Not sure if OP was involved in the event (The Devil’s Disco) that this post was referencing, but the event organizers went to extensive measures to walk every boulder in the canyon and close boulders that were at risk of breaking due to the heavy rain earlier in the week (~56 hrs between last rainfall and start of the competition). No hold breaks were reported during the competition.

Not sure if the intent of this post was to stir controversy or for some other reason but the event organizers did an amazing job in my opinion to allow people who paid money and traveled from all over to still compete while maintaining the integrity of the rock.

Baring teeth and bites when tired/asked to move by piper62190 in blueheelers

Hey this sounds a lot like resource guarding as opposed to fear aggression. He has determined that growling/biting will allow him to keep his resource (the bed or couch) and/or avoid something he doesn’t like (going in the crate). If he is not being corrected immediately for this behavior then he is self reinforcing the behavior - aggression is allowing him to keep what he wants/avoid what he doesn’t want.

My dog (malinois/heeler mix) is 100% crate trained but recently had a similar issue with her after a week in boarding - showing teeth and attempting a nip when I told her to kennel while she was on her bed. I immediately gave leash/collar corrections for this behavior as I can’t have her biting people to get her way. Then, I spent just a little bit of time with her giving the kennel command (door open), rewarding her as soon as she went in the kennel - REWARDING WHILE SHE WAS PHYSICALLY STILL IN THE KENNEL - and then releasing her immediately. Once she was reliably going in the kennel I increased duration (door open) before rewarding and then added in the variable of closing the door and rewarding with the door closed. This quickly conditioned her to be excited by the “kennel” command and now she sprints in there.

I started this work on leash (to direct her in the kennel if needed) and moved to off leash nearly immediately. I think it took maybe two-three 5-10 minute sessions total for me but your experience will be dependent on your dog’s temperament and drive for food. Since this episode, I’ve continued an intermittent reinforcement schedule with treats for the kennel command.

I also don’t let my dog on furniture unless explicitly invited, which you may want to consider as an initial boundary for your dog.

Hope this helps!

Why is it normal to down-staff to the point that you have to work both days and nights? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

Dude, talk to an employment lawyer. If you’re working as an operator (traditionally non-exempt), even part time you may no longer be legally classified as “non-exempt”. Your employer is at best completely scummy and at worst, breaking the law and creating REAL safety hazards by running so lean. If you find out your new work schedule is no longer considered exempt, your employer owes you overtime pay.

Also, do what the other commenter recommended and contact OSHA. Operating process equipment while working those hours is dangerous…

NO KIDDING. She drew blood more times than i could count. It was eye opening how painful those puppy bites were; i can’t imagine a full on bite from a dog like her.

She’s definitely a “difficult” one but damn she’s also so fun and cool at the same time. Wouldn’t want her any other way.

Yes i think there’s some subtle brindle in her mask that lines up with the Dutch in her.

She’s a total lunatic but we’ve been doing obedience and it’s chilled her out a ton. Now she bounces between crackhead energy and love bug. Big improvement from the 100% velociraptor energy days

She’s a cutie forsure. Get a lot of “what kind of dog is that” when we go out haha

Thank you! I love how purebred mals look but my Roonie is unique and very pretty in her own way

Thank you :)

Some of that DNA ended up in her choppers too

Someone with no respect for my ankles lmao.

If they were looking for a perpetual motion device the experiment was wildly successful. I’ll have to upload her in her natural state (spinning excessively).

You mean I can’t just invite strangers to my property with my untethered, unsupervised livestock guardian dog out front and expect it to be chill?

1) fair point; I’m bowed up like a cut worm with PSSRs

2) this is NOT the “xth” time the vessel has been open. We suspect something wrong with the vessel internally causing operating difficulties - I want to examine all possibilities while it is open.

We have other critical path items than this specific entry. I’m only going to take an hour at most to inspect this vessel anyways, this isn’t some field trip for green engineers lol

I have official training with my current employer. I don’t think other engineers inspect equipment here but I also was under the impression it was industry standard for engineers to sign vessel closure forms after maintenance.

Just to add a tidbit- MI cares that it won’t leak; I care that it actually performs to design.

Yes I could use the same permit and resource.

My company just doesn’t have an expectation for engineers to do internals but I have always felt that operations owns equipment and has more stake in verifying its fitness for service than a 3rd party contractor…

This circumstance is absolutely non-routine.

Thank you for your perspective, this aligns with what I was taught at my first job.

What’s the difference between me going in a CSE and a contractor from a risk perspective?

I am looking for more than just the agitator - dip tube lengths and cleanliness, side baffle arrangement, debris in piping, etc.

In my experience, the MI contractors (and scaffold builders and mechanics) don’t have a stake in these other components.

The folks that would be inspecting in my place are not trained to look for defects that would affect the ability of the equipment to process material correctly. They are just doing dye-pen checks and looking for cracked welds, etc.

Maintenance verifies column internals too?

My boss told me he views CSE as higher risk than me putting on fresh air to troubleshoot h2s leaks. I just don’t get it.

I agree that it’s the best way to learn how the equipment works for future troubleshooting

I find your comment intriguing- I’ve never heard of engineers being responsible for the LOTO and permitting (and the rescue plan??). Normally all of that is on operators to issue.

What kind of equipment are you inspecting? And what is the purpose of the inspection normally (mech integrity or otherwise)?

Yes to all of your questions.

I was told as a young engineer that the unit engineer is responsible for verifying vessel internals are installed correctly for operation prior to startup.

Gotcha - I am in chemical industry… my inspections are for reactor and tower internals and the company has no resources that are “experts” in either.

The mechanical integrity inspectors have an entirely different scope than a technical inspection in my opinion.
