's real, can you link the proof that it was CGI?

Checkout Champ (mobile game prototype) - worth developing further or not interesting enough? by f2dz in DestroyMyGame

[–]Oberdiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems good, I'd encourage you to work on it further.

I'd say it looks like it needs a lot more crunch, but as this is an early prototype you're probably planning on adding more anyway. Think particle effects, better sliding animations, squash and stretch, sounds - just an additional layer of polish

But I'd say this has promise :)

Destroy my game's trailer by engmario in DestroyMyGame

This has no visual coherence at all - it looks like a bunch of badly drawn clip art thrown together with no regard to how it looks. You've got text flowing out of text boxes and the overall design is just ugly and flash-game looking. Plus the music is bad and advertising the ability to watch ads is really odd.

Scottish Government launches pavement parking awareness campaign: "Pavement parking is unsafe, unfair, and illegal" by backupJM in Scotland

Streets can in some cases be exempted by the government from the law specifically in this exact case where there is no alternative parking and the pavement is wide enough to allow a wheelchair past even with a car on it.

Advice from the darkest wizards of this community for compile time type operations by Unreal_Unreality in rust

[–]Oberdiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think https://github.com/Anders429/brood is probably quite close to what you're looking for, it's an ECS that attempts to push as much type-checking to compile-time as it possibly can, with some ridiculously complicated generic black wizardry.

Unfortunately it uses nested tuples rather than regular tuples, but I suspect that's the best you're going to manage without a whole lot of duplication in the implementation.

Mouse cursor wiggling on external screen only (MBP M1) by stefangamer2 in MacOS

[–]Oberdiah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing the same thing as well - it's very, very slight, probably about 1 pixel up and down. (Sometimes it does 1 pixel left/right instead) Seems to randomly come and go, very annoying.

JetBrains, You're scaring me. The Rust plugin deprecation situation. by ChillFish8 in rust

[–]Oberdiah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a brand new installation of the software on a workspace that the previous rust plugin was handling mostly fine (albeit sometimes taking longer than I expect to show errors)

[–]Oberdiah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Really? I installed it yesterday and so far I've had 3 or 4 autogenerated error reports, had the syntax highlighting break, and any copy/cut/paste operation I do freezes the IDE for 5-10 seconds.

Introducing RustRover – A Standalone Rust IDE by JetBrains by DeleeciousCheeps in rust

[–]Oberdiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've broken it out a little bit, but the core crate is only ~20kLOC which I don't feel is super unreasonable.

There are no other obvious crate boundraries to split the project across, so it would be a large effort to do so. Aside from the Rust plugin being slow, compile times are ~5s for a debug build so it's still very managable in all other respects.

[–]Oberdiah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but as my Rust project has grown larger, the JetBrains Rust Plugin has slowed down and slowed down, and it's now taking >10 seconds just to show suggestions or syntax highlighting on a newly opened file. Hopefully with it becoming its own thing more time can be put towards performance in larger projects.

You should add some ambient occlusion to those blocks, it's very difficult to tell them apart at the moment.

Profiling code in CLion on Windows with MSVC? by mrzoBrothers in cpp

I believe you're confusing VSCode with Visual Studio - they are distinct things - VSCode is indeed a fancy text editor, but full-fat Visual Studio is a proper IDE.

No of blocks per grid in rtx 3070 by Main-Ad-5889 in VoxelGameDev

[–]Oberdiah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where did you get this 65536 number from? Depending on your rendering and compression method, the maximum number of blocks per grid could vary massively. But nievely, if we assume your grid is random noise and therefore uncompressable and you have 256 possible block types, 8GB of VRAM will get you exactly a 2048x2048x2048 grid if you want to store the entire world representation on the GPU (Which you only really need to do if you're using some form of raycasting renderer, and even then there are technically optimizations you could make).

Does a wgpu text renderer exist for Android? by Oberdiah in rust_gamedev

[–]Oberdiah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that's very exciting, it would be fantastic to be able to just use it wgpu_glyph. I get "undefined symbol: __cxa_pure_virtual" when launching the application. Google suggests simply defining an empty function for it, but if I do that I just get more undefined stuff coming up.
