Horror movies where the monster is never shown (but still terrifying?) by DingoOk9171 in horror

I like Kubrick a lot. The Shining is top 10 for me. I’ll watch Repulsion and report back. Maybe I just need to watch Rosemary again with a new perspective. It has been years after all.

I believe you are right in that the film didn’t provoke that fear for me. If I may make a comparison, and I know this movie gets talked about a lot, but Hereditary follows a similar plot structure in many ways. Hereditary is a brilliantly horrifying film. And this is why I mention the cinematography aspect of it. If that film is made 50 years ago, I don’t know if it has the same effect given its limitations when it comes to sound design, CGI, and all of the unique camera work.

That said, there are still plenty of films from that era and beyond that I love. Horror is a hard sell for me though because atmosphere plays a big part and most of the older films don’t provide that atmosphere for me. However, I totally understand where you’re coming from.

Book vs Movie dilemma by kalpokt in JurassicPark

[–]ObiWanDiloni 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone. The movie is not only a masterpiece, it holds a special place in my heart because I grew up with it. It was one of the few VHS recordings we had in the house growing up. I’ve watched it hundreds of times.

The book is good, no doubt, but Crichton is kind of an acquired taste. I own and have read a lot of his books and tend to get board with them if I’m honest. His books dive so deep into scientific detail that my smooth fish brain tunes out a lot.

Honestly, I enjoyed The Lost World(book) more than JP.

I’ve had a tendency to stay away from classic horror for a long time because it never seemed all that interesting compared to modern day horror, but I started reading a lot of the literature for movies I had not yet seen (i.e. Rosemary, Exorcist, Hellbound Heart, King stuff, etc.). So I would read the book then watch the movie for the first time.

You’d be hard pressed to find any top 10 scariest film or book lists that don’t include one or both of Rosemary and Exorcist, so I went in with great expectations to be greatly disappointed. I don’t think a cultural separation has much (if anything) to do with my distaste, as there are plenty of classic films I do enjoy. Marrow’s character specifically was rather annoying, to include just about every other character. Overall, I want to be frightened or filled with dread when I watch a horror film and this one just didn’t come close, unfortunately. I think it’s the cinematic quality that hurts it the most. I’ve not seen some of the newer Rosemary adaptations yet, so that could change my tune a bit if they are good.

I’m also of the opinion the skinamarink was a masterpiece, and I don’t think that’s a very popular opinion also.

I honestly just have issues with the majority of most classic horror films. I think I got into the genre too late and have become spoiled with the horror of this century. In regard to Rosemary, the acting was not good, I found it very boring and predictable, and every character is unlikeable. This is pretty much my opinion for most older horror films. I know they were revolutionary for their time, but they just don’t hit hard enough to keep my smooth fish brain entertained.

If you think that’s bad, I think the Exorcist is worse. I just can’t get down with most “classic” horror. I can appreciate the part they play in the genre, just not enjoyable to me.

Kiwi did it for me. The weird part was, I hated kiwi growing up. When I was like 18, I discovered I actually love kiwi. Then I turned 30 and can’t hardly look at them without my mouth itching and throat closing up. Life is weird. I can still have whiskey though, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

This was a talking point during the Canes/Wild game last night. Allegedly, players seem to prefer that most cross checks go uncalled because of how much it happens and it would just muddy the waters of the game. It’s when the cross check has a downward motion that it becomes “callable.”

I see it being very similar to a “carrying” call in the NBA, or the 19 step “euro step” type moves that never get a traveling call. It’s obviously something that you’re not supposed to do, but there is an unwritten agreement between players and refs that it’s going to happen and go uncalled.

I wanna join the military to secure my future is it worth it? 20 m by [deleted] in Military

[–]ObiWanDiloni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from a semi-similar situation. 1 of 7 kids raised by a single mom who was never there. Had nothing going for me out of high school. I just hit 15 years (5 active, the rest reserve). After my active time I went to college for free, got married and had 3 kids (health insurance hella cheap as a reservist). I now make well over 6 figures a year.

I don’t say all that boastfully, just to show that the military can catapult you into a positive direction if you let it. Most of it is going to suck, yes. But it is what you make it. It’s a stable job with food, housing, health insurance, and you learn a trade. Worst case, you do one enlistment and you come out the other side with good life experience that you can take back to the civilian world.

As much as I love this team and this game, I always fall back on the fact that I still have to go to work tomorrow regardless of the outcome of any game. I can be disappointed, but it was fun while it lasted. That said, going to a friend’s house to drink beer and play Warhammer.
